Objects stretching during vertex merge


Hello, if anyone could give some advice on this matter it would be much appreciated.

Process -

(In object mode) > (select two objects) > (combine) so their some distance apart, then (In vertex mode) (selecting two vertices of each model) (select merge or merge to center) <tried both, they snap to the points however they stretch my objects…

I’m trying to jigsaw models together, if you will, vert to vert the two objects are joining at an edge and are both he same numerical value in length it’s the stretching I’m trying to eliminate, does anyone know how you do this? So they objects transforms to that location, also there are no faces touching on either object.
