@Glenn.
I like very much your paint’s mood, the colors they are too much in the original, and the textures are looking really great, congratulations, great work.I will try Painter for the next portrait

@ThreedyModeler
Looking good.

@Rebecca.
Great update, i like very much the colors u are using, as for the method I think the base is the same (I mean play with the layer’s blending modes), but the execution is diferent, looking really great, u exposed the point very good the results depend enterly by the artist not in the tool that use, no matter if is traditional or digital, that is the same thing that once a student of mine ask, and same answer I gave.

All
There is a method called the seven layer method for painting in oils, is the method that I use in traditional oils, I learned it at the univ, as I know, it was created in the 16th centyury and great painters as Rubens, Van Duke or Snyders used it, it is very confortable for me, since as i said Im not good working in color and form at same time, when i learn to use the PS for paint, I tried to translate that technique to the digital media these are the steps.

Drawing on paper

Transferred to the painting

IMRIMATURA

1ST LAYER

2ND LAYER

4TH LAYER

DEAD LAYER

5TH LAYER

6TH LAYER

2ND BODY

7TH LAYER

aditional to this when u have the seven layers complete, u can colorize the paint with light oil washes, covering the underpaint created.

I think that one is better digital artist when u have painted in traditional before, because that way u think about the computer as a tool.

Aw, I almost forgot my update

Hey all,
been lookin in on the master copies. decided to chime in.
Heres a quick start - its not much but i kept puttin git off, so i thought it was time to chime in

my guy is a bit larger atm.But was using a pretty large brush for most of it.
Great work everyone - daunting how quickly you are all getting on with your pics - you know its 4 weeks long aye? or are you all doing multiple rembrandt copies :stuck_out_tongue:
Very inspiring.
And rebecca thanks so much for setting all this up - the best of the spotlight thread has consumed several hours of my work time already :stuck_out_tongue:
I know you really must dedicate a lot of time here and i just wanted to say how much we all appreciate it. Respect.
anyways off for some dinner.
update in a couple days (im away for the weekend

#146

Cavematty, looks like a good gestural start.

DigitalSol, the frills look great.

Rebeccak, I really like the grain texture you’ve got going.

Here’s tonight’s update:

#147

heehee once i posted i could see how off some parts were so i spent a lil longer correcting it.
plus someone turned up to work with food leftover from todays shoot so i got some yummy cake to tide me over for a bit
Heres the update:

#148

cavematty, nice colorscheme…keep it up!!
digitalsol: aahh where are the colors??
rebeccak: thats a great technique…though I don’t use it, it seems worth trying
Though I one would learn more by trying and blending colors instead of adjusting some hues with layeropacity’s etc. But maybe I am wrong.
I adjusted the eyebrow a little bit. better now?

I am stuck with the beard, its very hard, any tips/suggestions?

the overall:

I’m off for the weekend now

WOW! I think the discussion here is sooo interesting. It certainly has me thinking about workflow, artisticity (if that’s a word:)), colours, values, everything! Sometimes I almost get overwhelmed by this new world that’s so rich and fascinating (and then I have to sit down and have a cookie:)).

Rebecca, I would love to try your method. Just not sure I completely understand. Would you mind validating this guess:

  • make a black and white value layer
  • put a coloured layer on top
  • make a layer mask (?) for the areas you want to apply the colour to
  • experiment with the blending modes
  • make a new coloured layer and mask
  • experiment
  • merge satisfying result.

Right?

I was never that great at using masks, I don’t fully understand how to make and use them. I’ll see if I can get a book about it somewhere.
Btw, I thought your explanation about the computer as a tool was really great. It moved me. It was a friend of mine that I always thought was a total whizzkid, who explained something very similar to me and got me involved in cg and animation.
A huge thank you for your passion, help and dedication!!
(need another cookie now:))

Enrique,

Your Tutorial steps are great, thanks for that! And wow, the ruffles are just looking amazing! :arteest:

Cavematty,

Welcome aboard! It’s great to see your start. Thank you for your very kind words!

pierceda,

Thank you! Your update is looking great. Definitely great to see your work.

Cyanid
,

That’s looking really good! I’m really liking the painting so far of his right arm and hand.

Maladie,

Thanks for the kind words. You should bear in mind that as much as others are learning digital painting here, I am too. You don’t have to approach things in the same way as I do, nor do you have to approach things strictly according to anyone else’s formula. I’m setting down the base colors and will likely build more paint on top of the base as I continue with my painting.

For a really good explanation of the technique I’m using, see Stahlberg’s excellent Tutorial:
Jealousy Step by Step Digital Black and White to Color Painting Tutorial

He explains it much better than I can.

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

Cavematty:
I like the color scheme

Cianyd:
Lookin great, when Im makin hair or fur, I start from a dark base, it works better, and try to use some bristle brushes with smudge tool, that works for me.

here is a colorized update, hope u like it.

#152

Enrique thanks for the demo. Also your copy is wow!

Beh, this is where am at. Hey I was reading up on Rembrandt. He had a son named Titus. Is that who the model is?

#153

WOW…LOL…
A lot happened while I was sleeping…guess it pays to stir the pot of imagination once in
awhile…keeps the stew from stagnating and becoming stale…:scream:
I think it is great how everyone is applying the old principles of painting, that have evoled over
a long period of time, and are still evoleing… in this new medium…as evidenced by these paintings…the evolution continuies…GREAT…

Rebecca…THANK YOU…for your energy…explanations…and everything really…I THINK that
your painting and aproach or technique to this painting is …GREAT…

Enrique…THANKS, AND THANK YOU for the apple demo…made it a lot clearer to me about
the technique that you are using…knew it looked familar, but could not quite put mt finger
on it…think it is great that you have adapted that technique to this new digital medium…

Aggie…LOL…THANKS FOR OPENING THAT CAN OF …WORMS…:scream: …WORMS MAKE NEW DIRT, AND KEEP THE SOIL …FRESH …

TAKE CARE

wasnt sure if this thread was fiinished or not, so i thought id post anyway, id soon know....my first time posting here and i decided to go for Rembrandt as hes one of my favourite master painters.
here`s my start, i hope this is the right thing to post…

as you see don`t usually start with a sketch just get painting in some blocks of colour and start refining…
i was wondering what peoples opinion was on painting in the background, do you usually do that first or last?

#155

Enrique,

WOW! That looks awesome! Inspiring stuff again, and I can’t wait to see this finished! :bounce:

Queensoul,

Good grief, you are doing a number on this one! Keep up the amazing work!

Glenn,

Thank you for the comments!

krispee,

Welcome aboard! We are at the end of the first week of what is a 4 week Workshop. So there is plenty of time left here for everyone to post. It’s great to see your start, and there’s really no ‘right’ approach ~ however, I think it’s usually easiest to fill in the background first with a dark color as this kills the white ~ something that even traditional artists like to do immediately, and then work from dark to light. Looking forward to your progress!

Cheers,

Rebeccak.
Thanks a lot, glad it was understable, this is a method that almost nobody plays, because almost all, work with the color inmediatly, but I think that as everything it depends how u are more confortable, the most of the times, before begging my paint in oils or PS, i make a color scheme with prismacolors or watercolors, that way when I have my vlaues I paint refered with that scheme.

Queensoul.
Thanks a lot, yours is going great too, I like very much the texture on the cloth and the wall, as I know, the model of that paint was Rembrandt’s son Titus, once I went to a Rembrandt’s exposition here in Mexico, and I saw that Paint, it was wonderful, I think it will be the next I try.

Glenn.
Thanks a lot man, when I start to paint in PS, I didnt have a teacher or something like that, (I dont know about the other countries but in all Mexico, that I know, there is no body that teach digital painting, I have a project to open a school, with a good friend of mine) my only experience with the paint was in traditional so i tried to translate it to the digital media, and tried to get it complete with my PS knowledge as designer, thanks again, hope the demo was usefull.

krispee.
It looks very good, I always do one layer for the background and other for the foreground, that way the order dont matters, hope it was usefull, looking forward to see your updates.
