Open Figure Drawing Workshop - NEW BARGUE - 022

#261

Wow… this workshop is freaking flying! I cant believe the amount of work Ive missed since I last posted. Unbelievable work everyone. Standouts for me are evilmaul, zhuzhu, spiritdreamer… really like what you guys are doing.

Heres my latest wip… its coming together slowly. Im trying to take my time and not rush things. A few problems already came up which I’ll need to fix soon… the face for one is getting away from me. Hopefully I’ll have more time this week to work on establishing more of my darks.

Another few hours with it (when I should really be working) This painting lark is quite addictive once you get started.
I’m not really qualified to give crits in the 2d forum, so I’ll just say well done to all.

These are somewhat intimidating pieces to work from for me, I find it easy to slip into an attempt to reverse engineer the 3D instead of seeing the piece – but I did take a shot:

Pencil + Paper while watching the AFC championship game. Didn't have the time, ability, or inclination to do the myriad of wrinkles and pores that form a lot of the character in this face, but I learned a little about the muscles of the face, the brow ridges, etc, -- so a good experience all told.

Awesome workshop to watch... very cool to see all those wonderful interpretations in 2d. Great to see ZhuZhu back, and thanks for the WPE :).

Shame what happened to Intervain's file, it's a very nice piece, that must have been disheartening.

Nice ballpoint work NR43, shading and contrast are very nice -- maybe a little more sharp definition within the face to highlight some muscles might tighten it up a bit (if it should be tightened at all... heres where being far from an expert is a problem :)).

Very lush and full feel in the body MechaHateChimp, look forward to your adjustments in the face, but it'll also be nice to see how you handle the lower leg and feet (until you trim off that outline it really pulls the eye down). Sepia works nicely.

Spiritdreamer layout on the true likeness version is very well laid out, be interesting to see how it comes together as you've kept a life and vitality to it that is tough to hold on to with an in depth rendering.

Oddity goes to show that an eye for sculpting translates well to an eye for painting, grats.

Coming in this late there are an overwhelming number of pages to comment on, but it's really good stuff coming in and a lot of progress being made, congrats all round :).

I finally decided to install my tablet onto this temp. computer I’m using and started another piece.

Balduran…Nice start…Keep going with it,…see how many lights and darks you can capture…really carve it out…Make your darks DARKER, and your lights LIGHTER…Don’t be afraid to mess up with the likeness…Just get used to searching for those subtle values of light and dark…KEEP GOING, YOUR DOING GREAT…

Deser…NICE START…

A little more refinement on mine…Searching for color values…using my own eyes and judgement.

ODDity - I have to say, I really admire your models… as far as absolute precision/beauty, your work really does take the cake for me. Its an absolute pleasure working from them and sorry I didnt get a chance to reply back when you first posted. I know you stated that youre not qualified to give crits in the 2D forum, but I have to disagree. Its obvious you have an accute eye for how the human form should look like and your drawing is already coming out fantastic. I wouldnt hold back from sharing what you feel about the work posted here if I were you. I think we’d all benefit from what you have to say and I for one would consider your opinion invaluable.

DiM, zhuzhu, kary, SpiritDreamer - thank you for the comments!

Heres my latest update. Still trudging along. I started working some of the lighter values in. Im thinking at this pace I should be done by this weekend… hopefully :surprised

Such fantastic work coming in! Keep it up guys.
I can’t stay long and comment on individual pieces cause I’m in a rush, but here’s a progress image, 10 minutes at a time for what I’m working on.

Larger crop of the current stage:

she looks a bit like a man right now, and rather sad compared to the reference, but that’ll all get fixed soon.

happy painting, and thanks again for this workshop!
