todays update

#102

enrique, how on earth… did you take your laptop/notebook with you?

someone mentioned using a grid as cheating: I strongly object to that view. It’s a basic and classical traditional method for getting proportions right, as far as I know.

nothing wrong with that… differing views anyone?

#103

This is the image I planned on using… proof that great minds think alike!

#104

For simpler images, I usually dont grid things out as I tend to work quicker without it. But Ive used gridding in the past and I dont see it as cheating at all. It helps tremendously when working with complicated images, especially ones with multiple subjects. Its a great tool to help you gauge placement but in the end, youre still drawing/painting the foundation for your study. I’m for it

mazalo,

Starting to come together! I hope you have seen the added detail Reference pictures for this piece added to the first post!

Junpei,

LOL, I understand! Take this at your own pace.

FateBringer,

Nice start here! My main recommendation would be to work on the face, and to really refine the drawing before you begin painitng. You might even treat this as the initial drawing where you get all the kinks worked out, and then do a trace of that drawing, and then transfer it to a canvas. It’s much better to have things worked out the best at the drawing phase, especially when working traditionally. Looking forward to your updates!

Christian,

Great start here! Looking forward to seeing this develop.

CoyoteGuy,

Nice color blocking so far!

YMS,

For complex pieces such as this, it’s no surprise that starting straight in on color would be difficult. The masters from whom people are copying did not just start covering their canvases with color, but likely spent long hours refining and perfecting preparatory drawings to be transferred to a canvas. Old Masters like DaVinci created elaborate monochrome underpaintings before adding successive transparent layers of color. Essentially what you are doing with a grayscale version is the equivalent of the underpainting, really combining doing a drawing and the equivalent of an underpainting in one step. Keep up the good work!

Enrique,

Looking incredible!

David,

That’s looking great! I still think there are some proportional problems with the arm, but that can come later. Looking forward to seeing a beautiful finished piece from you!

rubber-chicken,

Nice update! Hopefully you have seen the detail shots as well for your selected image that have been added to the first post of this thread.

Mu,

Lol, in each of these OFDWs, the issue of different approaches and what constitutes ā€˜cheating’ comes up. Frankly I don’t see the problem with using a grid, though I personally haven’t used one.

I wouldn’t myself do the following: color sample from the original image, or trace the original image. Traced imagery is never allowed into CGTalk’s Gallery, but gridded work is fine. Grids and other mechanical aides have been used by artists over the centuries and are fair game, imo.

Mecha,

Lol, great to hear it!

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

Sorry about my delay, now that my course at college is behind me I will start the draft of one of the mastercopies. Photographing my WIP’s and final is ok right? I just like to work on a big sheet, but reduce size from the sheet if needed. This way i might be able to add guidelines, perspective lines, and anything else.

Also, because these paintings are done from Oil, if I were to do mine in watercolour or inks, would I be able to use the paper as the highlights? I have these rediculous questions ever time I enter something like this

#108

here is my progress…

rebeccak: Yes I saw the detail reference, it will be helpful but the colores are not the same so I wont be needing them at this stage…

#109

Looking great everyone! damn lots of people in this one!

Mazalo! looking great , good to see someone take on that peice , and its coming along great.

Update:

The more I work on this the more I see I am way off from the original…don’t know what to do with this, whether to keep going with it or scrap it and try and get a better Likeness, maybe do just a head study…mmmm, I’m in a bit of a quandry??

Good to see everyone’s updates!

zhay13,

Great to see you back! Nice start here, but I have one request ~ do you mind limiting the size of posts to 800 pixels wide maximum? That way no one has to scroll to see your image.

Keep up the good work everyone!

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

#116

well heres my update. how does it look so far? anything i can improve on?

#117

Wow! You guys work fast! I’m still roughing out the layout. :frowning: Been busy with other things as well, so progress will probably be slow. I’m roughing out the dwarf in GIMP. It does seem touch sensitive. I’m going to focus on proportions, placement and negative space. Hopefully I will have something posted by tomorrow.

#118

That looks really good claybub. Im not looking at the origional right now, so I can’t really spot anything specific you should work on. Its a great start.

Here’s my wip for the night. The way he makes those folds is amazing. There sure are alot of them.
