PureGhostGR, this is developing into a lovely piece...I'll be really interested to see how you render this - lovely effects so far. How you choose to interpret the theme is of course up to you - I think that so long as you create a piece that is satisfying to you in terms of relationship to the theme, you're doing the right thing.

OPB mazalo:

mazalo, it would be nice to see the torso of the giant more refined...and the lighting effect unified and intensified. The background has certainly added a lot! It would be nice to see this pushed to a higher degree of rendering - I look forward to your updates!

OPB architectus:

architectus, I am happy to try another paintover if you wish - there are lots of things I like about this so far, but I think you could really tighten the figure of the giant for more impact. One thing that I think needs to be corrected is the center line of the body, which seems to be a bit off in places. Your speed is great - I’d love to see you finish one of these.

OPB Glenn:

Glenn, I think this is the best resolution for your piece so far; the yellow seems a bit bright / blown out, but I'm starting to like some of the deep blues of the legs and of areas like the hair. I know what you mean about the painting bit, and I think you should leave this one as is. It will be nice to see you do more paintings again, I miss seeing those.

OPB Knedlo:

Knedlo, before offering to do an overpaint, I'd like to suggest that you look at / use reference from justmeina's gallery, whose link is posted to the first link of this thread. There are many great male reference photos there which I think you will find useful.

I'm happy to do overpaints when people get stuck, but right now I think you just need to use reference and refine your figure. I look forward to seeing your update!

OPB HladekStepan:

HladekStepan, your update is really heads above your previous piece - quite a big improvement, that is really great to see. :) I would recommend starting to detail and add shadow where the earth overhangs his head, and details to the grass, etc. A great reference source is pbase photo galleries:

Of course you can't plagiarize imagery, but it certainly helps to get ideas by browsing photo galleries for colors, textures, etc. Looking forward to your update as well.

EDIT: Also, I don’t think you need to make the giant evil. That’s not a requirement. In fact, I find the fact that this sleepy giant is reaching benignly for a tree as a snack to be pretty charming.

EDIT:

imperioli, welcome! Is your piece going to be entirely 3D? Nice start here.

Nice to see everyone's progress here - please keep it up.

 Cheers,

#283

Cleaning things up a bit and refining some of my brush work. Theres still lots more to be done. The gash isnt very convincing so I’ll need to work on that… I may add some kind of light emitting from it. Right now Im just taking my time… I already know more or less what the final image will look like in my head. More updates in the next few days. - J

Glenn,

Did you paint/edit the continents on the globe?
Because I just can’t take my eyes off how you painted/edited the continents on earth - that is so damn beautiful.

Rebeccak
My purpose is to create a portrait of dignitary who lived in lithania : ALBERTAS GOSTAUTAS ( XV a.)
Nothing else is left about him, except one picture:

THANK YOU EVERYONE for the great feedback, support, and encouragement on the
EARTHSPIRIT // SPIRITEARTH painting and concept that I just fininshed…
I hope that I have been of some help to you also, on your journies into the unexplored parts and unknown realms of your imaginations…this last exercise has been a lot of fun for me,
a chance to set my spirit free…and like the homeing pigion, it always comes back to where it came from…SEE YOU ALL ON THE NEXT JOURNY…

Rebecca…LOL…The light from the sun will always burn your retna’s out, if you stare at it too long…:scream: …Don’t give up on me yet,…I still love to paint in the traditional manner…just curious …thats all…

THANKS…MR MU… …Those continents and her hair, were painted using the Liquid Metal
brush in Painter #9…Set the transparency slider almost all the way to the right of scale, and
it is like painting with Liquidfied Glass…:bounce: :scream:

Submitted this painting to the 2D finished section…WAS REJECTED…MUST HAVE BEEN SOMETHING I SAID…LOL…:scream:

TAKE CARE EVERYONE, and THANKS AGAIN…
Glenn

MechaHateChimp :bounce: - love your idea and execution

mazalo - great concept - kinda reminds me of Doctor Who but I’m a geek so don’t mind me  I agree about refining the torso area

Hi All

wonderful giants and giantesses emerging here

Thankyou Rebecca for your awesome crits… time devotion and sheer stamina to keep up with all the work coming through this thread, and on top of that to post helpful, constructive and supportive comments  I had a look at Arctis work; wonderful! so thank you for letting me know.

Glenn: wow! I love your Earthspirit! She’s looking wonderfully peaceful and full of movement and colour at the same time. I really like the ones where you have the moon in the painting… It just seems to add that extra dimension. Well done!!

MechaHateChimp: I like the colours you’re working with - the red tones have a real sense of rage… Will be exciting to see where you go from here

Mazalo: I like the concept you are working with… wondering if the conjurers are pleased or very scared at what they just lured out of the pit (and sorry if you’ve mentioned it before)? The way you’ve thrown his head back seems to be working better (making him less central), and the setting with the background is looking great. looking forward to seeing more.

Architectus: You have certainly been (still are) on a massive journey with this one  The giant’s teeth are looking fearsome enough! Rebecca has already pointed out a few areas that I’m sure will come together for you, so keep it up and enjoy!

HladekStepan: I like your giant… Your style reminds me a bit of Paul Seurat… not in imagery, but more the clean areas and colours. You are right in that he doesn’t look that frightening at the moment… more content. If you did want him more angry-looking; straightening the eye & dropping the angle of the mouth a little… might help achieve that  Keep it up and looking forward to seeing where you take it.

Knedlo: Interesting concept… will be interesting to see where you take it from here, and how your giant and landscape develop as you keep working.

danielh68: Great “Giant” feeling about your setting, the miniscule people and the close-up of his face… I like the colours too and can’t wait to see more!

There are so many great ones here… so even without comments on all: big thumbs up!

After a bunch of sketches, some which were done in the backyard on a windy day (the cyclone manifestation scream, I’ve started working on the actual drawing for my awakening earthmother giantess… as she comes out of the sea morphing into a cyclone… It’s all traditional, so charcoal and graphite at this stage on A2 size thick paper. Rough at this stage… but atleast it’s a start

Cheers all and take care
a.
PS - her top hand actually fits in the drawing, just not in the photo… :scream:

Hello all! Finally back to CGTalk after a silly absence based on a wrist injury and Life-in-general. Coming to the party a little late but I’ll see what I can do…

My first thought when I saw the title was something along the lines of Cthulhu.

"that he but seemeth dead, he sleeps, and yet he does not sleep, he has died and yet he is not dead, asleep and dead though he is, he shall rise again. Again it should be shown that

That is not dead which can eternal lie,
and with strange aeons even death may die."

–H.P. Lovecraft–

As I put on some good adventure music, it took me along the lines of not only Pulp Horror but Pulp Adventure as well. And below is what I came up with…

The adventurers in our story, in simply trying to escape the clutches of the fiendish madman andhis cultists that wanted the crystal our heroine carried, crawl through the darkened catacombs and ancient caves deep underneath the earth. Coming upon a massive room they find an ancient stone statue of something asleep. Or is it a statue…

More to come…

Another update from me:

I would like to redraw the hands and feet with a reference, but I will leave them like that for now.

I can see that there are mistakes in the shading and anatomy of the figure (both in the body and face) but I feel like I have gone too far to go back and randomly try to fix things. I am having second thoughts about the art nouveau outlines with the figure, still I am glad I got this far with this.

The more I look at this, the more I realise the need to work with shadows (and to start building from dark to light instead of the opposite while painting). I will work on making the 'rising out of the mountains' part more obvious now.

Paintovers and pointers on what to fix would be great and highly appreciated.

Hi again

HladekStepan: Hi man, I’m also glad that there are two of us from our small country. Thanks for compliment, but more than in my sense of detail it is in photoshop’s zooming capability. Actually I’m new too so please feel free to criticise my work (and I think that no one will be angry with you making polite suggestions on their pieces, because the more critique the better.) As I wrote in my first post here this is actualy the first painting I’m trying to make (well to be honest five years ago, back at elementary, we have art classes, so it is a little lie  ), but, for about half-year I am eagerly consuming every artistic tutorial I encounter, so I can only recomend this to you, because before that half-year I wasn’t able to draw/paint anything. All the people here at CGTalk are so polite, nice and willing to help and this place is stuffed by valuable resources so that if you want you can became an excelent artist here. Just needs a strong will. And for your painting I like those clear gradients of color especialy on the skies. I also think you don’t need to make your giant evil. I see him more like clumsy, good hearted old fella, little dizzy after a long sleep. But it is up to you what he’ll became. Good work so far.

Architectus: Thanks a lot for your time. I’ve corrected his shin (?) and also moved his arm little towards your suggested position, but not all the way because I want his arms to be spread as far as it is possible to strenghten his superior position. The head is redone completely. So thanks again and good luck with yours

SpiritDreamer: Well done:thumbsup:. Very dreamy.

Imperioli: Hi, curious what it will turn to.

Rebeccak: Yeah you are right. I just want it checked if it is OK so far. I’ve actualy used some bodybuilders photo from http://foto.kulturistika.net/index.php?cat=2&lang=english. Maybe i will be in need of your help tomorow, because I was trying to draw his left hand whole day without even a tiny succes. I’m going to borrow a digital camera from friend to take my hand as reference, but if that won’t help… it will be your tur. Thanks anyway.

hauntedminds: Very well, but i must admit i liked the previous peacefull version more. Hey I just figured out he looks like a friend of mine.

MechaHateChimp: Very good, I think the light would be exciting. Eager to see.

Frejasphere: Thanks. And good work. Hope to see you in another worskhop. Hold on:thumbsup:

CoyoteGuy: Hi, looking forward to see it in colors.

PureGhostGR: Nicely smooth. I see the problem in all the limbs are to much cilinder-like, with actualy no muscles on them. I know it is a gentle godess and not any kind of muscular warrior but even the gentlest beauties has more shapes on them. I don’t think you have gone too far ( well in my beginer’s enthusiasm with photoshop, i think there is nothing like too far with it’s 100% ereaseability) and you know, it is about learning here, so my suggestion is you could try to add more shapes on her. Anyway it turning out very nice, so don’t give up.

And well for me. I’ve started to adding color, and I have to disappoint all those who wanted them bright and lot. I have chosen a simple scheme. I want to introduce a lot of those lights in the city and also I’m playing with idea to make the giant’s crystal hairs and beard a light source too. I will see. So here it comes

Have fun, everyone!
Sorry for those long senteces ( surely with a lot of mistakes in them) it is my bad habbit from czech.

#292

Playing with layout a little. I extended the canvas a bit I added the swords on the foreground character. Added a sickle instead of a whip to the giant for the time being… Im still debating whether to keep it or experiment with something else. Forground character detailing is next.

#293

Joel!

I haven’t commented much on yours, I hope you don’t mind if I give a few constructive crits. I think that the demon’s left arm still looks stiff / a bit unnatural. The upper arm seems too small / short for the size of the torso, which has a heroic aspect. The head seems small and the neck a bit large I think. I would suggest scaling the head larger and just seeing what looks right. I still think that enlarging the canvas, if only to give you the work area to work out the full figures would be really helpful, even if you don’t include the full figures in the final composition. To really determine the balance of the figures and the full gestural motion, I think that sketching at least the ghost of the full figures would be really useful for making the spatial relationships work. Also I think giving more room to the top of the canvas will allow the figure of the giant to breathe.

Just some suggestions, and my 2 cents.

Back later with more comments…

Cheers,

-Rebecca

#294

Hi Becca,

Thanks for the crits!
Ive messed around with the proportions of the head as you suggested a but Im pretty happy with where its at right now. The left arm definitely needs work and I’ll be working on correcting it along with other parts of the image as I get to them. Im just working on little bits here and there and just taking my time… It still needs alot of work but I think things will start to pull together as I get closer to finishing the final image.

#295

Here is an update. I changed the horns, abs, eyes, and a few other things I fixed, and updated the rocks.

#296

Spirit - I am really digging your giant. That is amazing with the liquid glass paint. Makes me want to do more experimenting.

Ghost - I like the direction you took yours. Very flowing, not over powering and dark. I assume you are going to place planets and stars in it?

Maz - I like the way you depicted some cultures worships. I think you have really have defined the theme Reb asked for. Good job.

#297

Hi…Everyone…
You might get some inspiration for scale, motion, imagination,…ect. by checking out this site.
Will give you a different perpective on the way this giant concept can be handled and created.

#299

holy shit, glenn… thanks a lot for this pointer… wonderful artist!

#300

architectus,

I think things look better - I would still say that the area that needs the most work are the arms and hands. What do you think?

Frejasphere,

Hey there, I like this update - and am happy to point out a few areas with an overpaint if you would like.

Cheers,

-Rebeccak
