Obj Wings and Maya

#1

So I’ve made a couple of models already in wings, and i want to render them in maya, however im running into all sorts of issues with using an obj to do it.

If I create a simple cube in wings and inport it into maya as an obj and then create the same cube in maya, and assign both the same uv’s and same shader and same everything, i get one smoothed out(wings), garaud like:shrug:, and one flat shaded(maya). i renormalize both cubes to have the same nodes workign on both. Maya’s is the way it should be be.

attached is what i get. it seems like I am importing some extra data that I cannot see. I’d use the FBX plugin for wings, since alias owns fbx. but every time i install that plugin, it says sucessful, but i am still missing the functionality. Is there something blissfully obvious I’m missing? thanks in advance!

I’m guessing but try to set the edges to hard inside wings before exporting.

never used the fbx plugin…

Thanks dgud, that actually fixed it! Thats crazy though that even me in maya setting all the edges to hard it wouldnt. I think it has to do with the way it imported. Have any of you guys gotten the fbx plugin to work?

#4

I just talked to Björn about it, and it needs a recompilation to work with the latest release, give him a couple of days…

yeah tha had me confused for ages, but i figured it out, hope this help alot of peopel in the future.

I’m having the same problem that LordApophis was having. I downloaded some free models from CGNetworks, http://cgnetworks.com/story_custom.php?story_id=1115&page=, to play with and practice rigging, and they are OBJ files. When I import them they do the same thing LordApophis was talking about, but I can’t set the edges to hard in the program they were created in, because I obviously don’t have those files, all I have are the OBJs. And like
LordApophis said, setting the edges to hard in Maya doesn’t do anything at all. Any other work arounds?

rhino23,
Have you tried exporting the meshes as Maya obj and then reimporting them?

#8

Hey, It DOES normally work when setting edges to hard, you should really try it first. Under the modeling drop down box go into the menu, edit polygons, normals, softhard [], and set the setting to all hard when the object is selected. Give it a go, it usually does work.

LordApophis- I’m sorry, I guess I wan’t clear in my post, but I had already tried to set the edges to hard in Maya and had the same result as you, it didn’t work.

nemyax- that fixed it, thanks a lot. I don’t know why I didn’t think of that.

in the edit polygons menu there is the normals menu. In that menu there is an option to set normal to faces. This will “harden” the edges. After you do this, you’ll be able to smooth and harden normals as you want.
