I’m using Photoshop CS4 Extended on pc - is there some way I could get my files open in those floating windows by default? I really, really would like have my images in windows every time when I open them, but those tabs just keep coming…:argh:
I’ve already unchecked “open in tabs” from preferences, but still it behaves somewhat randomly, opening sometimes in windows, sometimes in tabs.
hm… didn’t help. It actually seems that when I drag & drop files to Photoshop, they open in tabs (what an annoyance!), but when opening with open -dialog, they open in windows. grrr.
That is because the guys from Adobe like subtlety.
Drag and drop your files on property bar or on any panel, it will work opening them in windows. If you drag and drop your images on “empty” area, it will just open in tab 
^ didn’t cross my mind to drag files on toolbars, but that actually works! Weird feature, but saved my day, so thanks!
