Oil rig animation

I’ve just finished an animation for the kick-off presentation of a sub sea oil field development. It’s a movie trailer style 4 min animation. A new project has just been started to develop two nearby fields using sub sea wells and to connect it to the existing platform via a new, smaller platform. The two fields, Callanish and Brodgar are named after megalithic standing stones located on the Isle of Lewis and Orkney.

It’s a bit different than the stuff that I would normally do and I was very pleased with the finished result. There is a quicktime movie and some more stills on my website.

Software used:
3ds Max 7
Digimation Grow

Garry Clarke

Here are a few stills

:thumbsup:nicly done

but i dont get the colored ground:shrug:

Could it be that the coloured ground that you mention is the sea?

wow, that was awesome! i think the colored ground represents the oil deposits. correct me if i am wrong.

Ah! I see now!

The coloured ‘mountains’ are a representation of the seismic image of the oil field, the shape is accurate and in reality is way below the surface of the seabed. The presentation is aimed at engineers and other oil industry types, who would know what it represents without an explanation, sorry for any confusion.

Damn, my heart was racing from watching that, hahah the music is too epic bro! haha

Very nice work… that digimation plug’in is dope, works well with a engineering presentation.

You do all this yourself, or part of a team? How long did it take?

Nice work.

Modelling: Top notch very detailed and great architectural visualization, though i would get a stronger sense of scale if there is something in the animation to compare to like a boat next to the platform or a helicopter coming in to land or somethin. Just my opinion.

Texturing/lighting: great simpicity puts focus on the shape and dimensions rather than “realism” which is what i’m guessing you needed to get across.

Animation: nice fluid movement in the transitions and fly-bys. Sweet

Soundtrack: Gotta say its a bit over the top for a corporate project, felt like i was watchin the intro to some spy-thriller or somethin.

But heck man i prolly couldn’t do most of that so sweet great job.

The visual were pretty much all my work, someone helped with some of the modelling and of course the sound and editing were done by other people.

Took around 6 weeks.

Hey, that’s very nice, and 6 weeks is impressing!

I only have minor crits - like, the rain in the beginning looks 2D, and the water rushing off of the platform that rises from the ocean looks like it drops too fast (which means the platform looks smaller).

But very nice!

-I don’t know how much you know about the soundtrack, but I’m betting it was temp-scored to Pearl Harbor, Crimson Tide and The Rock, and then a composer came in and wrote custom music?

Yeah you’re spot on, the rain is a 2d effect - we were running out of time, I did the rain quickly in AfterEffects with the intention of replacing it later, they were happy with the rain and time eventualy ran out.

And you’re spot on with the music as well, I think there’s some Cold Mountain in there as well.

Haha, well such is the combination of temporary solutions and tight deadlines. A superb result, still.
