"OneMonth" - Reel 2006 - Philip Hartmann

Agreed.

Since the reel is already short, the girl model should be finished, rather than omitted.

#22

Spider is great, presentation is great, you probably need more actual content though. The woman is quite average, she looks more like an alien.

#23

Phil Hartman? I remember you from such roles in the simpsons as Troy Mclure and Lionel hutz!

Seriously now - nice reel. I thought the head on the girl was a touch large and her face was a bit tight, but the spider was very good.
As roberto said, the presentation of this reel is the best part. Great graphic design, lighting and art direction. Only 3 models on the reel, so more examples of your modeling ability would have been good, but its quality, not quantity that counts!

Good stuff.

Nice lighting reel and compositing, but modeling in my opinion is only a very basic skill, I’m afraid. I find it quite disturbing to see this on the front page really, it’s quite demotivating for everyone who’s got better modeling skills and still don’t get on the front page. I thought that modeling skills could at least be filtered out of a flashy presentation and rated objectively. Forgive my scepticism, you’ve got an eye for composition and presentation, but I’d spend some more time in Steven Stahlberg’s human topology thread.

#25

Yes, I would imagine that employers don’t give a toss about flashy presentation, and a boring reel with top quality modeling would win them over every time.

#26

[left]Really nice reel, i thought the music fitted perfectly with the design of it. It’s a shame you only got to put 3 models in it, but nevertheless, i thought it was pretty good - especially liked the spider anim.
Good job!

I’m also a fan of the mood of your demo. Modeling wasn’t bad at all, just not the most impressive ever seen, but hey… is that necessary? Being a pro in making simple things looking special is just as important.

Just one little question: what type (font) did you use? I like it a lot, but I can’t seem to find it in standard windows/photoshop fonts…

#28

Awesome reel man. cool models. cool stuff

#29

And you and oDDity got a point.

To be honest, I picked it, because of the quality of the presentation.

No matter what others say man, It is the simplicity of this reel and the presentation that makes it so great. In the little things you have shown many things can be said about you. People like Roberto and others who`ve got the eye will see the potential to become a great artist in you… It was worth the front page. 5 stars from me. :applause:

After reading the thread a bit, I saw indeed that you plugged it because of the presentation, I agree, it’s nicely done and probably worthy to be plugged, I was just thrown off balance by the “modeling reel” title.
And I agree with oDDity as well, sadly it’s more about how you bring it and through who, then the actually work which is being brought. I’ve had the pleasure to work with plenty of people who had little skill, but a huge paycheck, just because they know how to bring it to the CEO… luckely these guys never stay for long, cause eventually the supervisors realise that the price/production ratio is way higher then what the flashy presentation initially made them believe… Ach well, as long as we’re getting some good ideas reguarding presentation ^^

#36

Thank you Roberto!it’s a great honor for me!

thanks for any comment!

#37

great presentation. I like the arrow transitions. Spider is the best, I like your attention to detail with the hairs and floating particles in the background.
The phone was slick, I just thought that it was too “glowy”. Did you use trapcode’s starglow for that? It was still sweet, it went well with the music and gave it a nice dreamy feel.

good work

#38

awesome work dude… i know your gonna get a job in no time.
the spider is my favorite too. the look and feel is just great.
keep it up!

the model of the girl drags the whole piece down a bit.
the presentation of the phone and the spider is great. especially good attention to detail with that flaky stuff in the bg during the spider shot.
i think the spider shot on its own for sure is frontpage-worthy. it’s visually very appealing.
the transitions give the whole thing a nice touch as well.

so my question is: how did you do these light effects? all those differently tinted rays?
is it a plugin which has some options for chromatic abberiation? (hope thats the right spelling)

I tend to agree with oDDity and derby on this one.
