Open Figure Drawing Workshop - Angels & Devils - 021

#81

Hello! Fantastic works, people

That’s the first time I take a part in workshops, I hope I can keep a pace to you.

I haven’t chosen my theme, yet, I believe I should try a master copy since I have problems with proportions and perspective, also with copying itself, so I would learn more that way. Though for a start a concept I of an idea I had last night.

Actually the angel should be falling into darkness and visible from more narrow angle, from the bottom. The hands appeared on their own and didn’t want to fade away…
I’ll sketch it again and try to paint it after the workshops

Sirelle I like that, very interesting concept
Heres another small update from tonight, I think ill cut down on the frequent updates :stuck_out_tongue: and post more progressive stages after this.

Edit:
Heres a closeup of the head also

Well since my tablet’s not the best at home, I thought I’d give this a try traditionally - lots more work to do:

EDIT: Fubarred the hand a bit, but will fix that in the digital stage:

Edit: A sketch from the Rubens piece:

I am starting to participate with by first stage WIP image. I am considering to make some minor changes on the colours and the forms. I also congratulate to the others for their great start.

I’m just trying to decide between 3 masterpieces, basing on which I like most (not working), what elements there I want to practice (well, that’s better) and finally - what elements I can’t see there. What I mean - I’ve got a light monitor, so it’s not the case here - I don’t see some parts of the painting, they are too dark out of time or artist didn’t paint them. Things like demon’s face details or what is happening with his legs here for example. The question is - does the master copy has to be the same dot in dot with the original or am I allowed to change it a bit? Intentionally, I don’t speak now of some unwanted changes which will appear in the process, I’ll try to fix them with your help. Apart stating what’s going on with the example leg I was thinking also on changing faces or some details, though I’m not sure if it will not ba a blasphemy to the original.

Also - I don’t need to mimic the ageing of the original I hope? Cracks, fading etc.

Sorry if these are silly questions, but I’m a newbe here

Ok - I admit it I am a notorious (well at least in my own mind ) ) for starting but not finishing these wonderful workshops

I am determined that this workshop will be different (blah, blah, blah)

Mdogger Nice start. Good color. I like the brushes you’re using. Is this Painter?
Intervain Humble beginnings, perhaps, but great piece already glimpsed in this one. But all your pieces are awesome. Can’t wait.
kboss This is a nice choice to paint. Same, here. started one to try my Painter skills, except, I’ll be using both programs as I go. Let’s se how we fare.
Hey sirielle Welcome. It’s all about learning and teaching what we’ve learned.
These workshops are full of wonderful people that support every effort made. I’ve been inspired by many in these workshops.
Rebbeca Your fluidity continues to blow me away.
sablebrush The face of the girl has a nice simple style to it. This looks like it will turn out nicely.
Gord-MacDonald We have the same Master work as subject. Nice block in.
I bet you will finish this one.
nimal This is the place to practice. I’ve experienced tremendous motivation and support here. Participatiing pushes me to the next level of skills, I’m sure you will succeed quite well. As soon as i have my basic color in, I’ll post my WIP.

wow…very nice workshop.

I donĀ“t think, that my drawing skills are anywhere near to good…but i would say, if i donĀ“t start and practise, they canĀ“t get any better.

I will try to do a master copy of

CHOICE 10:
Bouguereau, William
A Soul Carried To Heaven
1878

I like it a lot…and think, that this matches my skills best (donĀ“t know why…just a feeling)

I hope, that i can come up with something good…

whoah, i’m gonna have to book to catch up! great work getting started here. in particular:

vincent1, it’s great to see how you work from broader to more defined over the entire piece, i need to take a lesson there.
mdogger, i envy the energy of your brushwork.
AztecFireFlower – really anticipating your satyrs, i was impressed with your last piece in OFDW20

i’m planning a synthesis of master copy and original. L. Giordano’s Fall of the Rebel Angels reminded me very much of a sketch i did about 30+ years ago depicting a zero-gravity sport:

so i’ll be reinterpreting the image in the same vein, teams being Devils and Angels, of course. so far all i’ve done is blocked the action in and barely indicated a few reinterpretations of the elements. i used a loose grid to keep things reasonably accurate.

this is the current size of the image, and after i decide where the BG is going (leaning toward a domed stadium with Giordano’s clouds filling the sky, their color being so Mars-like to my eye) and block in the basic tones and hues, i’ll probably up the rez before proceeding to finish.

The strart of my OFD #21
Not sure where I am going with this. Just going with it. Going to keep it unpredictable.
Face created from imagination - no references used.
Will add to the composition as I go along.

Great job so far everyone. Looking forward to seeing everyone’s progress.

Take care
Glenn
