Hi all! It is my first post.
I have started to draw it a pencil and a mouse. I hope for your comments. Tomorrow I shall take in hands graphire.

#85

Hi DiM, looking good, I like the face, that seems is the most advanced part, the rest is well structured for my taste, drawing with a mouse, is very unconfortable and hard, and even that your result is pretty good, are you thinking in apply color later?, that would be great, will wait for your next post.

Hey everyone! Rebecca, I just know you knew I was lurking  I’m sorry I never completed OFDW16 – when I lost my progress on the Monk, I just went a general ā€˜blah’… oh well.

Everyone’s is looking amazing so far. I’m interested in everyone’s styles and how they are putting them into the paintings. I don’t really have any crits, as they all look good in their own way. I would also like to add that Maladie has impressed the crap outta me with her renditions. I think that loose style suits you amazingly. It’s why they have painters that do that – I don’t think I could do that loose style if I tried!!

So, I’ve been working on the Hong Ly… which after looking at it for an hour or so, is quite beautiful. This is just a crop of the most worked-out part:

100% zoom - I worked in 200-300%

I was having trouble blending, and finally just caved and used the regular ol’ PS airbrush. I really don’t know what else to do, since skin is like… umm, totally 100% new to me LOL. I did texture-ise the parts here with a couple custom brushes.

What I would like to know – from all of you – is:

What types of blender brushes do you use?

#90

OK! I have not had a lot of time to work on this today, but I do want to get this completed so that I can get back to work  . Here is where I am starting out today (just blocked in the basic colors for the clothing):

#91

Hey Laby, thanks so much for the positive feedback!! And that looseness is merely thanks to the AMAZING brushes you sent me (Ghoro’s)
You are doing great yourself! Good eye for colours, you’ll be alright.

Queenie: great work! It’s nice to see you get better and better:).

Digital Sol: wow, you’re a value goddes yourself;), I mean god.

Dan Silverman: going crazy on the hat, are we? Beautiful details there!

#92

Enrique,

Thanks for the close~up, no real crits so far, that’s looking great!

Dan Silverman,

Looks fantastic, do you mind telling us a bit about your artistic training / background?

Cheers,

#93

Becca: thank you very much

Maladie: hahaha, thanks but, yeah, male adjectives please.

#94

Bah! No one is answering me - perhaps you jealousy guard your secrets o.O

Seriously - what blender brushes do y’all use? For skin - that is.

I want to try out a bunch.

#95

going crazy on the hat, are we? Beautiful details there!

Yep! I love that hat … though I wouldn’t wear one myself … not in public  . Thanks for the compliment  !

Looks fantastic, do you mind telling us a bit about your artistic training / background?

Sure. I am a self-trained artist that mainly does real-time 3D models for things like games and training sims. I used to do a few book covers in the past, but nothing to extensive. I used to do quite a bit of sketching with pencils, but I have always been afraid of painting. I am horrible with colors. I learned to paint a bit digitally in order to create skins for my real-time 3D models, but I never did anything too extensive.

About seven years ago I started to hang out with some of the people at the old Concept Artist’s forum (a great forum that no longer exists) and I submitted a few pieces of my work to be critiqued. Frankly, what I turned in stank … really bad … . But the people there were very nice and, instead of cutting me down they critiqued me and helped me out. I improved as a result of their advice.

In any case, I have not done any series digital painting (or non-digital for that matter) at all. When I saw this challenge I thought I would ā€œbite the bulletā€ and give it a try and I determined to post no matter the results (good or bad). I am very happy with the over all results of this painting. But I am wondering about something … I feel I can do this because I am using the image as a reference … a reference for form and color. What I am concerned about is, one day, taking this to the next level and creating a unique piece of art and achieving the same level of quality and detail. In other words, how does one transition from ā€œlearning from the mastersā€ to creating one’s own art?

#96

Hey, sorry, I was about to do it time ago, but just forgott, this is the brush that I use almost if not all the time.

First I try to identify the most evident contrast and later rework the area with 10% opacity brushes using the colors taken with the color picker.

I use too the smudge to blend, not in every place just where is needed

hope this helps.

#97

Thanks Rebecca, for a nice welcome words and hints …

#98

All I can say is - WOW! Those workshops are a treat :bounce:

Dan, your detailing makes me green of envy. And to be mentioned in the same sentance as you is an honour  Thanks, Rebeccak!
DiM,
I can“t wait to see the progress of this one.
Queensoul - you master the colors, as usual.
Digi, can we expect another tut on this one?
Becca - how you turn these b/w into the colored, totally perfect in value, is a mystery to me :argh:

I“ve just started my piece, and will soon have some Wip“s to share.

C“ya
