Looking?? I would move in with you, pull up a chair and stare over your shoulder if I could :buttrock: popcorn - anyone?
Open Figure Drawing Workshop - Sorolla, Zorn, Leon Master Copy - with Rebeccak 017
Dan, your detailing makes me green of envy. And to be mentioned in the same sentance as you is an honour
Wow, SaraD, I don’t think anyone has said that to me before. Thank you very much (as well as for your comment on the artwork!
Here is the progress so far:

The clothing is turning out to be the most difficult for me and the errors in my sketch are really showing up as I paint in the details
. I have also noticed that the rifle is not as crisp as the rest of the painting and so I will have to work on that when I am all done.
LM,
LOL, no one here jealously guards secrets, I don't think. :) So many posts, it's hard to keep up with them! :)
Thanks Enrique, for providing your brush settings and brushes.
Dan Silverman,
Thanks for that! It's always interesting to hear peoples' backgrounds. :)
Regarding transitioning from Master Copies to your own work ~ good question. ;) The thing that needs to be understood is that this is only one Workshop, doing one copy ~ a good art school will require you to do dozens of such studies in order to internalize what you at first copy, and then come to absorb through repetition, hard work, and practice. Not to mention years of life drawing, illustration and perspective classes, color classes, etc. Too often beginning artists (not yourself) think that they should be able to draw from imagination immediately ~ they hear out of context the art school phrase 'you should be able to draw from imagination', not realizing that it can take years of life drawing, master copies, and anatomical studies to be able to do this ~ and that's just for people! Not to mention buildings, environments, etc. Workshops such as these are meant to provide what in some schools is lacking ~ practice based on the figure and on Master Copies. However, I make no pretense about this Forum being a substitute for an art school. Having said that, the goal here is to provide as much free, useful information to artists as is possible.
Also, there are simply no shortcuts to improving in one’s art ~ it takes a lot of time and practice, and these Workshops are meant to provide a vehicle (though should certainly not be the only vehicle) to practice one’s digital and traditional art.
In a nutshell: the OFDWs at the moment are not about concept, and they are specifically meant NOT to be about concept in an effort to allow artists to develop their skills. Too often I see artists go after something 'original' in concept without any foundation in terms of drawing or painting. You'll see a lot of that in the WIP 2D Forums, where artists often attempt elaborate compositions with no foundation whatsoever. Those artists, at least in my opinion, should be practicing fundamentals first, and original compositions second.
Having said that, I have given some thought to Workshops which are more concept~oriented. My training is as an illustrator, and the way my program was set up was such that the first half of my training was devoted to foundational skills based training, and the second half devoted to more 'concept' type classes where the focus was more on developing one's ideas for illustrations.
In a way, I'm wary of running such an Illustration focused Workshop because I don't want beginning artists who should be focusing on skills first to fall into the trap of skipping over the fundamentals. But I will give some thought to this (bearing in mind that I am one person, and would appreciate any volunteers in this regard to help run this type of Workshop).
Ideas and suggestions regarding this or really anything related to ways to improve the Anatomy Forum are most welcome. :) In fact, there is a thread here dedicated to that purpose:

This is looking much better! Keep pushing this, I think this is one of your strongest pieces yet in your Portfolio!

Hi Rebecca and Everyone
Started my Sorolla Beach this morning. Searching for colors. Fine tune it as I go along.
Some Great Paintings on here so far.
Can’t wait to see what they look like a month from now!
Great job everyone!
Take Care
Glenn
Here´s my first wip. I couldn´t resist the colors in this one
But, I´m planning to do the Hong Ly´s models as well - they are always so much fun to paint.

SaraD and Glenn,
Great to see you both aboard!
Dan Silverman,
That’s looking amazing! It’s great how fast you are painting, and equally surprising this is one of your first digital paintings. Great work! ![]()
Cheers,

Question: Is the intention here for us to copy the original as exactly as possible, or to draw our interpretation of the original?
(Regarding my own progress, I’ve made a line drawing of #1 and will post once I get a sketch done).
Mikeface,
You are free to interpret ~ I doubt you’ll see any two copies alike at the end of this Workshop.
Just use your best judgement as to what an interpretation is ~ stylistic interpretation is fine, though I’d prefer not to see matchsticks arranged in a semicircle as an interpretation.
Cheers,
~Rebeccak

First of all, thank you for the compliment! It is very humbling.
Secondly, while I have only done about two digitial paintings (only with the guys at the Concept Art forums) for the purpose of critique and learning, I have been painting some skins for low-poly models. I don’t consider that really digital painting, but I have learned a few tricks in Photoshop as a result. But, frankly, I have never ever tackled a subject of this magnitude and it is very exciting for me to be able to do this. Thank you for the encouragement!
Here is (yet another) progress shot … almost almost there!:

Dan,
You’re quite welcome!
Nothing better in terms of challenge than a Master Copy. ![]()
Mecha,
Great to see your update!
Still miles to go on this obviously, but here it is:
MechaHateChimp,
Wow. Great face and I love the turban as well. I am looking forward to seeing this image when you get it completed!
Here is my final image:

Thanks Dan & Rebecca!
Rebecca: Nice start btw:thumbsup:
Hey, I have sort of a weird question regarding proportion. You ever get wobbly face? One of my biggest problems when doing any type of portrait work, my facial features tend to become slightly off balance… if Im working on paper, I usually flip the paper and look at it through the light which helps give me a better idea of where Im off. In PS, I can just flip the canvas but Im really trying to get to a point where I dont have to do that a million times. Have you ever come across that problem and if so, what tricks or excercises did you use to help you overcome it?
Glenn: I am happy because I totally knew you were going to pick that painting! Cant wait to see how you handle it.
Dan: I am totally jealous. You are so fast! You must make excellent use of your time. That image is looking sweet. Doh! You finished while I was posting. Congrats.
Enrique, thanks for the brushes. You are doing so great as usual.
Becca, nice values studies.!!
DanSilverman,
Fantastic work! The one minor crit I have is that the ear seems just a bit low. Not so much that it is really bothersome though. Phenomenal stuff!!~ Will you be attempting another painting?
One thing I encourage our participants to do when they finish their pieces is to create Step~by~Step Tutorials (if you worked on multiple layers, which many artists do not). If you have the time and would like to put together a Tutorial, I would encourage you to do so here in this Forum ~
Tutorials and Workshops

For example, Enrique was kind enough to do one here:
Tutorial - Digital Paint for OFDW Caravaggio Master Copy - by DigitalSol
I just ask that you keep the naming convention to Tutorial - What It’s About - by Your Name.
Even if you can’t work on another painting, I would encourage you to continue to post advice and comments here as you have time to!
Cheers,
~Rebeccak

Wow. Thanks for the comment and the critique. I did not notice the ear until you said something about it and now it looks a bit low to me, but that may only be because you have planted the thought in my mind
.
I am not sure if I will attempt another painting this time around as I need to get some work done, but I am very tempted to. I want to learn more. Despite how this image turned out I am really a beginner in this area and, frankly, I am pretty timid about doing another one.
If you have the time and would like to put together a Tutorial, I would encourage you to do so here in this Forum ~
Wow. I am very flattered that you would suggest this to me. I realize that this is open to all, but I am still flattered. I will certainly write one up and we shall see if it helps anyone. I saved incrementally as I worked so it would be very easy to reconstruct what I did. I also made a ton of mistakes and I think I can point out what I think I did wrong.
I would encourage you to continue to post advice and comments here as you have time to!
I would be more than happy to. Thank you.
DanSilverman,
That’s great! Thank you for doing the Tutorial.
There is no rush, feel free to do this as you’re able. There are, after all, 3 1/2 weeks left in the Workshop, so there is lots of time.
Looking forward to your Tut!
A pleasure to have you in the Workhsop.
Cheers,
~Rebeccak
Hey all!
Here are my intial sketches. I’m using the basic 2min-5min-10min format outlined in the beginner lounge. I had real tough time with the forshortening on the protrduding leg, but I think its like somewhat better in the final drawing. I think I’m just about ready to start painting now. So, feel free to C&C and paint-over before I get started. Thanks in advance!
