Official Mudbox demonstration by Petey Konig at CA/MB Workshop!

#629

I’m an unashamed Mudbox fan, I first found out about it when I asked Dave Cardwell if he could show me how to do some stuff in ZBrush and instead he showed me Mudbox.

I still to this day can’t do much in ZBrush, now I wouldn’t blame the UI on that stumbling block, it’s just I don’t feel comfortable using the program itself - I can’t really describe the problem much better than that, sorry.

I notice there’s a few other dunces out there when it comes to ZBrush, so I don’t feel so bad about “not-getting-it”.

Not that ZBrush isn’t a great program, I’ve seen some amazing work (like I’m sure you all have) being produced out of it, work that wasn’t really possible before it came along. And I’m sure Pixelogic is going to make the program even better in future releases.

The thing is I’ve also seen some amazing work being produced by Mudbox (my sculpting work has improved, that’s why I’m excited about it). It’s not as robust and feature-ladden as ZBrush at the moment. Hopefully it’s gets supported by the CG-community and grows to support as many cool and useful features as ZBrush.

Like so many others before me have said, this is one area of the 3D world which needs some competition, now I don’t mean a “fierce-battle-to-the-death” type competition, I mean something that will promote innovation in this field.

I’m not sure how much of an assurance this is to you all, but from working with Dave, Andrew and Tibor - one couldn’t ask for a better group of people to be creating something like Mudbox. I know they want to put out the best piece of software they can.

And best of luck to them.

Alright enough of this appreciation society…

You may recommence the “my-software-is-better-than-your-software” posts. :scream:

The MB feature list is cool for a 1.0 version.
it will not do all ZB can, but its definitely a product to test .
hope a demo comes out soon.

Features i liked the most are nodal structure and the management
of multiple meshes, and cameras and lights too.

Since i am a Zb user i wait for my 2.5 free upgrade (LOL)
so i can also wait and see how MB grows.
there will be a huge war between the two, and the winners will be us customers.

#631

Im glad some people are begining to see the light.

#632

A good comparison?

Starting Mudbox with absolutely no experience, didn’t read one iota of readme or help files, didn’t watch any video tutorials.

After 10 minutes :

Now…

Starting Zbrush with absolutely no experience, didn’t read one iota of readme or help files, didn’t watch any video tutorials.

After 2 hours :

#633

oh god…I beg of you skymatter, please give me access to mudbox :frowning:

#634

Come on, guys, could we keep this on a constructive level?

#635

May I ask what’s so “un-constructive” about it?

#636

hey Gi Joe,
i dig up and found the first picture i created whth Zbrush in 2003. At this time, i worked with Zb 1.55. There wasn’t subdivision implemented, neither smooth brush, we couldn’t go over 300000 poly.
I had absoulutely no experience, and didn’t read the manual too.
It was a looong time ago !!!

#637

Although I may not agree with GI Joe’s way of telling it , I agree with what he is saying.

I went to a friends house the other day who is on the beta team and got to use mudbox for a short while. You really just sit down and go , there is no learning curve. If only other apps are so clearly laid out and intuitive. I dont remember having so much fun from doing 3d in my life , it really was like real sculpting.

regardless of if I get into the beta or not , the day it gets released I will be there with my credit card number.

#638

Everyone seems to have a friend who is a Mudbox beta tester.

#639

So your point is : “I am having problems adapting to non -uniform user interfaces !” …point taken !

“Strange and disturbing this puzzle is!” -Yoda

It is amazing how al of a sudden many people have these ‘beta tester’ friends whenever something ‘cool’ (damn I hate that word) is due for release isn’t it? Amazingly enough most times to coincide with a recent piracy of ‘said cool application’. Of course it’s equaly possible that Skymatter have just added hundreds of new beta testers at the very same moment, however its unlikely. lol

nowdays are so much bad application on the market… last week i tried xsi and i couldn’t make anything in it, they say i have to read that manual. I think i’m gonna change to a better app, where i don’t need to do this nonsense.

#642

is this thread a amazing display of ignorance or what :). People not wanting to move with the times or even attempting to learn. Thats a fast track on how not to get far in 3d, be itjob-wise or just getting nice images.

If you dont learn, you will become obsolete and wont find yourself getting anywhere, i dont know how many packages i had to learn at work, and im sure its the same for anyone in film, but you learn anything that is required to make something work. If you said… no i dont want to read that doc or “no i prefer X app”, they would probably laugh at you… then close the door as your leave for the last time :).

But hey, if your a hobbyist and your doing it for fun what the hell.

#643

I’ve got to agree with Phrezy on that one, if you aren’t prepared to put the effort in your not going to learn, its as simple as that I’m afriad. So unless someone can magically inject modelling knowledge into someones head when they first start out modeling, you have a choice to either go down the same road learning wise as we all went, or give up. I don’t mean that to sound harsh but it is the truth. I never thought I’d ever see people complaining because they had to read a manual to learn to use software!

i heard exactly the same thing in comparison with zbrush 2 not 2.5…half the speed of Z2 actually…

but after watch the demo on mudbox and see how well and smooth handle more than 10 million polys i guess that all that are just rumors…or maybe they were refering to a very old beta version of mudbox.
I mean…14 million polys in real time in an normal pc…that`s speed!!:buttrock:

In Soviet Russia, Mudbox beta pirates you!

This is just getting pathetic.
Back to work people!

If as much energy was spent on making stuff as is being poured into this thread, we could have completed a short film by now.
And maybe cured cancer.

I think what some people are trying to get over is the welcome ability, to be able to just pick up a brush and paint with it… as opposed to putting paint in an airbrush, and having to correctly control the mix of air and paint to get a stroke… When you use Mudbox, you find this ability to just work very apparent… Somthing that is not so apparent for many people, when using Zbrush.
Now dont get me wrong, I personally dont have any problems with Zbrush now, but when we had to use it at an fx company I worked in, it turned out, getting to grips with it was not a 10 minute thing… If that was MB, i think it would have turned out ok…so for me the beauty of Mb is the out of the box simplicity… Im aware now… that these discussions are quite heated, and people have their attactchments to the tools they work with… This is somthing I learned to distance myself from. I feel its best to view software as a tool, every once in a while you find a tool you like the feel of, but to use it where others are more convienient can be detrimental. What really matters is what your doing, So for people who want to sculpt… Digital Sculptors, MB is a godsend… no faffing about, no fuss no mess…
I think this is mainly what makes people rave about it so much…

And the cancer, well, I think there could be alot of patent issues considering the amount of people involved in this discussion

I never felt like getting involved with this thread but after seeing the many undue criticism towards mudbox mostly because of Zb 2.5, I will.

  1. How many people are actually beta-testing Zbrush 2.5? None you say?! Hmmm for something that was hinted at almost a year ago (I think) it should very well be announced right now. I might be the only that feels that ZB 2.5 will be out much later than most of you anticipate especially when you consider that the pixologic website doesn’t allude to the new developments of zb 2.5. I’m thinking they pulled a “SONY E3 2005”.

  2. Skymatter never ever compared MB to ZB.Then why do you? A lot of you are skeptical but surely at least some of these positice MBox testimonials are true.

  3. Mbox isn’t even at the 1.0 stage yet while Zbrush is at 2.5(although it is very slow).Just wait … let Mbox mature.

I know a lot of this sound redundant but just wanted to rant/vent… Model away folks…
