Hi Krispee
I did this in Painter IX and you are right, the colors seem washed out. I’m still a noob in painting, I will try to make a few improvements.
Cheers!

And here it is. I will jump to another painting now, I don’t think I’ll be able to improve anything in this one.

Hopefully I’m not too late to get started with this. I saw all of your beautiful WIPs and decided I just had to join in! I think that I’ll work on this in 30 minute intervals. Here is my first step after 30 minutes:

Azabache,
It’s great to see your first piece! I think that one thing you might try with this were you to work further on it is to further saturate the skin colors.
I would encourage you to check out the first few posts in the following Tutorial on Color:
Color Theory and The Human Figure - NUDITY
In particular, take a look at this post:
I think you have a great basis for further painting. I would encourage you to continue to work on this piece if you have the time and inclination.
Aurella,
Welcome aboard! My apologies for not replying sooner, but I have been out of town, and am now trying frantically to catch up with all the great stuff people have been posting over the weekend.
Lovely start with this ~ I would encourage you to keep pushing the value structure of your piece, and to gradually refine the value relationships, occasionally using a softer brush to blend as you continue to refine. Looking forward to your next update!
It would also be nice to hear a bit about your art training and background.
Cheers,
~Rebeccak
Hi Rebecca!! It’s great to have you back!!
Thanks for the tips, I really have to get better with the colors. I’ll try to improve that before moving on to another painting, thanks again for the links! ![]()
Cheers!

Cyanid,
This is really starting to look fantastic!
I’m really liking your consistently warm hues and the way you are consciously manipulating form. Keep after this! The main bit I would recommend is to try to homogenize a bit the background and areas which are in shadow, so there aren’t patches that look uneven. Apart from that, I would just say to keep going, your piece is looking terrific!
Cheers,
~Rebeccak
rebecca: thanks a lot! really encouraging…sometimes I am kinda staring blind on it.
however, there seems to be a difference between TFT and CRT monitor. I viewed my image from a CRT today and it looked very flat and kinda boring. the red hues were less bright. it has something to do with gamma settings? how can I fix this problem?
Cyanid,
Hmm, I'm not really sure, but [here is an article](http://www.vnunet.com/computeractive/features/2014042/getting-best-tft-monitor?vnu_lt=vnu_art_related_articles) about TFT vs CRT monitors which may be helpful.
From the article:
To display an image on an analogue CRT monitor the graphics card first has to convert its digital signal to analogue so it that can then be transmitted along the VGA cable to the CRT monitor. There's a risk of losing image quality during this conversion process, although this isn't really a problem for most modern CRT monitors, and they generally do produce excellent image quality. In fact, until relatively recently, many professional designers and photographers still preferred to use CRT monitors as they had a slight edge for high-quality photography or graphics work. That is no longer the case, though, and the latest TFT monitors provide superb image quality. But, to get the best image quality that the monitor is capable of, you will need to use a DVI interface rather than VGA.
Also, I would recommend posting this question here:
[Thread of Random and Common Questions...](http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=318896)
I don’t know how to remedy the problem ~ flat screen monitors I guess just give a slightly different image quality. It’s funny, though, because I still hear people say that CRT monitors give better picture quality.
Cheers, :)

A new OFDW ~ OFDW 017 ~ will be posted late Sunday / early Monday.
Looking forward to seeing everyone’s final pieces!
Does anyone have any preferences for what they’d like to see in the next OFDW? Post your suggestions here.
Cheers,
~Rebeccak
Can we have a model study again? But maybe with the intention to put him/her in an enviroment of our own choice?
I’m entering the process of finishing now I think.
are there major flaws (except the background issue) that I havent noticed? any tips on how to imrove it?
edit: hmm still it looks way better on my tft then on a crt.

No problem! Probably what I’ll do is to mix Master Copy choices with Model Reference images.
Cyanid,
I think things are looking great!
The main thing I would recommend at this point would be to soften your edge transitions in a number of places:
[left]I think you’ve gotten this successfully to the point where now all you need to do is to tweak and refine. Looking forward to seeing your final result!

Cyanid:Amazing work, specially the color palette, congratulations, I like it and very much. :applause:
Heya Becca, some time ago I was thining about to do a Master copy of one scene of the sistine chapel or just a detail, i always specially liked this one.

or maybe something of Degas.
I think that it’s all for me in this OFDW because I have much work, and my loved home computer catch a virus , but sure I’ll be in the next, everyone did a good work here.
Here’s my final image. I worked on it another 30-40 minutes last night. I probably won’t have any more time to put into it before the next workshop starts. It was a lot of fun and great practice participating in this. I can’t wait to get started on the next one!

Cyanid - looks great man … let’s see you finish it up!
phew, sorry i’ve been absent for so long! haven’t had occasion to look over all the work, but i have been subscribed. Some great stuff!
drawmonger - lovely sketches
rebecca - i envy your systematic approach and patience! You seem to be able to nail the values wonderfully, especially in that detailed area round the left eye. Do you work from a desaturated version of the original, or are you spotting values straight from it?
hiiri - fantastic, the hues are spot on
cyanid - heh, no Rembrandt eh? I do like the boldness of the transitions, but, as Rebecca has illustrated, they could be softer. I was also wondering about the proportion of the hand: could it be bigger? (haven’t seen the ref…)
i went into the frill-zone tonight. there remains much to be done. I hate the beard.
theedymodeler: nice work, darkly atmospheric, and the almost monotone look helps…
audit: like the work on the face and frill, keeping that shaprer and the other parts loose really draws attention to that area…
cyanid: love the rich colours in this, agree with Rebecca on the softer edges but good work otherwise…
rebecca: got no preferences as to what you post as ref next time…looking forward to participating, if i can get the time lol…
kris
