I think I’ve had enough with Mr Velasques…I can’t seem to get the likeness right on any of paintings, I think I may need to take a break, and get revitalized. Anyway I’m calling it a day with Velasque…these mastercopies have driven me nuts!!!
Open Figure Drawing Workshop - Hals, Waterhouse, Velazquez, and Leighton - 018
Mark,
Lol, it’s often necessary to take a break and come back to these, or any work, as you know.
Don’t worry, there is plenty of time left in this Workshop (3 whole weeks) and so there is time enough to leave the piece for a week and come back to it.
I think most art dictates it’s own pace, more so than we do.
Cheers,
~Rebeccak

Spirit - I was wondering, howcome your paintings are so blurry at first. Is that just roughing it in? It looks great so far. I am working on the same one. I decided to use watercolor on it since the cloth is transparent. Kinda like water!
Hello everyone, after some days of vacations Im back, this thread is full with wonderfull pics, congrats to everyone, here is some work for mine
C&C are always welcome
Thanks for your very gracious comments guys.
Mazolo: Im very impressed with your peice. I would have trouble with what to do next,
Mal-1: I don’t know why you are frustrated it seems to be coming along quite well for just a couple days work.
Anyone doing the Waterhouse: I love that peice but I couldn’t do it because it gives me the shivers. Those nymphs are like sirens, they could do anything they want. It’s an amazing peice.
Ive still got alot of work ahead of me.

xiannc, you are doing a great work on the paint, most in the cloths drappled, great work. ![]()
Hi again, All
Lots of impressive work being done in this workshop! :)
An update to my efforts: (still in a very roughed out stage...)

@YMS.
Your copy is looking pretty good, it already haves some good level of detail, do you have plans for colorize it?
My update for mine :wip:
Hey, Enrique
Yes, when it is more finished, I plan on colouring it. I’m using PS so might try what you do with the colour layers in your tutorial or else just paint the colours on, or maybe a combination. I haven’t tried colouring the greyscale before so will have to see what will work.
Your update is getting there…very good work as usual
I knew that if I stayed away for even a couple of days I’d have real trouble keeping up with people’s posts. Still, I can’t help leaving a few comments!
mazalo: This is coming along brilliantly, and it’s pretty amazing for such a crowded piece. How large is your canvas, by the way?
Llynna: The coloured pencil suits this work wonderfully, and you’ve got done a very nice job with the folds. Hope to see an update soon.
sturmkim: I really liked your ball-point pen studies.
Corvax: good job there, I think it’s coming along quite smoothly.
hiiri: ah, I see. Very nice work so far, too. The textures give it a real canvas-like look.
Not been very well this week, so I’ve been working at the rate of a slug: barely a few minutes each day. I feel as though I’m blind – cannot see the forms to save my life!
Today was somewhat better, and I made a little progress:

YMS.
thanks so much, can’t wait to see your next update.:bounce:
Eilidh.
Wow, is just fantastic to see someone working in traditionals soo good, amazing job there:applause:
Update for mine.
Critics and comments are always welcome
i don’t pretend to know what the real colors of this painting are… actually, i did see it in person once and as i recall it it was much more vibrant than in the reference got from artrenewal. so i opened my catalog from the show and made a scan. probably somewhere in between is the true color. but anyway i am painting from this and you can too if you like: download it here
i worked on her for about 5 hours today:
here’s a detail:
i am seeking advice on how to make this painting better. if you can give me some tips/critique it is much appreciated. My biggest problem with painting in photoshop is making things really detailed. whats the secret there?
Womanonfire: I’d say you’re doing very well! my only crit so far is that the face looks a bit “harsh” but thats probably just me. Also the reflected light under her chin is much more soft in the painting I think. You’re doing an awesome job, keep up the good work!!
Digitalsol: saweet! your proportions look perfect to me! i couldnt get them myself but you sir, are doing an excellent job
eilidh: Dude! thats awesome!
YMS:  thats a really tough composition! Looks like you have a good start!
xiannc: Wowza!
Mal-1: Those face studies look awesome to me! Your painting style is really cool. I wish i could do that
Mazalo: No words!
Heres what i have so far! I Think there might be some more details to add but i cant tell lol.

I couldn’t let sleeping dogs lie…and so gave it another go, a little happier with this one, but not totally…but then again who is with their work???
Thanks Claybub, you are doing a magnificent job with that little guy…I would have torn my hair out by this stage.
Hi All, I would have loved to participate in this one but a new baby is keeping me joyfully distracted from the computer
I’ve got an OLD book of drawings from Leighton published just after he died…in it are some studies in preparation for his Flaming June painting (see below, the link is to a 2MB zip with the full size scans). ENJOY!!

Hi everyone, I’ve had some major work issues come up that I had to fix before my travel. I almost had to hypnotize myself not to look at this thread. There has not been any update at all from me but I can see lots of wonderful things happening here.
Drawmonger, congratulations on the baybee! And a heartfelt thank you for the flaming june studies.
hi womanonfire,
thanks for the reference, now I see a second pig behind the chair.
I think I can go on tommorrow.
You have to study the brushes and you have to put the resolution of the pic higher. Here are some Tuts painting in Photoshop, but your painting is very good, Im working still on the face, its very hard, only to find realistic colours. I choose this picture because of all the little details, and now I know, Waterhouse was a really master.
