Open Figure Drawing Workshop 007 with Hong Ly and Rebeccak

Mr. Mu,

I am seriously sitting here snarfing away! :scream: Tries to control snarfing fails :scream:

I get my ā€˜low~pun’ humor from my dad ~ let’s put it this way, there weren’t any girls born into the family for generations, and they had to import me from Korea! :scream:

thanks, and I surely will. This is so much fun and it helps so much. I am planning to do a anatomy thread, starting with hand studies (I always avoid hands. Because I do it a lot, I can tell instantly when someone is chosing poses because the hands are hidden, lol, this has to stop!). Already collected material and resources for this. But I think I will give the beginner’s lounge a try also, and erm the sketchathon and there’s the dsg, of course, and urgh just starved in front of the monitor

ROFLMAO!!! :scream: My evil plan is weerrrrrrrrrrrrrrking!!! thrums fingers snickers I can’t wait!!

One question though: In the opposing curves thread you suggest overdoing the lines to establish beautiful forms and masses - but in these OFDW we are supposed to stick to the reference as possible? Or not?

You are free to do as you please in the OFDW, Mr. Mu. It’s funny, it’s become more of an OFPW (Open Figure Painting Workshop) where the 15 Min. Sketchathon is more @ drawing ~ which I think is cool! Bear in mind, you are more than welcome to do more than one piece off of the images posted here ~ say, for instance, you wanted to do a 15 min. drawing, then a more extended painting ~ it’s totally up to you. In fact, for the next OFDW, I’m going to coordinate the 15 MS with the OFDW so that if folks want to do fast sketches first then extend their pieces in the OFDW, they may do so. I’m crazy like that.

Cheers,

lol, yea we all need professional help - isn’t it ironic that we came here to find it… for a completely different issue?:scream:

#83

It has been a while since I have been here in a lifedrawing thread.
Spiritdreamer wanted me to post again so here goes…

Done in photoshop7 with wacom graphire2
I opened up the reference next to the painting in photoshop to get some sort of likeness going.
Here is my w.i.p. so far I am not done with it yet…

So how’s my driving?

#84

pushav,

I’d say very good! The red, green, and cream colors are really doing it for me ~ nice work so far! Actually, I think this is just about the best work of yours I’ve seen to date ~ keep it up!

If you start to go too light in the face, you might try adding a layer filled with a darker color at a low opacity in PS ~ something like a dark bluish color, set on a blending mode like color or hue. Then start sampling and painting again. Always try to bring your values up from a midtone ~ right now, I think you’ve run out of value range on the face. I would try giving it more definition by adding back in a midtone range, then lightening and darkening from there.

Cheers,

It started off being crap. I just keep on adding ā€œa littleā€ then the ā€œlittle bitā€ kept on adding up into a decent image. I was shocked that it turned out like this so far. It is hard to belive that I used the default round brush with meduim opacity.

As for running out of value I felt that her legs where lacking a bit of pushed darker cream color.
It is hard to see the billions of colors on her face due to the size of the document so I will define it a bit more.

#86

Way to go Pushav…Looking Good:bounce:
I’ve been useing a round oil brush#30 set real wide or big size wize, found in the tinting
brushes painter 8, seemes to blend the colors nicely, just like when your painting in oils
with a real brush on canvas. You might want to try it out, if you have it in your painter
program.
Great to see you back…Looks like your really starting to get the hang of this painting
method, Great job so far, you might want to set the resolution high for the face, make
it big on the screen, and really capture the facial planes. Look at the previous page,
I put a method for getting a likeness there, might be of some help to you, it’s the
method I am useing on my models face for this one. Seemes to be working so far.
Check it out, it’s on the same page as that lesson on getting a likeness, I think.
Anyway, keep up the great work. My finger is getting tired, too much typing today LOL!
Talk to you later
Take Care
Glenn

Hehe, BTW, SD, thanks for the post on getting a proper likeness ~ that was great, thanks! I think I’ll start to set up the next OFDW now, before the server backs up. o_O

Cheers,

Open Figure Drawing Workshop 008 with Hong Ly and Rebeccak is now open and ready for business!!

Remember that all OFDWs remain open on a continuous basis, so you may continue to post on any OFDW. But most folks move on to the most recent OFDW.

See everyone there!

Hi Rebecca
Hope your not mad at me, just speaking my feelings in public again. Don’t want to see you,
or your excellent teaching methods get spread too thin, makes it weaker, instead of stronger.
Just my opinion though, something to think about anyway, as this great creation of yours
expands. United we stand strong,Devided we stand weak, kind of thought.
REALLY LIKE your idea of combining QUEENSOULS site and this one, should work great.
Hey…and it will be a real plesure to see you get more of a chance to draw and paint the
way you like to,when you want to. Looks like the rust peeled right off on those last few
drawings you did on QueenSouls site…GREAT ENERGY in those drawings, and STYLE.
I’m just trying to help as much as I am able to, and learning as much as I can, but if
I cross any line of yours, be sure to just tell me to shut up and get to work…LOL!
Take Care and Thank You for all the help you’ve given me Rebecca…

Glenn,

No worries! Hehe, it would be hard for me to be mad at you, considering all the wonderful work you’ve done and are doing on the Anatomy Forum in general, and the OFDWs in particular. I’m not mad at all, I was just trying to keep the peace. Tempers flare easily on forums, and it’s not easy to keep everyone happy sometimes.

The thing to understand is that the Anatomy Forum is meant to be as unexclusive as possible. Thus, while I may be in agreement with you with respect to sustained study being important, I also really do believe that short / gestural drawings can often be even more important, particularly to beginning artists. And in truth, I think these kinds of exercises are important for all artists to practice. I recall that when I was in school, pros in the field would often come back to sit in on classes to do quick sketches ~ particularly for people in the animation field, this is really important ~ to capture a sense of movement quickly.

The Anatomy Forum will naturally grow and change, and while the OFDWs are an important part of the forum, they were never meant to be the only part. I am thrilled to see new threads like the 15 MS flourish, as I think it brings fresh talent to the forum and promotes the great interaction which you are seeing there.

At any rate, don’t worry about me being ā€˜mad’ at you, because I definitely am not! You add an incredible amount to the Anatomy Forum, and it wouldn’t be the same without your contribution.

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

Hi Rebecca
Finally got a chance to get back to this model.
Mrs Spirit Dreamers been working on my web site.
Made a whole new front page and second page.
Take a peak if you get a chance.
A lot of stuff I did in this forum on those two pages.
Up front and center where they belong.
Anyway worked on this face today using that
ā€œHow to Get a Likenessā€ method.
Seems to work.
Get it down pat with more practice, I think.
Going to do #8 models on Queensoul’s site tomorrow.
Get them in my memory, then come back and work some more on this one.
Might be a good system for me I think.
Good idea combining the two sites.
Should work out nice for me.
Also Ballistic publishing wrote me an e-mail last night,
said my Master/Servant entry made the next to final selection list
for their new Painter book. Yea!
Had to tell somebody, so wish me luck.
And when you get a free moment (lol) let me know what you
think about this face.
Still a lot of work left on it.
Just taking my time and trying to get it right.
Take care
Glenn

@pushav,

Nice! And nice to see your progress piece, though I still feel your gynormous signature detracts from all of your pieces. Beautiful work on the model so far! I really think that you are progressing!

@SpiritDreamer,

WOW, Congratulations on being a finalist! I am really thrilled for you, you certainly work hard enough, and you absolutely deserve it! :bounce: Let us know what happens ~ I think it’s great!

Took a fast look at your site, and will look at it more closely later on. Very nice stuff, you have really done a commendable amount of work here! Keep up the great work, you really keep the OFDWs humming! :wip:

Best of luck with the Painter Competition! Even if you don’t get it this year, imagine how good you’ll be in one year!

Cheers,

Pushav

I like this one of yours! - :applause: I like the way the hair came out alot.
You should try doing a large portrait of this model’s face using that
Get a Likeness Method I posted.
Works good I just tried it out on my painting,
Take care
Glenn

#95

Thanks Rebecca!

#96

No problem! Well~deserved! :applause:

#97

Why are we clapping all clapping :applause: Lol.
Seriously thanks for the comments

Spiritdreamer-Yeah I should have I did not expect it to turn out this good. I was painting at 75 dpi lol. I wanted to add more detail to the face but the low resolution prevented me from doing it.

Rebecca-Lol people always tell me that lol. I want pepople to know who did the painting.
Soo I will be a household name like a sony playstation lol. Rofl!

One more update from me before i jump to 008…adjusted the background. Thinking that the dark blue is the way to go because as a cool colour it should (in theory) promote the warmer colours of the foreground and also thinking of complementary colours. Hope it works.

Great work Pushav and Spirit Dreamer! Congrats also SD and SaraD for your entries…I hope you both make the books! :applause:

Pushav I agree with Rebecca that you should tone down the sig.

SD, I think the likeness is spot on. A couple of minor things you might look at…I do think that the eyes are slightly misaligned (where they meet the nose), as is the tip of the nose and the center of the lips. What do you think?
