Open Figure Drawing Workshop - Angels & Devils - 021

Great to see everyone’s starts, chipmasque, love the concept update!

Welcome to all the new people, and please don’t feel that you have to be at a certain ‘level’ to post your work here. The entire point of the Workshop is to help everyone to improve. It’s all about sweat equity - the harder you work, the better your work will become. Many people including myself esp. have improved a lot through these Workshops - as proof, take a look at this thread, which really inspires me:

Before and After - Post Examples of Your Improvement!

Also it’s always great to see the regulars back for more!

Here’s an update to my Rubens sketch - I may start the digital painting from here:

[left]By the way, please make sure to subscribe to this thread so that when the plug goes off the front page, you can find it again.

Cheers and keep pushing yourselves everyone!

Yay! New OFDW! This one I will participate in. Great choice of topic. I haven’t picked my reference yet (connection is being buggy), but I think I will focus on a few real media copies before trying digital.

I’m enjoying the pieces I’ve seen so far. Good luck and can’t wait to see the finished pieces. Hopefully mine will be one of them!

not much of a progress yet…didn´t have much time…

I was trying to block in some colors and shapes…just a beginning, so that i find a place to start

The first image of this type…ok…the first image i draw, that has characters in it…so…let´s see, where it ends

#104

very basic hue & tone structure laid in, trying to keep Giordano’s palette as a guide, determining who’s on what team, extending figures where they’r lost in the original’s shadow. perspective with a slightly slanted horizon established, stadium and BG cloud structure suggested. time soon to rez up an start getting serious. btw, the floating spheres are the “box seats”, in lieu of L.G.'s angels.

chipmasque, I am extremely excited to see where your painting progresses to! It’s such a neat idea! Are those clouds behind him that are subtly mimicking the wings of the original piece? If so, that’s just awesome!!:thumbsup:

#107

thank you, Patches. yes, i’m trying to keep as much of the master’s image in as possible, but sometimes it means abstracting the visual effect and sort of reincarnating it. thanks for noticing!

#108

Man everyones starting off really really well, this is my first OFD but and its great fun to watch everyones progress, I wish Id of participated in the previous ones.

#109

Just a quick sketch for now… still have a few ideas rolling around in my head. I’ll post some more tonight - J

Sirielle - You dont have copy a master image down to every single detail. The point is to try and copy it to see how closely you can match it. You are more than welcome to change aspects of a master copy to suite your needs, however, please be sure that your final image follows to the workshop theme accordingly. If youre unsure what is safe ro unsafe, re-read the guidelines carefully. - J

Thank you for the answer, I’ll try to stay as close to the original as I can

I’m going to do number four, " The Guardian Angel with Sts Anthony of Padua and Gaetano Thiene". As I said, I’ll do traditional media first, then work on digital. Expect some stuff within the next 24 hours.

#113

2nd update. I’m not keeping track of time, since this is a spare time kinda project.

I’m happier with the composition now, but I feel like her head might be too small. Any thoughts?

Eduart- I really like your technique. nice.

#114

finished for the night. rezzed to 1260x1920, paint, paint, paint. images are at 25%, 50%, and 100% of file size. let me know if i’m posting too many details.

#115

Chipmasque - Very nice work indeed! How are you going to incorporate the “Angels and Devils” theme into your piece?

#116

Mercuralis - Looking great! I 'm looking at the girls head and it looks proportional to me.

#117

Ok, jumping into this one as well.

I will paint this on canvas. Image can be viewed any way. The two figures are flying.
The background will illustrate this once I finish it.

Here is another view.

#118

I have no words.

EDIT: Hehe…open copulation…intriguing, but probably not appropriate for the forum.

#119

thanks, MHC. teams names will appear on the main figures: Devils in blue, Angels in ochre, though i may elaborate the names a bit, like maybe Blue Devils, Golden Angels. the guy on top is performing the “Giordano Gambit,” the only sports play known to have been inspired by a 17th century painting

that’s also the tentative title of the pic.
