Open Figure Drawing Workshop 010 with Hong Ly and Rebeccak

Originally posted by dogyears: Actually I have, I’m not a big fan really. It’s awesome software, but a tad too realistic … to be honest I don’t really go out of the way to make my paintings painterly (I would actually like a more photorealistic style), but they just turn out that way somehow. Any tips?

Hmm, I’m not familiar with Gimp, but generally speaking I would say to limit your pallette initially to only a few colors ~ paint swatches on your canvas, and sample them repeatedly. Choose a light / highlight, a midtone, and a dark ~ and stick with that limited pallette. You could use a light pink, a medium orange~brown, and a dark brown, for example, and start to build the figure that way. Don’t try to overcomplicate things. It’s not color that’s going to create form, it’s VALUE. So focus on that and not on color.

Also, now that you’ve got a nice foundation laid, you might just try using smaller brushes to get more detail and to refine the figure. Concentrate on what matters the most ~ and work from large to small as you paint. Don’t go after the eyes first, but the eye sockets, and the general shapes of the head.

After that point, it’s just a matter of continually refining your shape and value placements.

Hope this helps!

~Rebeccak

Thanks. I will give that a shot in my next portrait … maybe sometime later in the day.

Cool! Look forward to the results…update coming up…

thats coming along quite nicely Rebeccak. are you going to color it or is it gonna remain a valuestudie?

Dave,

Thanks. I think I’ll push it as far as I can value~wise, then start to color from there.

Very nice portrait / study! I quite like the lips and nose area especially.

Cheers,

David - I like your portrait. You´ve captured the feeling and the impression well! And I agree with Rebeccak, the lips are very good. A suggestion - put some values in the eyes and you get more life in the portrait. A lightreflection for example.
Rebeccak - Color! Yeeeaahhh :bounce:

I´ve been trying all night to start a new study. But can´t concentrate. We have a big snowstorm moving in here at the moment, and my energy goes to weathercasts and updates on the radio. Just realized that I will not be able to drive to work tomorrow, so maybe I´ll find some time to paint then. The problem is that the kids have to stay at home as well, and we know how much peace and quite that brings :scream:

SaraD,

LOL! A double~edged sword ~ a snow day, and kids! :scream: Hmm, maybe the kids will enjoy sleeping in? All day? :scream:

Looking forward to seeing your lightning~fast painting when it develops.

Cheers,

Another small update…

#50

[left]Step 1 of Colorization: things still looking metallic at this stage due to Blending Modes…will go back and tweak using Normal Mode, as per Stahlberg’s excellent painting tutorial.

Color update…

Not sure which I like better…only difference is the blending mode.

#52

Nice latest update darling… I love the shape contrast you made… really the good choice for this pose…

…mmmmh, maybe feet are little bit too big, not ? and pink too much present for the moment…

#53

Thanks Lolo! Lol, you scared me…I went to edit my post and didn’t realize you had replied…:scream:

Yep, I agree, the first one was too pink. So I changed the Blending Mode on my top painting layer from “Normal” to “Color” in the 2nd image ~ which do you like better?

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

Oups… I forget my good morning Beckie… brrrrr very cold here… -13°C it’s really the winter today…

well… Beckie… this one is really better… less disturbing so far

#55

Lolo,

Good morning. :) LOL, I know, after looking at it from a distance, I realized I was ruining all my value relationships...so setting the blending mode back to color helps it. I'll have to go in and tone down the highlights just a bit...as it looks too shiny / bright right now. :)

Oh, and the feet…I always make the hands / feet bigger initially so I can cut into them with the bkgrd color…I find it easier to paint that way for the hands feet, than to paint the exact right size fingers…guess I’m wierd that way! :scream:

Definitely learning a lot from this one! :wavey:

EDIT: Ah, cold for you there, eh? It’s sleeting just a little here…I hate cold weather with a passion! I’m already ready for spring…:wise:

#56

Agree with you, this one is very interesting… I will do it next week for sure

#57

Sounds good, Lolo. How did your other (work) 2D pieces turn out? Toonshaded animations? Anything you can post?

#58

My actual works… not dear… not very artistic :scream:
but I will post some pieces, old or less… more late in the day (I’m already late in my job… and I would try to doesn’t work tomorrow )

#59

Following Rebbeca’s advise, I forced myself to use three colours only, which I then blended together. I’m rather pleased with the rendering, light wise (though I’m afraid some parts are “overexposed”), not sure about the pose, will have to look at it again tommorow with fresh eyes.
