#161

In a hurry here, here’s my update. I haven’t had a chance to look at the other paintings :-/

#162

hi Enrique… did a quickie search for tall ships, and cook’s ship… this site might be of interest, lots of close ups of an actuall wooden model, at fairly decent res: http://www.yachtsdownunder.com/hms_endeavour.htm

#163

Awesome thanks Zephyri, Im very thankful, did I say you thanks, already?

#164

ok, blocked in the background mostly here, little work on the face…

kris

#165

Looking good krispee, I just change a little bit the colors to other more saturated, and give it more deep shadows, thats all, good work overall

#166

Interesting discussions recently…Rebecca, I enjoyed your little thesis on the subject! Very well put. Personally I am one of those who discovered painting and computers at the same time, so my problem is rather the opposite: to train myself in traditional approaches after learning the photoshop tricks. it’s a challenge…

ah, hiiri - wow!
digitalsol - yours is really looking good, too. I have attached the brush I’m using for these sketches, Goro’s Structure3, to this post as a .zip file…enjoy!

Sooo, I tackled the toughie today. I’m not attempting those ruffles just yet though! An hour’s blocking and value:

I’m going to work on this, the original is too exquisite not to. Please give me some c&c about value, colour and composition/anatomy before I get too stuck in! (ps I know the hands are atrocious.)

cheers, (you’ve got me doing it now Rebecca…)

Audit:
Thank you so much, yours is looking good, good color scheme

This is my final image for Mr. Johannes Wtenbogaert, hope u like it, I will try another in Painter, thanks for the feedback on this.

audit,

Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you liked my little speech. :D ;) Hehe, I appreciate a good question, and it's definitely a good one to talk about...but I don't want this thread to turn into a debate thread, that's for a different forum. :)

Here is a little review of your piece so far, to be taken for what it's worth:

[left]I think the key to the composition is the monumentality of the pose ~ the A frame is sort of classic, and in Rembrandt's portrait, it is on full display. The A sort of suggests stability and power, I suppose, sort of like a mountain. I would really ratchet that up in your piece, and make the base of the 'A' wider.

EDIT: LOL about the ‘cheers’ thang  ~ once you start, you can’t stop!

Enrique,

Beautiful work ~ either tonight or tomorrow I’ll post some in depth comments. Without comparing it to the original, it looks great. A quick comment might be that I think the colors of the book might be a bit richer / more yellowish. But I haven’t yet compared yours to the original. One thing I notice is that the upper hand looks a little flat ~ you might try to enhance it’s shading to make it a bit more volumetric. I also think that the pages of the book in the original are really expressive ~ they seem almost to be alive, like wings or a pair of gesturing hands. You might try to bring a bit more of that into the pages in your painting. You might extend the bottom of the painting and make the ‘A’ shape wider and heavier at the base, similar to what I’ve suggested for audit’s piece ~ really the guy is like a rock or mountain, very imposing, with a massive black triangle leading up to and culminating with his face.

 Cheers,

Glenn,

Here is a little demo of what Blending Modes look like in Photoshop:

You can toggle through all of the different preset Blending Modes in the Layers Pallette in PS ~ each different blending mode affects how one layer blends with the one beneath it, as demonstrated below:

Wow, its been a few days since I had a look through this thread, so much has has been added

DigitalSol: outstanding work! :applause:

Queensoul: excellent, the way the image developed over time it just kept getting better and better.

Zephyri: a stunning update I’m very impressed with it.

SpiritDreamer: great rough start, I really like that brush strokes.

Hiiri: amazing!

Rebeccak: Thanks for showing us how you work, and with all those layers, wow.

#171

I fixed up a little bit, I worked more the upper hand, the book pages, and did the “A” excercise, hope u like it.

#172

Digital Sol: it is turning out really nice, an excellent render it is  :applause: … only critic would be that his left hand looks a little flat… - maybe you’ve just painted the bounced light a little too strong giving it kinda an outlined effect.

Corvax:

#174

Thanks for posting your WIP. I’m excited to see the start of your next painting!

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

#175

digitalsol: cheers for looking and thanks for the advice, have been darkening those areas and refining the face…
rebeccak: thanks for making me feel welcome…

kris

#176

kris,

You’re welcome! It looks like you’re progressing really nicely on this piece ~ my main suggestion would be to really notice how warm the lighter areas of the skin are ~ in grayscale mode, you would see that these ‘light’ areas on the face in particular really fall somewhere in the mid~gray range. The key I think is to have the colors warm and rich and not too light in terms of their value.

Looking forward to seeing your next update!

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

Hello everybody,
this is my first time participating in s drawing workshop. Your paintings are awesome!!! I have just recently started drawing and this is my humble contribution to this amazing workshop.
It is plain paper/pencil, but I intend to paint it further in PS as soon as I establish some more detail (face, wrinkles, improve proportions of the book, hand etc)

#178

ricma,

Great to see you joining in! This is definitely the next logical step after your really cool skull drawing, and I look forward to seeing how this progresses!

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

Krispee.
The face is lookin great, the deep shadows are working really good, keep on going.

Ricma.
You are very humble, the skull paint u did is outstanding, and the Rembrandt’s draw is pretty good, that will be a great paint.

Here is my update, I were painting it in painter, but I couldn’t get a good reasult so I get back to Ps, but Im trying with chalk brushes hope u like it

Argh, so many things to refer to and talk about, please know everyone that this has been an amazing read (I just today looked into this thread for the first time).

Rebecca - I really liked your little essay on tools and techniques and cheating

Maladie - your progress is frightening. You will be so good in no time.
skin takes on green shade

Queensoul - all the oil colour eating must have done you good. Spectacular progress.

Glenn - I found it funny somehow how everyone was flabbergasted at your beautiful and natural looking oil brush strokes and decided to give painter a try. The first one came back to Photoshop, beaten by Painter’s brush settings…:scream: (which I can understand, struggling with the same things right now) - anyway, this just shows that you know your stuff. Great painting.

keep it up, everyone!
