Welcome to the Twentysecond thread of the Open Figure Drawing Workshop!

This workshop is open to 2D Artists working digitally or traditionally. Some informal moderation will be gladly provided ~ however, the purpose of the Workshop is for Artists to interact with and informally critique one another’s work.

     What is a Bargue Drawing?

Charles Bargue is a little known academic painter from 19th Century France. Under the auspices of art dealers Goupil and Cie (Vincent and Theo Van Gogh’s employers,) and along with Jean-Leon Gerome, he produced a series of two hundred or so lithographs, reproductions of which were circulated around the ateliers of the time for students to copy. Copying these drawings is supposed to teach the student about line and tone, how to create an illusion of three dimensional reality, and also to instil a sensitivity to classical beauty in painting and sculpture.

This Workshop is an update of the Bargue concept, which was to copy as accurately as possible the 2D Drawings of Charles Bargue et al. Instead of using Bargue's drawings as reference in this Workshop, we will be using Renders of 3D models, whose permission to use as reference was graciously provided by many CGTalk 3D Artists.

The goal of this Workshop is to practice shading and rendering skills in 2D. For this reason, in many cases I have requested permission to use renders of untextured models as reference.

The goal of this Workshop is to COMPLETE one or more FINISHED 2D Master Copies of the renders provided by CGTalk 3D Artists / Render Donors. The goal is to complete QUALITY finished pieces based on the 3D Renders / Reference provided.

The renders used as reference for this Workshop is COPYRIGHT the original artists. Permission has been obtained from individual 3D Artists to use only specific individual renders for this Workshop. Wherever you post your 2D copies from this Workshop (here on CGTalk, on your website, other forums, etc.) you MUST give credit to the original artist whose work you referenced!

PLEASE NOTE that you may not just use any image from individual 3D Artist's CGPortfolios without permission. There is simply a ton of great reference available here, so I would ask that you use what is available and not request to use other work from these artists.

A big thank you to gio for being the first render donor for the Workshop!

This is a great chance for 2D Artists to work from some of the best 3D renders around. Hope to see a lot of participation in this one!

PLEASE NOTE that you may not just use any image from individual 3D Artist's CGPortfolios without permission. There is simply a ton of great reference available here, so I would ask that you use what is available and not request to use other work from these artists. Thanks!

Examples of traditional Bargue drawings may be found here.

rubs eyes

another OFDW, yay!

wow, beautiful renders!

keeps an eye on his fingers so he does not make any statement about participation even though…

I’m so in :D:bounce:

Hi Rebecca,

so are 3d ppl who uses 2d medium as well (traditional or digital) excluded from this workshop?

cheers,
Marco

#10

Of course not. This workshop is for anyone who wishes to use the 2D medium - be it traditional or digital. It doesn’t matter to me whether your primary mode of working is 2D or 3D - in the past, the OFDWs have attracted mainly 2D people, and so I invited Intervain to create 3D specific Workshops, which you are more than welcome to participate in also. This workshop however is primarily 2D. Hope to see your work!

thats good news  i am definitely in.
good luck to all.
Marco

Mu, Intervain, and evilmaul, it’s great to see some early takers! I think this is an amazing chance to work from some beautiful work. I’m pretty stoked, hoping to get in some work later on tonight.

#13

oh, let’s do this thing

#14

hey Rebbecak, post this on conceptart.org, I’d love to see some of those freaks try this out!

#15

Done, and done. Hoping the “freaks” (probably a little tired from the workshop, like me :D) will come out in droves once they’re sufficiently recovered from Seattle. Feel free to do a little pimpage, though. I’d like to keep the Workshop only here, though, due to the fact that copyrighted images are involved, etc.

Two questions:

  1. In the case I think some spots of one of the renders should look different, am I free to make some minor changes? (of course that would be my humble opinion about the art, all images are top notch!)

  2. Can I work in pencil only? Would that be considered unfinished? I ask this because the “draw and paint” item in the rules.

I’m a 3d guy mostly, but I have learned to draw way before I started with 3D. Still, I got stuck with pencils, never got any further. So I wouldnt be able to paint and it would really great to finally participate in one of this threads.

#17

Yep, feel free to take liberties, I am using the term “Bargue” here pretty liberally. Mainly I’m just interested in seeing artists who participate use the 3D render reference for great lighting and form ref, and the rest is up to you. For beginners (that’s not necessarily you), I think it’s best to stick as close to the reference as is possible. Obviously the goal if you are interested in really learning how to render is to most closely match the ref without tracing, color sampling, etc. I myself don’t plan to try to match pore for pore, but just try painting from several different images to see how close that I can get. I may end up doing a bunch of unfinished studies in addition to hopefully some more polished work.

Yep, this Workshop is open to both digital and traditional work.

I think that’s great, we’ve had traditional work in previous Workshops and I really don’t mind at all. I think whatever helps you to better see / observe is relevant to CG, so pencil draw away to your heart’s content, and post your work here.

#18

Wow, it’s been a while since we’ve had a 2D one (or I’ve just been missing them). Good timing, as I’m about to start working on some plates a friend let me scan. The renders provided look great, and I’ll happily try one or two. I’ll be posting both here and on CA.org.

This is a great exercise and I can’t wait to see the results that come out of this! I will be watching this thread closely.

Pameljoel, welcome!

Good to have you aboard! I’ve not run a free Workshop in a year, and so am stoked to see what will happen with this one.

dansgarbage, great, hope that you will participate!
