My finished copy of the Velazquez.

Well I think I’m finished this guy! when i get home I’ll check to see if the contrast sucks, I’m not sure how it looks on other screens.

Rebeccak: yeah I’ll finish the first portrait ![]()
everyones doing an excellent job!
Well as most of you know this has been driving me nuts for some time, just couldn’t click with these studies, then after Zhuzhu showed me a cool brush in Painter and Rebecca talked about Textures, things started to fall into place…
This took about 3hrs, and I feel it is one of my stronger pieces to date, there are a couple of development pics in my anatomy thread.
Again thanks to everyone who has helped me with this.![]()
wow this thread is going so fast and there are so many great ‘reproductions’ in here…
I feel a bit ashamed to post :hmm:
well…at least I worked a bit on it. small update though

mal-1 : that last one is very good!
claybub: awesome!
Hi everyone, my names Justin Beckett, im 19 years old. Trying to self teach myself. Never post on these forums much, unless i have a piece i really think is worth posting, as there is so much great talent here. This thread caught my attention, i love old master works. There absolutely breathtaking. Lovely work by everyone.
Here is my attempt, im still working on it, but this is as far as i have got so far.
C & C welcome.

Hi…Warhead82 // Justin…![]()
REALLY LIKE that emotion you captured in his face…THE EYES SPEAK…BEAUTIFUL JOB…:applause:
Be sure to save a version of this stage of your painting…something very special in that face
at this stage of your painting, you don’t want to lose it…
TAKE CARE
Glenn
Ok think this is done…I know it could be tidier around some areas, but quite like the painterly quality about this one, and feel I have got the face a lot closer than the others.
SpiritDreamer: Thank you so much, such kind comments
Yeah, i think the face is pretty much done, just need to work on the clothes/hand/background now.
Mal-1: That looks quite nice my friend. Good work.
JB.

Hi everyone,
It’s great to see the amazing work here…I’ll be back in a bit to comment on everyone’s. Keep up the great work! ![]()
Cheers,

Some more work on Innocent X. I’m pretty much done (phew) with the upper garment. I wasn’t so dilligent with measuring after a certain point, so the right/bottom side is less accurate (the bottom part is actually quite messed up: I think I’d better make some corrections before I start deepening the shading). I have so far worked exclusively with an HB pencil, but will soon add in softer ones. I’ve avoided them so far so as to have minimal smudging in areas I want to keep crisp.
Rebbeca, thanks for the pointer. I had already started in a much more haphazard way, so I couldn’t implement botched’s approach. It gave me some clues, though, and along with some more tips from Diane at the WIP forum, I gradually switched to a smooth crosshatch technique I think I am relatively pleased with. Of course, any extra feedback and suggestions is more than welcome.
Mal, wonderful progress, really. The painted Pope looks very, very good. You’ve got his expression spot on, and I like your loose rendering a lot. Your second dwarf take on is simply brilliant, too.
Warhead82: Justin!! It’s good to see you here!
Very nice start you’ve got here, the face in particular. Each time I see your work you’ve taken it several steps further. Keep it up!
