Open Figure Drawing Workshop 007 with Hong Ly and Rebeccak

ericyeo,

Beautiful work, and great to see you back! :applause: I really love the color / temperature shift from the legs to the shoulders to the face ~ nice work there! The face is quite compelling, ~ her left eye looks a little ā€˜sleepy’ but it is an easy fix. The fan and her left hand look really great so far! The area which I think is flattening out is her lower leg ~ I think if you modeled this area a little more, it would add a lot of life to your really beautiful picture.

I would recommend softening a few of the transitions in the shoulder area ~ I recommend just sampling the colors you already have, and lightly painting over the transitions between colors with a low opacity airbrush or similar brush to soften that area.

Definitely looking forward to your next update! Great to see your work!

Cheers,

Hello DrawMonger and Rebecca

Latest News Headline :
ā€œSpirit Dreamer Puts Foot In Mouth One More Timeā€
LOL

Put photo of model on a layer, then put my latest version on a layer and then put that on top of photo layer then pressed the screen setting in Painter * layers

Then lo and behold - the far eye is off a half inch!
(Who would have thought it??)

The closest eye, eyebrow, nose, jawline and outer edge of face are spot on and line up perfect.

Photo’s eyebrow far-side is half inch above the one in my painting;
Same with photo’s eyeball, far-side.

Shows up clearly in the lower picture.

So Thanks DrawMonger for pointing that error out.
And Thanks Rebecca for pushing me to correct it.

I knew something was off in eyes, but not sure what it was exactly. And didn’t know where to start to correct it. Now I do.

Also I worked on her hair last night. Starting to shape up I think.

Thanks again to the two of you.
Your help is very much appreciated and well taken

It would be a shame not to get this totally accurate after all this work.

Take Care
Glenn

LOL
Glenn

#125

I’m going to make you paint without filters if it kills me. :scream:

#126

Wow! Nice stuff peoples!
Spiritdreamer- I like the hair on yours. Nice face! Keep using that morphing brush! It is a powerful tool. I cant use it in photoshop so I use black to corect my freehand painting.
ericyeo-I like the hair strands. You deserve a beer are painting that so here
it is:beer:Lol. Nice job.

#127

Hi
Pushav
I didn’t use the morph brush on this one,I corected errors around face and figure
useing the background color, which is a very deep purple that looks black, but
turns a nice shade of purple when a spotlight is cast opon it. Only used a couple
of fancy brushes, or as Rebecca calles them filters on the hair, just to get the
swirl going in it, I will go back into the hair later, paint it with regular oil brushes
and brown auburn reds, and golds, to see if I can get the light to shine through it
like in the photo, after I work on the eye problem that is driveing me nuts…:buttrock:
Hey… Nice job so far on your #8 figure. Have you tried using the SOFENER BRUSH
located in the TINTING BRUSH section in painter, you still have painter don’t you
If you do, it’s a really nice brush, that softens the edges, or whatever, without
changing or altering the colors that are there, just softens…GREAT BRUSH…
Try it if you have it, I think you’ll like it.Keep painting the figures the way you are
doing it, you will get more comfortable with it as you go alonge. Start out with
big brushs, and start using smaller, and then smaller brushes, as you progress into
details towards the end. Also nice to see you upping the resolution, as you go
alonge, will get a nicer efect for sure…
Well, talk to you later, and Thanks…

Glenn

Rebecca
I’ll stop useing filters, if you start painting with color…LOL… …With your painter
program of course, just kidding, I Know you don’t have a lot of time to spare, I just
could’nt resist that one. Some day, i’ll get to see one of these figures done by you
useing the oil brushes in painter, i’m sure…can’t wait…:bounce:

Hey Spirit Dreamer, i think you’ve got the best likeness for the model in the whole thread :applause: It’s a real challenge working on these figures…before posting here my longest work on a single pic was about 3hours…now three hours is barely the first WIP! I think the time spent on yours is well worth it, as once you’ve refined the body, it’ll be a great piece.

I certainly don’t mind if you choose not to take on board any crits from yours truely…as you know, i’m no expert

Hi Rebecca and DrawMonger
Redid the far eye this morning.
This is the original version before filters. Spot lights contrast etc.
Brush stokes still visible. Just for you Rebecca. LOL:)
Had to lighten it up before to see where the mistake was more clearly.
When you get a chance let me know what you think.
Take care
Glenn

Hi Rebecca and Everyone - Another update.
Got off face finally after painting out eye on far side. And repainting it a half inch higher
than it was.
Started refining body today. And started putting shadows in hair.
Alot of refinements left to do.
Want to emphasize face and hair more than body.
Will try to do this using light and shadow.
Suggestions and advice always welcome and appreciated.
Am trying for the ā€œVargas-lookā€ on this one.
Take care
Glenn

Spirit Dreamer,

I was thinking of this yesterday and was going to send you a PM, but I may as well mention it here ~ I think it would be great if you created your own Anatomy Thread and called it ā€œAnatomy Thread of SpiritDreamerā€ so that we could see all of your work together in one place. It would be interesting for you, as well I think, to be able to see your progression over time.

This piece is turning out beautifully, and has a much softer feel than some of your other work ~ I’m really liking this one a lot!

How close to being finished to you feel that you are on this? (Out of curiosity).

Cheers,

Hi
Rebecca
This is basically done, I could perfect it for years, like the Mona Lisa… I fell in love with
the pose, lighting and beauty of the model, right from the start.
As far as creating my own thread, I will have to throw a lot of sugar Mrs. Spirit Dreamer’s
way, sounds like an awful lot of work, transfering all my wips fom one thread to another.
She’s the one who knows all the in’s and out’s about the computers… I just do the
painting LOL!, and am still typeing with one finger.
Maybe you could explain to her,how to do it, and make it sound easy LOL, FOR MY SAKE!
Sounds like a great plan to me. I also really like your idea for makeing finished paintings
from these models. Maybe study how the old masters ran their workshops. Maybe do
one painting, where each student contributes a figure, and piece of the landscape, like
like that one the anunciaccion of the virgin I think it’s called, where Da Vinci did his first
angle in oils, and blew everyone else away. Creat a concept, and have everyone’s specialty
showcased in it. Just a thought, one of many, will have to dream on them some more, and
get back to you.
Let me know what you think…

Glenn

while this dream does your name credit and sounds like a wonderful form of workshop it will, on the other hand, certainly lead to general dislike of some parts of the final composition, namely those I put my hands on.

#138

Hi
MR MU
LOL…Hey, look at it this way, everybody will go out of their way to help you perfect your
piece of the puzzle, and that can only lead to improvement for everyone involed,… it becomes
a win win situation, for everyone. A lot of the old masters probably said the same thing you
just said, and look what happened to them. It’s only a little paint, and a lot of vanity
that gets in the way of perfection. Besides, your piece of the puzzle might end up being the
best piece, if there is such a thing, you never know until you try. I bet you, if we ever did
a painting like this, we would all come away knowing a lot more than when we started, about
painting, and ourselves, which is the whole object of and lesson of this kind of team effort.
If we ended up with a beautiful painting, which i’m positive we would, then so much the better.
After all it is a tried and proven method, we’re talking about here, You Know !

agreed! And whatsover I say that sounds like skepticism - you can count me in anyways…:scream:

I think I was actually - in a shy, fuzzy and all in all rather inefficient way - trying to find out if beginners were going to be accepted on the team…

Mr. Mu,

Beginners accepted! Beginners accepted! :wip:
