Open Figure Drawing Workshop - Mixed Masters - 020

Great to see how everyone’s progressing!

Eduart - Nice work - I like the emotion and play of light that you are capturing

The Patches - Nice soft lines and a good start to building up some values too - must be frustrating having the computer freeze up on you all the time… I guess that “language” is permitted in such circumstances

Vincent - Congratulations on finishing Biondina  She looks really lovely!
Esp now that these copies are progressing quite far; it’s almost strange seeing versions of one that I’ve been staring at for so long - well done!

YMS - Great update there, and I really like the likeness you are getting, both in his looks and his expression  keep going!

AztcFireFlower - great work! You captured her pose and her strength beautifully

NR43- Can’t wait to see more of this lady, progressing from Picasso to stunningly captured eyes… to…? keep going! Assuming you are working in greyscale and are going to baffle with the instant blow me away colourisation that you digital people do so well?

Rebeccak - See above  even though it’s just a taste of things to come; your colour test - looking good!

Craban - Nice “look in” to your workspace - think you were already selfcommenting on some of the issues and progressing well - keep it up

Mal-1 - Nice work, it’s ok to crop at times - do you plan on doing anymore? or are you going to call it Christmas???

Intervain - I really like the painting you’ve done, she looks wonderful - and that dress… is to die for! pity fashion has changed so much! My only comment as far as critique (and mentioned only because I’ve seen how far you can push things and what amazing skills you have in digital painting… :wip: ) Looking at her neck - the right side (her left) - Lightening that shadow a bit would make the necklace more visible and show the chain resting on her collarbone and neck line, rather than looking as though it’s cutting into her neck.

Great work everyone!

no time for update yet, but hope to be back tomorrow

cheers all and take care
a.

Hi all.
Small update about next 1.5 hour. ( I try to keep account time spent on work. Simply interestingly how many it will turn out in the ending.)

Small update on the dress.

Hello everyone,
My name is Bronwen and this is my first time I’m trying this Old Masters Minichallenge.
I chose number 19, mainly because I’m lazy and I can work in monotones. I am not a professional, or even trained in the area of art past high school, so please forgive as I try to learn.

Here is my basic sketch drawn with the grid system. Critique welcome please.

#345

Hi Bronwen
Don’t worry…we are here to learn…so you are most welcomed
cheers

decided to have a go at no. 17, the Birth of Venus but in graphite, unfinished and not a great photo but you get the drift…

haven`t got time to comment but from a quick scan of the works here there is some great art here…

Started my work with Painter IX. I am having troubles, it is my first time painting with this medium and just cannot get to grips with it. I studied Oil Painting in college, but I just do not feel as connected to this digital oil than I do with the real deal. Any tips or something to aid me along?

I also have Photoshop.

I started with sketching it all out with the 2B pencil Brush and also used layers for each segment of the figure (head, clothing, features…). I then found the ‘middle-tone’ for each section, and then started blocking in with the Bristle Brush. This I found I had very little control, but I thought that this would be good as it makes me avoid detail early on. Then I start going to the High-tones (shadows), to form depth, excluding Low-tones at this stage (Highlights). But this is making it look muddy, and I dislike looking at this as I work. I am also tempted to paint in the features, but dislike the muddy affect so much I do not want to go to features until I ‘fix’ this.

Tips please? I would use Photoshop (most familiar), but I thought I would use this as I can use real world medium effects.

HEY…F13wk / Andrew…

I am using PAINTER # 9 …I do the painting on one layer, in the BMP SETTING…LESS PROBLEMS
I just save versions as I go along, when I reach a stage in the painting worth saving…like…SAVE AS INGRES #1…2 3…4 ECT…That way of doing it , makes it close to like painting on a real canvas,…plus you can go back to an earlier version if you get way off track for some reason in your curent version…:scream:
Plus you can work at a high resolution, because you are working on a single layer all the time…won’t have problems like you will run into if you are working multi layered in the RIFF mode at a high resolution…
You might try experimenting with some of the brushes in the TINTING section…to get the stroke you want,…then in there is a brush called SOFTENER…GREAT for the edges of the strokes…you might experiment with it a little…over and around your strokes
Also in the BLENDER section…I have been using the SOFT BLENDER STUMP #30…just ajust the brush sizes to fit your needs…I have just been using one brush from the tinting section, ajusting it’s size as needed, and the softener brush, also adjusting it’s size as needed, and a very little bit of the blender to push some of the stuborn edges of color into place …The combination of those three brushes might work for you…don’t know, but it’s worth a try…

i think i jus went crazy, but thats what im best at:scream: im gonna try another ofwd and this time iv chosen image 10.i don no if it’l b done in time or not but i’l sure try to make it well:thumbsup: keep it up ppl

Thank you Glenn.

As you can see, I did not really mess with any settings, i just jumped right into the defaults and went from there. It seems with computer graphics you need to actually customize things to get the right affects. With traditional you can apply things depending on the input of pressure and direction. Sue digital can do this, but it seems you have to tell ‘it’, not your hand.

I will start again, but this time play around at first looking at the settings, brushes, and single layer work.

#352

One question, how do I set specific brushes to hot keys?? It would make things more efficient. I like the brushes you recommended, they are similar to Photoshops. Thanks for that!

#353

Sorry, I had i little problem with the posting… so I remove this one, that was the same than the next.

SpiritDreamer : Wow, yours take a big step i think! Love your progress!

Rebecca : I really like the sharpness of your painting. The dress is beautiful.

Eduart : Looks very good!

The Patches : Thats a beautiful start.

AztcFireFlower : Cool, a finished piece! You did it very well. Congratulations

Intervain : Congratulations too, its a very nice work you have done :scream: ! Your color pass work very nicely. I tried to do mine yesterday night, and was a bit disapointed  I think maybe its because my b&w version is not enough good, i mean the values.I will have for sure to do a normal layer on top to touch up the colors.

Mal-1 : Nice work… even if you dont want to finish it :stuck_out_tongue: But I totally understand you… I choose a less datailed one than yours and I have a hard time to finish it… and more it was your second one :scream:

Krispee : Beautiful drawing… and not a so bad picture, in fact i didnt notice it was one :stuck_out_tongue:

I had some time yesterday to continue mine. I tried to smooth the face and remove the original black lines. I dont know when I will have the courage to the the hair
I know there is something different in her face than the original, but I cant really put the finger on it. I feel less life in her eyes than in the original  The mouth looks different too, but dont see what exactly is the problem
Tried a color pass, and dont really like it too… I like the progress I did so far, but see a lot a small things that bothers me… grrr

#355

Thanks Calan…man you are doing a great Job with this, you have more patience than me!

I’ve been lulled back in with this one…Just a head study though!

Giving Artrage a whirl…as it often gets a bad deal sitting next to photoshop & painter, so I’m trying to bring it back:thumbsup: .

#356

I just couldn’t resist coloring it any longer:arteest:

#357

HladekStepan: Very nice values and drawing. But i think some edges could be a bit harder.

Mal-1: I really like those traditional looking brush strokes.

calan: Looks very good and very detailed.

Painting in greyscale again right now:

#358

SaraD - the cloth is looking beautiful!

calan - I think your b&w is perfect - love the lips! I had to touch mine up on a normal layer as well [well actually almost the entire chair was repainted because I didn’t like how the values one turned out under the color layer!]

Mark - that’s really looking great!

HladekStepan - are you using smudging or just soft brushes? I think it’s too blurry - it would benefit from some harder edges  try it

Vulturius - that’s gorgeus! Keep going :bounce:

#359

Hello, well here is my Try, I might try a few, just for practice, I am trying to break out of my style…which doesn’t seem to be very popular. But, seems like my style just sticks with me. I used an Wacom 6 x 8 and my new iMac running Artrage 2, which is pretty cool for $19.

F13wk - I think you might like Artrage, its quick, has many of the same features as Painter!

Wow…lots of images have been added since I last dropped by. Great work!

Glenn, You’ve been busy! Good work on his expression and he has very nice eyes!

Rebecca, You have really captured her and the coloring is lovely. Again fabric is awesome!!

Intervain, you really need to frame your image!

Vulturious…really coming along well, very nice work so far overall and on her face, arms and hands.

Krispee…lovely drawing looking forward to an update.

Mal-1, It is a great start, a head study is a nice idea. I may decide to try that as well. Hope you finish.

There are so many new images and I’m sorry I can’t reply to all. Keep painting!
