Open Figure Drawing Workshop 019 - The Awakening of the Underground Giant

    OFDW 019: Monday, August 21 - Tuesday, September 12th, 2006
Welcome to the NINETEENTH thread of the Open Figure Drawing Workshop!!!
This workshop is open to any medium and any style. Some informal moderation
will be gladly provided by Rebecca Kimmel ~ however, the purpose of the
Workshop is for Artists to interact with and informally critique one another’s work.
For this OFDW, we are trying something new - a themed Workshop in which the topic is:
"The Awakening of the Underground Giant".
    Guidelines for OFDW 019:
    1. The theme is "The Awakening of the Underground Giant".
    2. You have 1 MONTH in which to create a finished traditional or digital, drawing or painting, sculpture or 3D model and / or image based on this theme.
    3. You may broadly interpret the word "Giant". A giant may be female or male, human or creature, young or old. The Giant, however, must be a living organism and not something inorganic. The goal is to practice one's skills in Anatomy and Figurative Art in a broadly interpreted manner.
  1. You must place your interpretation of a Giant within an environment that tells a story.

  2. While not required, it is suggested that you post concept sketches as well as WIP of your stages of work. WIP is strongly encouraged in the OFDWs!

  3. The emphasis here is on storytelling. Set your figure in an environment, and think about your story first before sketching out your elements.

  4. Please note that FINISHED WORK ONLY will be SPOTLIGHTED!

Note: This Workshop will last 4 weeks.
                 Reference Sources:

Please note that Reference may be used, but it is strongly encouraged that you interpret the reference which you use. You may use any reference that you wish, including your own photos, uncopyrighted reference, and photos from:
     > Photosets

Also, see this thread for Reference, though many sources bear copyright:

    RULES FOR THE THREADS
    1. Work created here MUST be TASTEFUL, SINCERE, RESPECTFUL, and for the purpose of serious study of figurative art. Those who post silly, disrespectful, or tasteless work will have their posts deleted immediately and will no longer be allowed to post on this thread. Rebecca Kimmel reserves the right to determine which pieces are considered to be in poor taste and / or disrespectful in the OFDWs.
                                     2. This Workshop will run for 1 MONTH.
                                     3. There is NO LIMIT to the NUMBER of posts an artist may make. However, we ask that you post only your BEST WORK, even if it is considered unfinished.
                                     4. Artists who post comments and critiques of other artists' work on this thread must be RESPECTFUL, POLITE, and offer CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM. Flaming will be NOT be tolerated, and constitutes dismissal from this and other threads.
                                     5. I will be offering the occasional comments / critique ~ however, the main focus of the Open Figure Drawing Workshop threads should be on Group Critique and interaction. :)
                                     6. ANY MEDIUM or STYLE may be used: Traditional or Digital Drawing or Painting, Sculpture, or 3D Model / Render.
                                     7. Please limit the SIZE of your POSTS to 800 pixels WIDTH x Appropriate pixel LENGTH. No huge posts, please!
                                     8. Have fun, enjoy, and create great art! :)

Must put thinking cap on for this one. Welcome back everyone

I’m afraid you’ll have me tagging along for this one as well. Should be fun!

The topic I voted for got picked as well, yay!

Good luck to all who enter!

Here we go…

I don’t think that i am ready for this, still have lot to learn about 2d but i will definetly keep an eye on this thread…

It would be wonderfull…

Can’t wait to see what Becca will draw

Love your drawings girl

So Good luck to you 2d guys :bounce:

Welcome back everyone! And welcome to the newcomers.

You can do a 3D model as well. The OFDWs are open to all mediums and styles, both 2D and 3D.

Greetings, all!

This sounds like a lot of fun! Hopefuly, “real” work won’t get in the way too much this time (missed out on OFDW 18).

This looks promising! Expect to see some stuff from me, too. ^^ Oh, and hello, everybody!

Sweet! awesome theme too, I love it!!! I’ll try my best to participate.

One question though, may I use a mixture of 3d and 2d for one composition? the reason I ask is i prefer to sculpt figures with zbrush. SO much fun  Id probably end up doing a paintover of the figure for the lighting and texturing. It might aid me with perspective as well. any objections? I always wanted to do a 3d/2d composition

edit: oops im dumb, it says its open to any medium.

I’m first!

okay, okay,…I secretly sketched this way before the workshop started…

I seriously don’t know if I will try and follow this concept, because the memory of my Challenge nightmare still haunts me, but well… I had to post it at least…

oh i need motivation , and i love this

Claybub, lol, no worries! You are welcome to mix and match media at will.

Great first sketch! Would love to see more concepts like this!

Welcome! Hope to see your work here soon.

hi all. im new to these mini challenges and havent post any work in these…i need some information…i subscribed for the notification but dont know how and where to submit my work.also how should i post my wip?? should i post them all here?
i will appreatiate your help.

Yes, you should post all your WIP and finished work here. At the end of the Workshop, I will collect and post all finished work to a single wrap up thread, and then post the best work from the forum to the SPOTLIGHT Forum.

You can take a peek at previous OFDWs to get a sense of how people work:

Links to all Open Figure Drawing Workshops with Hong Ly and Rebecca Kimmel

The only difference between OFDW 019 and previous OFDWs is that in this Workshop we are doing imaginative work based on the theme of “The Awakening of the Underground Giant” instead of a Master Copy or working from photographic reference.

Please feel free to ask any questions. OFDWs are based primarily around group interaction, and the posting of WIP is encouraged.

Woot! Finally!

Time to pull out the ol’ loin cloth and pose for some reference photos… :buttrock:

This one will be fun

Alright I guess I’ll start of with a concept drawing of the giant. not really sure I like this particular one thou, I guess I’ll do a couple of designs and see if one stands out.
