Open Figure Drawing Workshop 019 - The Awakening of the Underground Giant

#81

So I had this new idea, I really dig it.

Annubis was trapped by magicians into a painting 1000s of years ago. A secret society recently found the painting and moved the wall to their underground facility. The power of magic has awakened the sleeping Annubis, arise Annubis and rule the world once again.

I did not save works in progress sorry. I did the sketch in photoshop, painting the backround room in Painter X, then painted the characters and lamps and such in photoshop cs.

critques are welcomed.

to better appriciate it, turn the brightness down until the backround is rather dark.

just an update.

daniel, I am really liking your idea, it is coming along nice. I like your style in general, this piece has a sort of comic book cover feel, lots of dark.

She sort of reminds me of medusa. So she came out of the city ground, and parts of the buildings and street is on her head right?

not yet colored only sketch for 4-5 mnts during my breaktime (office)

#85

nards cool cyclops, but why would he be carying a tree as he is just waking up?

#86

nards26 - great sketch

architectus - Thanks. Yeah, you’re right, the stuff on her/his head consist of urban artifacts, such as pieces of sidewalk, lamp posts, trees, etc. These pieces will, hopefully, be more distinct and detailed as I progress with the painting. Thanks again, Architectus.

Sorry it has taken me so long to post a pose for my giant, but I’ve finally come up with something and maybe I could get a little of everyones opinion on what I should do before I go into the detail.

[QUOTE=danielh68]nards26 - great sketch :slight_smile:

danielh68 - thanks man

Danielh68 I really like the textures in your scene, but I would have to say that my favorite part would have to be the people falling off the debris on your giants head.

I think that the people are nicely placed on the giant but how the light post is still lit, the world may never know. Althought I don’t even no if that little detail matters because I enjoy the lighting on the falling persons back.

Here is my concept in its entirety.

ApEx_V,

Welcome. My suggestion would be to look at real reference for the face and body, a good free resource for free artistic male nude reference is here:

http://justmeina.deviantart.com/gallery/

This is a free / copyright free / excellent source for reference.

As you’ve sketched your concept it may now be wise to begin to define the details by looking at available reference. You may, for example, shoot a photo of your face in the same position so that you can have something from which to work for the specific expression.

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

A great reference resource I forgot to link in the beginning post is:

Male nude artistic reference / free / copyright free:

Ben is a great model, and has generously allowed us to use his reference photos for previous OFDWs.

I’ve posted this link to the first post as well.

Another thing I recommend is for people to think in terms of unusual angles, not just face on or centering the subject, etc. One good way to plan your compositions is to just draw fast, directional lines on a page to really get the movement going in a comp.

Don’t think about details initially ~ just let your ideas flow through gestural sketches. Then later you can shoot reference and work from available reference sources such as I have posted to the beginning of this thread.

Let’s see a bigger variety of sketches ~ I think many of you may be arriving too soon at a final comp, when the best thing is to create a lot of dynamic sketches, choose the best one, and refine it.

thnks for the tips  … ill have a bit of a play with my camera tonight and get the expression … im gonna model a basic body and paint over it for my final comp… ill do a few othr sketches but i think ill stick with this one FTW as im so strapped for time i have a clear vision of how i want this one to look. right back into it!

ApEx_V - I hope you don’t mind, but I did a rough paint-over to illustrate a few points:

  1. In terms of lighting, try and think of the figure in planes. Notice the geometric nature of the head below. Once you establish some angularity to the face, it becomes easier to find the proper areas where light will hit. Afterwards, you can smooth some of the rounder areas of the form, such as the cheek and forehead.

  2. Establish asymetry in you compositions. Notice how the head is lower than the elbow. It creates an appealing flow as opposed to having everything on the same horizontal plane.

  3. Add some trees, birds, people, whatever for scale…let us know this thing is big!

I have a few more insights, but I’m late for work…gotta go. I hope this helps. Thanks.

ApEx_V,

Sounds good.

danielh68,

Some great tips!

One thing I would have to say however is that in the cases of paintovers, please always ask first before doing one for a particular artist. While ApEx_V may not mind, some artists are sensitive to having their work painted over, and I try to always request to see if the artist would like to have a paintover done before doing one.
