#163

Feel a lot better about this study, than the others.

#164

Yep me again…showed this on another forum and was given a little info to show that a few things were off.

I also asked Zhuzhu what brush he used in his recent sketch, he was kind enough to tell me and so armed with that I set about another head study, here is the result.

#165

uf… little more progres…

#166

Mazalo you deserve a reward for perseverance…this is amazing!!

#167

Okay, some belated replies to all of the amazing work you guys are doing…this thread is moving too fast to keep up! :bounce:Starting from the most recent post so I don’t accidentally comment on older WIP versions…

mazalo,

Simply amazing that you are tackling this complex piece, and even more amazing how much progress you have made here in such a short amount of time. Keep up the fantastic work!

Mark / Mal-1,

Nice work here! I agree that this is the best so far of all the pieces you’ve done so far for this OFDW. I think that if you added a layer of texture or grime and set it to a low opacity and to a blending mode, it would add a lot of interest to the piece. Since these paintings are so old and because we are experiencing them only through reproductions, a bit of guesswork must be made as to the actual color / value relationships, but I would suggest making your piece darker and richer, and more textured in terms of the grain of the canvas. Looking forward to your progress!

FateBringer,

The new study of the head is much better, but I still think her right eye seems a bit too far to the viewer’s left. Her face feels a bit wide, you might want to narrow that a bit in your final drawing. I assume your drawing is on paper, are you going to transfer that to canvas?

drawMonger,

CONGRATULATIONS! I didn’t realize you guys were expecting, so that’s great to hear! Congrats on the new baby!!!

Thanks so much for these awesome preparatory drawing refs, they’re gorgeous. Well, we hope we don’t completely lose you the wonders of new fatherdom, but of course it’s completely understandable if we do!

claybub,

Awesome progress on this, I suppose the next step is just bringing the background up to the level of the foreground figure and really adding those refining finishing touches. Really play up the deepness / darkness of the base of the picture, which adds so much drama to the face.

womanonfire,

I think you have a fantastic start! I think someone had mentioned with reference to your question about painting details that you should work at a large resolution (printing res, 300 dpi and at a suitable size in inches) which you may already be doing. Apart from that it’s actually a good idea when blocking in the initial areas of color and value to zoom your image to a relatively small percentage and to just mass the major areas in from that ‘distance’. This helps enormously to simplify and to not get caught up in detail areas too quickly. My main recommendation is not to paint the toenails in before really establishing these major areas first.

Enrique,

Just gorgeous work, this piece has a lot of feeling behind it and it’s great to see ~ looking forward to those updates!

eilidh,

Hope you feel better! Nice progress on this, I like the careful deliberation here. I don’t know if you’ve seen botched’s WIP of his OFDW 017 piece, but it’s really good and linked here:

http://www.botched.com/index.php/blog/discourse/ofdw17_step_by_step/

Definitely check it out, as as you know, he worked beautifully in pencil as well.

YMS,

Keep going, you’re making good progress!

xiannc,

Great update here, looks like you are well on your way  ~ one thing I might recommend is going a bit darker in the overall tone for the dress, so that you can more easily pull lights out for the highlights ~ with the midtones so light in the value range, you might have trouble seeing the highlights since that pale warm orange is so resonant. Just a suggestion ~ keep up the good work!

Glenn,

That’s looking gorgeous, and I can’t wait to see your final version of this!

hiiri,

That’s looking fantastic! Keep up the great work, it’s great to have you aboard here.

Aggie,

Nice start here. I’ve never used watercolor pencils before, but I imagine that they give you a greater degree of control. I really look forward to when you will be getting a wacom…I have a feeling that you will be able to push your work much, much further when working digitally.

David / Corvax,

I think that the figure has turned out beautifully, but I would love to see more done to the background. The face and sleeve are most convincing, with the sleeve being I think the most beautiful area of the painting ~ it would be great to see the rest of the coat receive the same treatment. Nice work here, although I definitely think that you could put in a few more hours and really turn out a beautiful portfolio piece.

Womball,

One thing I really recommend is to fill the white canvas with a mid tone, so that you don’t have to work hard to establish it when painting. Also choose maybe one hue, say a rich brown, and choose a really light tint of brown, a midtone brown, and a dark brown and create small swatches which you can color select from by alt + clicking the swatches while you are in brush mode. I’ll provide an example a little later on.

sturmkim,

Are you planning to work digitally? Nice drawings so far, I assume that you will be painting digitally though.

abeld3dg,

Gorgeous start here, I really look forward to your progress!

zhay13,

Nice work here, especially on the face. Keep up the good work!

claybub,

Were you going to continue working on your original Velazquez piece? Looks to me as though it were going quite well!

I think that’s everyone! If I missed anyone, it wasn’t intentional. Keep up the great work everyone! I am probably not going to be doing a painting for this OFDW due to other projects, but of course I will be following along and watching your guys’ amazing progress! :bounce:

Cheers,

Womball,

Hope this little demo helps you and others get started on your painting ~ the key is to break down the process as simply as possible from the beginning:

The first is to select a range of range of tints and hues of one value, such as brown, to simplify the coloring process. I used the HSB (Hue, Saturation, Brightness) Slider to select five tints/shades of brown, ranging in value from light to dark, to create swatches from which I will select repeatedly in the creation of a painting. From the Color Palette, select HSB Sliders.

Once I have selected and created swatches, which I place on a single layer (you can just paint these swatches quickly, you don’t have to create perfect selection) and call that layer swatches on top of all other layers, and lock it so I don’t accidentally paint on that layer.

The key thing is to fill the entire canvas with a mid tone so that you have an automatic basis / ground from which to build up in your lights and down in your darks.

Continually alt + sample your swatches while in brush mode. Then, work from dark to light to build the tones of your painting.

Use the shortcuts [ and ] to respectively decrease and increase your brushsize.
Use the shortcuts Shift + [ and Shift + ] to respectively soften and harden your brush.

Play with opacity and flow.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,

Some texture as instructed:thumbsup: …first time in doing this so don’t know if this is what you meant or not Rebecca??

#172

Thought the face was a little too dark so brought it back while still trying to keep some texture with Photoshop.

#173

Hey Womanonfire, your painting is looking really good, the color palette looks to good, keep the good work on.
I think that the key for paint details is to use a big canvas, in a big canvas you can manage the small things as a big ones.

Claybub, thanks so much for your comments, yours is looking awesome, excellent color manage, i really like that dwarf.

Mal-1, (the pope) that brush is really interesting, but better is to see that you can control it, Juan de Pareja is my fav. study, amazing job.

Drawmonger, Congratulations for the new baby, and thanks for the pics.

FateBringer, the image is looking cool, my only advise would be, not to draw all the lines, only the needed, but thats all, keep on the good job.

Mazalo, you are the man, gorgeous paint, graet to see your progress.

Rebecca, thanks for your kind words, Im really making a great efford, thanks again.

A bit of work in mine, and added some details.

#174

hi,guys, there is my latest work,i finished it 2 days.i use chunky oil pastel detail airbrush and dry lumpy impasto, given grain about 50% Reduce opacity about 50%,i like traditional painting like oil-painting so i wanna my work close to traditional painting.

#175

and more details!

#176

Wow, this looks fun, im gonna get started tommorow!

#177

Hi again, everyone

All of these workshop pieces are going to look amazing at the end of these four weeks.

thats a really tough composition! Looks like you have a good start!

claybub - tough for me, all right; so much detail

Here’s my latest attempt- doesn’t look like much has been added, but it has. The worst-looking parts are only temporary - I’m sure to paint them over…and over…again until I get them looking better.

#178

THANK YOU…Rebecca…still working on it, and still enjoying it…

 DrawMonger…HEY…been a while…CONGRATULATIONS ON THE NEW ADDITION…:bounce:

THANKS for those prepratory skeches on the FLAMEING JUNE painting…will help alot for sure.

Miss seeing your work here, but can understand the reasons for it’s absense…So when do we
get to see a painting of your baby…hint hint…

TAKE CARE AS ALWAYS …
Glenn

I cannot post today. The picture I took last night is well over 13 MB and will not upload to image shack. I do not know how it was saved so large. I will have to try tomorrow. Everyone is doing such a great job and it is so diversed.

Rebeccak
Thanks, I’ll see what I can do with that eye and narrow the face a bit but It may just be that my values are off. I was planning on transfering it to ART Board 9x12 thinking the smaller the less time but now I’m thinking it will be hard to get al the details in at that size.
so I have canvas 16x20 and 18x24 not sure which I’ll go with.

DigitalSol
thanks for the compliment and advise, much appreciated. Yours is looking great! Really like the texture of the skin…taking notes

YMS
