Open Figure Drawing Workshop - Rembrandt Master Copy - with Rebeccak 016

More awesome work here…

hiiri Great piece as is, I’d be curious to see what else you do with it, should you continue.
Krispee looking good, though just a quick fiddle with your levels would really help pull the the whole thing together, making that dark much darker will make the figure pop.
ceresz Great! soemone else chose to tackle that one… I was beginning to feel lonely! Nice start!
DigitalSol To say that’s a quick piece, it’s turned out really well… i like the orangey highlight on the eye in shadow. And love the pencil sketch for the next one. You’re on a roll!

And another update from me. Not a huge difference from last time on first glance, but the devil, as they say, is in the detail. And I’m a stickler for detail. Though I think I’m done with the figure now, just the background to sort, and then I’m done!

And some closeups:

queensoul: nice to see you here and there lol…

enrique: thanks i`ll try that…

Zephyri: dude, that is a serious piece of artwork, very nice indeed…love the highlights…and i get you on the shadows and greater contrasts…i`ll have a fiddle with mine near the end…

Wow… everyone is doing incredible work in here!

Here’s another hour on mine…

Gah… I think I need to adjust my gamma settings again… this looks a lot darker than it does in PS…

Hi Rebecca and Everyone
Refining colors and facial features etc. Sticking as close to the traditional method of painting on this one as I can and a computer allows for. Manually eye-balling and picking colors, thick oil brushes etc. Just plain old fashioned direct-painting method. Figure this will be the only method enabling me to get something even similar to the original.
Long ways to go yet!
Take Care
Glenn

[left]Hi, this is my first post ever in this forum, or any other related to CG. Let me present myself…I am from Brazil, and an architect, and i work with architectural visualization for about 10 years. I got a wacom (A4 intuos 3) some months ago and begin to learn painting in the computer…i draw since i can remember, but i never had studied it seriously. I am just loving all the new horizons that are opening for my creativity with digital painting…i love photography too and is my second passion…

I would like to congratulate Rebeccak for the wonderful work with these figurative art foruns…they are simply amazing…you, and all the people that help and support this forum, have all my admiration.

ok…

here is my try at this Rembrant copy…i would love to know what are my faults in this picture…it is a work in progresss…

First stages…took me about 2hs to complete.

[left]I am at this point now…fixing proportions, colors and adding details…Still WIP.

[center]

100% crop…

i would love to know your opinion…

Congratulations to all of you for the great work.

Daniel.

Krispee: Looking much better. Great going!

Cerez : Nice start!

ricma : Are you going to stipple that? wow.

Aedilhum: thank you

Maladie: Haha, I didn’t mean to be fishing for compliments or anything. It;s just that I’m suddenly all out of ideas and inspiration. Artist’s block and all that. Your image is looking very nice so far. I like the subtle textures on the nose.

DigitalSol: You’re going really fast, and great stuff so far. My only crit would be that the shadow side of the face is looking a bit flat right now, but I know you’ll work on that
And thank you  I’m totally and completely free from all college-related work starting tomorrow (yay for vacations) and I’m hoping to do another one.
I just scrolled down and there’s one more drawing! You’re going to do all 4, aren’t you?

daWinky: There’s lots of time, join in!

Cyanid : Thank you

Zephyri : I’m completely and utterly at loss for words. I looked at the full image and thought "wow, that’s really really good " and then I saw the close ups and you have all these subtle amazing textures there! And it all falls together so well, the tones, colours, textures- it’s better than perfect. I have so much to learn about textures, you must do a tutorial or something (pretty please?)
As for me, I think I’ve just painted my copy like I usually do, I haven’t played with textures a lot and I think I need to work on that part now.

ThreedyModeler: I like how it looks. The darks are strong, but they look good.

SpiritDreamer: Beautiful image! The brushwork is yummy!

wow, those pictures are amazing guys!!:scream:

hiiri, well, I guess Id stipple it entirely, Im not very excited about it actually, but It`s a good exercise anyway.
Here is a scanned drawing:

I still do not dare to start drawing his face… I was a bit lazy past few days:shrug:

Zephyri.
What can I say?, it is an awesome paint, its hard to say wich is the original and the copy, congratulation everything is perfect. :applause:

ThreedyModeler,
That piece is looking really good, much yours, I would only enlight the face, great work overall

Glenn.
Looking really great, I like that oily texture, really, great color use, as usual.

Hey Gomez, welcome on board, it seems u have been fixing the face a little bit, I just recomend that check the proportion of the pic, it looks a little bit widhter that the original, maybe if use a grid just for check the proportion, but about the rest is fantastic, I like the color use and the textures, keep on going you are doing a great work.

Hiiri.
Thanks a lot, I will do all 4, the next will be Titus, i have planned this as a quick paint too, and the last one will be Jeremia, in that I will spend the rest of the time, will really wait for your work :bounce:

Ricma.
your draw is looking good, but if were you better try something enterly traditional, for me the mouse is very unconfortable, but overall a great work.

Here is mine, I just a moment begging 5 minutes sketch hope u like it, you know that critics and coments are welcome, thanks.

#229

enrique: nice start on that, i need to go back and take another look at the refs, forgot already lol

ricma: looking really nice, you`ve got the head shape right on…look forward to the facial detail…

hiiri: cheers, better get some more done, getting lazy!

gomez: like it, nice painterly feel yet you`ve got some detail as well, want to see the hands, and watch the eyes, they look a little close together…

spiritdreamer: love the work, you`re using a really painterly brush in Painter, really gives the strokes some depth…look forward to the finish…

good work everyone…
kris

Zephyri,

WOW! You’re really nailing this one. I’m especially enjoying the metal pieces which you are painting ~ spectacular work there!

ThreedyModeler,

Nice value structure so far! I am really liking the dark tones of the piece…it has a silver print / photographic quality to it which is really cool.

Glenn,

I think this is coming along great, it is one of my favorite pieces by you! Keep going, this should be a really great one.

Gomez,

Welcome aboard! It’s great to have you here, and you are making some really nice progress! Keep pushing your modeling using lights and darks, and continually reevaluating things in terms of form. Keep up the good work!

ricma,

Let’s see some facial features!

Enrique,

Wow, you are really plowing through these! I would say to slow down a little bit and to try to go for quality more than quantity. Your pieces are really turning out beautifully, don’t water them down!

Great work here guys!!

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

#231

Did a little work on the face.

#232

Enrique,

Wow, a very ghostly pallor so far ~ I really like that. Looking forward to seeing your refinements of the face.

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

#233

ok, finished this now, could still work on it more, not very happy with the face, not quite right in some areas, like the eyes…and my shadows could still be darker as well…but i`ve learnt quite a bit from doing it…
also like to thank everyone for their help…

enrique: very chilling kind of look on the face there and it will be interesting where you go with this…very impressionistic as well, will you leave it roughly painted in some places or finish it all off?
also tried to load the brushes but it told me that it wasn`t compatible with my version…i have v6 of PS.

rebecca: thanks for letting me take part in your forum…will be back for more…

kris

#234

kris,

It’s been great to have your participation, and I hope you’ll stick around to comment on others’ pieces as well! Also, it will be great to have you back for more OFDWs, in addition to which, you are free to create your own Anatomy Thread if you wish.

I think you’ve really captured the essence of the expression really well. One suggestion in general is that the face would be set off more if the background on the viewer’s left were darkened in value quite a lot. If you squint your eyes at the original, you can see that there is a tremendous difference between the darker, desaturated background, and the lighter, more saturated gold whites of the turban. Also the background carries a bit of a greenish tint and is not totally black.

Overall you’ve done a great job here, and I hope to see you back for more OFDWs!

rebecca:
Hahaha,Yeah it looks a bit like a gosth :scream:, thanks for check my work.

Krispee.
:applause: Very well done kris, I like it very much, maybe Im not the indicated person to tell u this, but perhaps you could add some texture to the paint, if u add a new layer in painter, and check the box, pick underlaying color at the layer palette, and paint with a brush withouth resat you can add the brush texture without add paint, maybe u could try that. over all great work, congrats.

I will make refinements later I like that rought look on the paint, but I want some detail level, thanks for look at my work.

Unfortunly, PS6 dont have all the dynamics that PS CS2 owns, and the brushes wont work on it, sorry, but I think i dont needed too much after see your work, see ya.

#236

[left]This is my progress after 5h…I see that there are things to fix…and some proportions that are incorrect…i like the result, because it was my first try at copy a paint. I am having difficults trying to find the right proportios…i didn´t used any paintover or color picker in the original picture…What are your methods to draw the right proportions ? i followed some advices here, but i think i am still having problems with proportions.

I learned some things on this…

  1. It is best to make a line drawing on the begning, and define the proportions on this step of the work.

  2. It is amazing how many different tones and hues whe can find on a skin…

  3. The use of negative space is very important…and well used in this composition…

  4. Hands…are difficult to paint. : )

I will stop at this stage, at start another one of the other pictures…

the picture…and details at 100% and a closeup of the eyes at 200%.

thats very nice daniel!

spiritdreamer: interesting technique! you use painter i suppose?

ricma: nice start, must be a very slow process, all the dotting! now get working on the face!

lost track of time…

#238

Hi…Gomez …I like your painting VERY MUCH …glad you chose not to use paint bucket,
and all the other tricks available…on your first copying of a masterpiece…think you would
have only ended up tricking yourself, if you had…and would not have gotten the full benifit
and learning experience that goes with copying a master painter.
I have not looked at the original, but I can say that your painting stands strong on it’s own merits…GREAT BRUSH WORK, COLOR, AND SOLID DRAFTMANSHIP …
GREAT JOB THERE…l am looking forward to seeing more of your work.
The proportion problem can be solved easily at the start, by really checking out the areas of
negitive space …large and small, that suround the figure

Cyanid
YES, I use painter# 9…one variable size oil brush
like the mood of your painting very much,…think it can stand more subtle color variations
throughout…will give it more volume and enhance the mood even further

Rebecca…THANK YA …

TAKE CARE
Glenn

Daniel.
I like your paint, yes, it have some problems with the proportion, but overall is a great work, if u use the negative space as reference it will work well, but if you want to copy it exactly, I recomend that u use a grid for drawing the lineart or the first wash of your paint, it makes easy everything, but you delay more in the start of the paint, is something that I made with the same paint that u did, for being your first copy its a fantastic work, hope to see more of your work around here.

Cyanid.
Fantastic work,

Here is mine, I did some work in my character, hope u like it.

:wip:

#240

rebecca: cheers, i got foxed by the background on the left, im not sure it even maybe has some sky blue in it, and darker does work better with the turban, also noticed that my turban is a little bit wonky, lol.....a very dark green would work on the right, didnt see that…i think ill leave the Anatomy Threads to you professionals.....i dont know where you find the time!

cyanid: i`m a bit confused, where was the ref for your piece?

enrique: coming along, i looked at the ref and the face a very pale isn`t it…good work…
no worries on the PS thing…thanks for trying…
