DigitalSol,
thanks a lot  The problem is I havent got a clue about painting in PS, so far Ive only managed to paint a layer in a specifoc color and change its mode from normal to something else, and make a huge stack of them…click a few times with airbrush here and there :arteest:

Your work is amazing by the way!!!

ricma,

I know you’ve seen the Anatomy Review 003 as evidenced by your lovely skull piece, but you might consider revisiting this recently compiled thread, which should, I think, help to get you started on working digitally using a limited pallette of three values: black, white, and gray.

TUTORIAL SUMMARY - Anatomy Review 003 Shading Tutorial - Tutorial Material Only

[left]I’ve taken all of the Tutorial material and compiled it into one thread and closed the thread for posting so that just the tutorial material remains and is easier to browse.

Having said that, you are more than welcome to use a combination of traditional and digital, or to only work traditionally. In fact, working traditionally is really important and shouldn’t be overlooked as an important part of one’s development as an artist. Feel free to work how you choose.

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

Ricma:
Thanks a lot, my recomendation is, paint with large brushes first with the shape dynamics, and other dynamics set in large areas, and then paint with small bruses in small areas, these are my settings

Thick Heavy Brushes gallery are my favorite Photoshop default brushes, or why not to work traditional a render with chancroal, pencils or prismacolor, sccan it and then colorize it, will wait for ur work

My update:
A close up

I want to keep some little roughe chalkie look, a good friend show me a trick to paint something in PS and then rework it in Paiter for the look, I will try this later, hope u like it.

LOL!! …MR MU…:scream: .

Just don’t forget, that I have seven years of experimenting, and well over a thousend failures
behind me in that PAINTER program, …and there is still a lot of things in it that I have not
tried, and do not understand…and I am pretty sure that i’m not the only one in that boat.
ROME WASN’T BUILT IN A DAY…it took a lot of life’s time…and had a whole lot of failures
along the way…same thing applies with any of these programs I think.
I think that everyone in here is doing a fantastic job, and it is impossible to not get better,
with a lot of effort, practice, and of course failure’s along the way.
Nice to see you back in action…MR MU…SO …WHERE IS THAT FIRST PAINTING DONE
WITH YOUR BRAND NEW PAINTER# 9…TOY…THROW THE INSTRUCTIONS AWAY, AND
JUST PAINT… :scream:

Hi…Enrique…Really like that chalk effect…worked really nice in Zephyri’s painting also.
GREAT JOB so far by the way…

TAKE CARE
Glenn

 Alright guys, I am a little scared to show my face now, but I felt I should. Rebecca, I know that even in digital art you need the artistic ability to put something down on the virtual canvas. I understand the putting down of layers to build a painting. I know that the old masters did this as well. What I didn’t understand was it looked like a click of the mouse to get from a monochromatic painting to a beautifully color rendering. This was my own stupidity of not knowing how the software does this. I see brushes, tubes of varying colors of paint, thinner, etc. when I am painting. This is all but missing inthe digital world.

:wip: I deserved that wipping for bringing up such a topic in a soley digital forum and expected it, right Spirit. Rebecca, I know you are a expert in art and understand all avenues of creating and discussing it. I hope you and all the digital artist will forgive my ignorance and allow me to stay and watch the experts at work here.

Oh, guys, one more question…
Do all of you paint with a stylus?

Did I forget to say I don`t have one? :banghead: So is it good idea for a beginner like me to paint with a mouse only?:arteest::curious::hmm:

#187

aggie,

LOL, forums are nothing if not for the exchange of ideas and work / WIP. I think your question gave me a good opportunity to sort of put into words some of the random gibberish that floats around in my mind from time to time ~ your question was a really good one, and definitely worth addressing! From my point of view (which is not an ā€˜expert’ point of view, by the way) digital art has advantages and disadvantages, just as does traditional art. I’ve personally struggled to connect emotionally with the process of creating digital art ~ I admit to ā€˜feeling’ a lot more when I draw and paint traditionally than I do when painting digitally. But I’m also very interested in digital painting and artists that I encounter here on the forums are really pushing me to try to improve. Frankly, prior to joining CGTalk I wasn’t aware of the extent to which digital art ~ 2D or 3D ~ could be taken. So it’s a huge learning curve for me as much as for anyone else, and I think about the same questions as you do. So there’s no need to hide, aggs, you’re always welcome for participation of any kind! Frankly, I still consider myself more of a traditional than a digital artist. The road can sometimes be slow going, but the forum has definitely made the transition a lot more fun.

EDIT:

ricma,

It’s really tough to paint with a mouse. I would definitely advise against it. I would recommend working traditionally until you can get a Wacom tablet or other stylus. There are lots of threads on CGTalk about tablets, I would just run a search, and you will find many threads devoted to the subject. But painting with a mouse is dangerous ergonomically as you can get nerve damage to your hand, wrist, and arm called carpal tunnel syndrome. So I would definitely advise against it.

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

Glenn.
Thanks for looking, The chalk brushes are a little hard to control for me, in the last paintings I was painting with the grid on, to get all the close I can to the orginal, but my brushe were more stable than this, yeah, Zephyri’s painting is awesome, with a such beautiful technique.

krispee
Aw Thanks, I recomend that you experiment with the default galleries, some of them are great, here are the brushes Im using by the way, some of them are modification of existent brushes others are mine, try them with the smudge tool too, glad to be helpful.

Art2.
Beautiful lineart start, good to see im not the only one that start with linework, really looking for your next update.

Ricma.
Will wait to see your work:), BTW Neville Page haves a DVD here http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/npa02.html explaining how to colorize a traditional B/W render, in PS, basicly, he uses brushes with differents blending modes such colorize, multiply and softlight, good luck on your paint.

#194

Glad you guys like the sketch, here’s hoping the final painting will be acceptable too.
I can’t wait to get started!

DigSol, yeah, I wanted to make sure the proportions, elements, comp etc were correct.
And Artrage has this handy ref pic feature.

Heheh… I wanted to give him a Kangol logo or some other Hip (Hop) logo, but I couldn’t remember how they look like, LOL… So, I chose Nike
Don’t worry, it won’t show in the final painting

Hey, I quoted some ā€œCGtalkerzā€ā€¦ (Mu, you and ricma)
I know you are Miss CGtalk.
I understand your misunderstanding :stuck_out_tongue:

Haha, I don’t dare to include any kind of logo in the final

#197

Ah…carry on.

#198

art2: very nice sketch to start, look forward to seing your painter work…

enrique: thanks for the brushes, downloaded, i`ll check them out soon…

rebecca: i`ve done some more work on the face, brushed over it all with a large opaque brush using a golden colour to blur everything and then blocked everything back in using warmer colours i think…

maybe its too painterly.....ive always regarded Rembrandt as being a more painterly painter myself…

krispee,

Nice progress on this so far! You’re building things carefully, and that’s good to see. There’s a saying in traditional painting which you may know, which is to paint ā€˜fat on lean’ ~ in other words, to build your paint up slowly, and not adding really bravura style strokes til the end and all the color / value relationships are worked out.

I still think you can go darker with your tones ~ here’s a comparision of your version and the original, for the purpose of showing how deep and rich Rembrandt’s color choices are:

and just as another way of looking at things, I’ve blurred the same comparison:

[left]Painting the background a darker hue will also help to bring out the saturated richness of the face. Also notice that Rembrandt has gone with a complementary color scheme in terms of the background color and the flesh tones ~ the background is a desaturated green and the flesh tones more in the red range, with lighter pinks being tints of the hue red.

You may not need it, but here is a link to a post that describes color terms in a bit of depth.

Hope this helps! Keep up the great work!

Cheers,

~Rebeccak
