OFDW 019: Monday, August 21 - Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

That’s next tuesday OMG lol

Well, I had a long struggle today to give my Deimos character a more dynamic pose…
2 done, 5 to go before I can start painting… Think I’ll have to ask my boss for a week off and work 24hrs a day if I want to finish this in time eheh

architectus will your giant be holding something in his hands?
MechaHateChimp that’s coming along nicely! any idea about a background? Maybe some additional light source from the back would increase the drama and make the silhouet of your giant more present (unless that is exactly what you want to avoid  )

#303

hi
got a little break from the giant this week:-)
I’d tend to call this finished, but there’s always something to improve…so I won’t
It might be nice to add a few birds or st-but I wouldn’t want to distract the viewer and fill the image with too much small detail ( I probably did already)

MechaHateChimp: I like yours - reminds me of the works of ElGreco (colors and tall figures).

Knedlo: hey man, can’t wait to see them lights up and shining;-)

Frejasphere: nice dynamics. looks like she got awakened in a really unpleasant way too:)

Architectus: giantsome (:-)), dynamic - great job!

Rebeccak: thanks again for advice - this workshop is just awesome:thumbsup:

Hi Rebecca, thanks for the comments. They were very useful and, as result, enhanced the composition. First, I extende the canvas to the right, thus moving the giant’s head left of center. With the extra real estate on the right, I expanded the story line and depth by including two characters in the near foreground. I like the adjustments and will spend whatever time available just to polish it. Thanks, again

#305

danielh68,

You’re welcome!

I really like the adjustment, and think that the addition of the two characters adds a much more expansive sense of depth. One thing you might consider is making the figures a bit larger / and have them running at a more frantic pace or nearly jumping out of the frame. I’d think they would be much more frenzied at the sight of such a monster clinging to the side of the bridge.

Do you plan to render this further, or keep your piece as a sketch? I am really liking the direction, and look forward to your update.

More comments soon…

Cheers,

-Rebeccak

Daniel that piece is absolutely awe-inspiring. It’s extremely well done and I simply love your style. I think that it would look really awesome though if the two foreground characters were frantically running away–with the girl stumbling over–bent forward with a few small rocks rolling away. Also, since they appear to be in a tunnel of some sort (correct me if I’m wrong) perhaps they should be a lot darker with greenish outline almost from the outside light and then just a bare glow from some small light sources in the tunnel. I may just be crazy but the people in the painting just seem like they’re walking, not running. Once again, spectacular piece, excellent composition, great colors, and a very much horrifying giant. I love the small purple accents which really bring out the green.

#307

UrbanKunoichi & Rebeccak, Thanks

I made the couple a little bit more dynamic which looks much better than the previous version. I could push it further, but a comic book style of action would not be fitting for the piece. At least, in my mind. I kind of like the fact that she’s awkwardly climbing up the rubble while looking at the terror behind her. In any case, your suggestions are really valuable and I think the piece has benefitted from it. Now, hopefully, I can find time over the weekend to polish it up

#308

daniel right on man, fantastic work. To me the style is a comic book cover, so totally exagerating characters would fit the style in my oppenion, however I like how it is right now. The girl in the red dress might have a curious personality, and the guy could care less and is trying to get then out of there.

Although, the characters add color to the painting, maybe try to dull their colors to the same purples and greens in the painting, just to see what it looks like. I take it there is a red light to the the mans left.

excelent work, I look foward to seeing how it turns out. I actually like the way it is right now.

#309

refined hands, I do not want them to detailed. Redid face after looking at some comic books, pitt inspired me to change it up a bit.

I might work on the right side of the ground, maybe add a few bones, or possibably an animal companion of the warrior, a wolf perhaps.

#310

Tried a few things with the colors and the shadows. I liked the previous colors more but I also like the contrast with this version.

I will try to remove the fabrics because I honestly don’t think I have enough time to find references or paint them all before the deadline.

#311

hi all…

…think this is it, I think this is finished…I need to sleep on it and see…what do you think ?

#312

Hi…Mazalo…

Looks FANTASTIC to me…BEAUTIFUL JOB painting it…really like the lighting…DRAMA…:applause:

Hi…Architectus…I did a paintover of your piece…corected arms, hips, leg, center line of figure ect…I like the drama of your piece, easy corections…If you want me to post my paintover
of your piece, let me know …Paintovers are a great way to learn from each other, and are a lot clearer to understand, than words…

PureGhost GR …I did a paintover of yours also…Will post it also …if you want me to…let me know…

NR43,

I like your careful reevaluation of your figures - I think if that is what you get out of this Workshop, then you’ve gotten a lot which you can use in this and future pieces.

HladekStepan,

Very nice revision! You are most welcome, it has been a pleasure to see your progress. I like the unity you’ve brought to the image with the color / adjustment layer - I would still recommend detailing the grass a bit, and adding a few very selective highlights. A few of the edges around the giant’s wrist are a little sharp - I think if you spend just a bit more time with this, you can really polish it up.

danielh68,

Looks better! I think you might want to make clear what the giant is looking at - if the giant is specifically looking at the fleeing couple or just at the scene in general. Looking forward to seeing your final!

architectus,

I like your revisions, I would say that there are still a few suggestions that I might make for the giant - if you like, I can do a paintover, but of course won’t if you don’t wish me to.

PureGhostGR,

I think this is looking good, what I would suggest is perhaps deepening the overall skintone of the figure a bit so that you have more value range to play with - look at images of lightskinned individuals, you will see that value wise there are areas that are quite dark. I suggest using a broader range of values so that your figure looks more dimensional. Also, I would suggest adding a bit of blue to the mountains to suggest depth and atmospheric perspective - and also to play against the dominant orange hued scheme of your piece.

mazalo,

I think this is looking great - I think if you added a bit of saturated yellow here and there, it might really set off the purple you have in the smoke - perhaps there could be more yellow in the steam of the pit and reflected on the cobblestones, etc. Looking good, I anticipate your final piece.

Great stuff all, I look forward to everyone’s updates!

Cheers,

-Rebeccak

wow so many great works here O:

Hladek, It’s great to see the improvement in your giant! is looking so much better, I love those little sheeps

NR43, your figures look better now that you have defined their shapes.

Architectus, Now that you changed the face of the giant it loos so much more scary.

Danielh, that’s an amazing painting! O:

Mazalo, I’m liking your piece a lot, I think Rebecak is right about the yellows here and there, I think it would add a little bit more of life

PureGhost, The pose is so beautiful, I love the colors of the background, though I liked her more when she had darker skin, that’s just my personal opinion

Well here is my giant, I worked more on the background and added more contrast. (Does it look too dark? I have a very old monitor and the colors sometimes look very different  )

D: Help is always appreciated.

#315

Another Update before finishing  not much time to go - so better get a move on

I changed her arm and added more detail to her face and body… still working on the hair, background and shading of her body, so things keep changing as I go  Hopefully get there in time…

Opps! Rebecca: so sorry I missed your comments - been a mad week and lots of work to finish, so only been popping in very briefly… always appreciate feed-back

Mazalo: Looks great! you’ve done really well with the atmosphere and the scene setting. I like the white light in your giant - very effective! Well done!

Danielh68: I like the way you have your giant just about to pluck the fleeing couple… putting them in the foreground added a lot of drama to the painting and allows the eye to move past the giant. Well done and looking forward to seeing the finished piece.

HladekStepan: Looking good, I don’t believe you have added too many distractions… and even adding a bit more detail isn’t going to take away anything from the painting; possibly just add that sense of refinement. You’ve done really well with this so far!

Talaria, Architectus, PureGhost, shyamshriram, NR43… good work and looking forward to seeing your finished pieces

take care all
a.

Talaria,

Hope this little paintover helps - bear in mind, these are only suggestions. :) The main thing I would recommend is just elongating the legs and also just giving the torso a more overall sense of flow by lengthening the lines of the side that stretches, and contracting / pinching the lines of the side that is being compressed:

I also really recommend looking at Greek / Roman sculpture, for example the Laocoon Group, for examples of figures that exhibit twisting:

For everything we do, there is a precedent. :)

Frejasphere,

I can do a paintover as well if you like tomorrow. :)

Cheers,

Thanks for offer Rebecca

This is another update… see how I go, might be one more today if I have the time…
I notice that as I’m taking photos and trying to correct the angle of the easel with the camera (that’s probably got more to do with me standing in a strange bent way than the camera  ), things look a little different in the pic than on the drawing… and some of the shading looks fainter… will try to take a proper pic when it’s finished.

cheers all and take care
a.

#318

Hi…Architectus…you said it was ok to do paintovers of your work…which is great…
Alot easier to show, than to tell…a picture is worth a thousand words …
This is the way I was taught…by example.
Study the intensity of Boris’s colors, how he brings background colors into the figures, and his use of deep shadows ect.
I did a few corections on your giant figure…the main thing is the peanut shape of the torso and pelvic area is missing in your figure…he is missing the hips, which are the bottom shape of the peanut. I ajusted the arms and the one leg closest to warrior. Corected the center line from pit of neck, to groin…Made area concave on upper stomack muscles, where ribcage protrudes and envelopes the stomach muscles…made hands a little bigger.
Hope this helps some…I like your painting alot…would like to see it taken further…

TAKE CARE

Left is original…right is paintover

#319

thanks for the paint over spirit.

anyone can do paintovers on any of the work I post, it is welcomed.

I decided to do a quick painting, more for practice than anything else. I am going with the other giant, but I thought this would bring a different interpretation to the awaking of the underground giant.

I never really painted anything under water, so I think this is my first real attempt. Reference of a purple octopus used from yahoo images. I changes the shape and over all lighting though.

#320

Thank you everyone for your really helpful feedback. Rebeccak I have tried my best to follow your guidelines and I am grateful for them.
SpiritDreamer I would love to see the paintover you mentioned if you also wish to share it.

Update:

Quite a change from the previous version, I know.

I tried to focus on the art nouveau concept more and cut off the parts that I wouldn’t be able to paint ufor the deadline.
