Objects Self Illuminate setting in Rhino 4?

#1

Anyone know where the “Shaded Objects Self-Illuminate” setting is in Rhino 4? Or did they get rid of it in the new version? I used to use this in Rhino 3, it used to live in the Advanced Display Settings dialogue box, and I found that turning this on was quite helpful while modelling.

Thanks for your help

I looked in v3 for that and I did not have it? I have advanced in V4, and see that you can change colors and stuff like that… Have you messed with those settings?

#3

just to clarify its location in v3, one can access the advanced settings menu by either typing in “advanced display” in the command line, or it is also part of the top drop down menu (to the right of “render”) under “bonus” in my version of v3 (i’ve noticed some versions of v3 doesn’t have “bonus” though). i’ve looked seemingly everywhere in the advanced settings of v4 but can’t find it. it’s quite useful because everything is very bright when you’re modelling, you don’t get annoying dark areas especially underneath objects when in shaded mode…

display options/advanced settings/ shaded > shade settings.
here select “color and material usage” which has a drop down menu for 'custom material for
all objects" when this is chosen the “Custom” button will become active where there is an options for this.
…self illuminate away.

I did type it in, there was no advanced setting in my V3, if there ever was it has gone to v4…
Bonus You mean people aren’t updating the rhinov3? I have bonus in v3.

CLONEOPS probablly has it.

It is in rhino3 Sr5b.’-service realease 5b" -AdvancedDisplay - more than 25 new display options.
It is a little less complicated that in v4.

thanks for the info. liked the effort on your screen shots:) yea, the setting is a bit more complicated than in v3 which was more ‘set it and forget it’. i’m still trying to play with the settings to get it to the exact overall ‘look’ (brightness levels, low ‘reflectivity’, etc) that the setting gave me in v3. it doesn’t look quite the same yet as i’m playing with these various sliders. if you have any luck replicating it, let me know.

I had the latest v3? I had to in order to upgrade. It may disappeaer after upgrading to v4.

Oh well…

#9

I’m not sure exacty what you are going for…the default and only setting i can at the moment
get in v3 is a blinding white/unshadowed look --i actually had to turn away from the screen for a moment. -show me a screenshot what you had in v3 and i am sure i can get it in4.

take a look at the image attached. i’m an architect and this is a model of the building i am working on for work. along the left side is the are screenshots of the model in v3 using the ‘objects self illuminate setting’ and the screenshots along the right are the same exact model opened in v4 using the advanced settings->shaded->custom materials for all objects ->luminosity = 100 (the respective dialogue boxes are shown along the bottom)

in v3 with the setting, objects are more evenly colored (compare orange panels on top right vs top left image), in an undifferentiated way (when viewing the model from the top and from the bottom) there is little or no ‘shadow’ effect when surfaces turn the corner, wireframe lines outlining the objects are more easily discernable (thus easier to osnap to) and not washed out (compare the linework in the white portions in the pair of images 2nd from top).

in v4, with my current settings where luminosity is turned to 100, there are instances of uneven coloring, there is a shadow effect when surfaces turn the corner, and lines outlining the object are washed out. moving the sliders in the dialogue box change the overall look, but so far i have been unsuccessful replicating the same visual effect found with the setting in v3.

to some, this may seem like a trivial matter, but when you have a complex model with layers upon layers, and when you have to stare at this day in and day out, i need all the help i can get, and ‘objects self-illuminate setting’ was just that. if you cloneops, or anyone has any luck replicating this effect in v4, or have any other insights on this matter, it would be greatly appreciated.

@ptdgwb:
Can you please try using “Default Lighting” for the Lighting method and set the Ambient Color to gray or white? That gives me quite a flat-shade on my side. Hope that helps.

#12

ptdgwb… I’m also an architect and I can completely understand how this would assist your process. I’m on a computer w/o Rhino atm… but, What I can tell you is that command is only available in Rhino 3 Bonus package (excellent tools in that package [especially colour backfaces] just not enough to justify its purchase imho :)).

As I said I don’t have Rhino with me atm but the first suggestion that came to mind was playing with the ambient lighting in the basic display options… that should lessen the shadows.

Good luck I to would like to know.

[edt] lol… sorry Snecx. Looks like I jumped the gun a bit there. Well excellent suggestion Snecx… haha

What Snecx said…and maybe override your object color to pure white +5-10% grey as i see it is not checked off in the R4 picture, anyway that is what i did.
The only problem i see with this is that intersections are not
shadowed and are difficult to see.
cheers.

thanks snecx and everyone for their help! i was able to get it quite close to the setting on v3, other than the fact that i had to change the white layer color from original file to grey for the lines outlining the ‘white’ surfaces to show up in v4.
