Heh Heh  It is not just that simple. Most of the professional engines such as Virtools, Renderware etc… support 3D data from 3D Studio Max, Maya, Lightwave, Softimage etc… Max and Maya is defenitly supported by all professional (high priced) engines. Programmers love Softimage because it is the easiest and the best software to write plugin for.

There are many engine out there you want to check out before you make a decision. Since you are going for high priced engine, I am guessing money is not a problem for you. In that case, you should call each of them and talk with the representative. You can get a trial version of the engine and try it yourself after you sign a Non-Disclosure agreement. Then you can buy the one you like.

If you have no clue of the programming aspect, it is better you leave the judgement of these crucial matters into the hands of a programmer. Most profs know a little bit of 3D and pretty good in these matters.

Getting the so called “high quality” graphics has nothing to do with the 3D package artists use. It depends on many things such as the intended client’s hardware, time you want to spend tweaking and usage of features such as Normalmapping, Lightmapping etc… which all adds up many things to the development.

Hope it helps

Let a poor programmer recommend a cheap engine: http://www.truevision3d.com
It’s DirectX/windows only, single license is 150$. The new closed beta is in progress and features exporters for Maya and 3DSMax.

Works great for me.

you might want to just mod a game instead, it seems you dont know too much about games dev. so i think you should do a few big mod projects first.

Hiya.

What type of game are you planning on making? That should be your first order of business in choosing a game engine. If you tell us what type of game (MMORPG, First Person Shooter, Turn Based Strategy, etc.), and we might be able to give you a few names.
