Nurbs Modeling???

#1

Ok now i am getting hang of this modeling “thing” in maya and i love it.but one question that i always wanted to get answered is can we do something “good” with NURBS  the name “NURSB” sounds cool but really it doesn’t seems cool from what i can see :frowning:
i checked some tutorials online to find some modeling with NURBS (youtube,Viemo,DT) but all they do is moving hulls, adding isoparms…etc.
so is NURBS actually useful?? i heard these are great for smooth objects but even poly can be Smoothed as NURBS from what i can see.
so NURBS useful or not?
what can we model with this NURBS?

It’s CG baby!!!

I’ve used NURBS (Non Uniform Ration B-Splines) in Maya before but not in any way extensively. Takes a bit of getting used to but is nice to use as a change. I would assume NURBS is good for items that need to be absolutley perfect in shape and scale. Perhaps from a design point of view rather than a free-form modelling perspective.
Complex shapes in NURBS is a lot lighter geometry wise than say a polygon model where you would need a huge amount of polygons to make the same shape.

Any type of smooth shapes NURBS can be used to good effect, but again having not used it so much I’m not totally sure when is best to use them and when not.

Perhaps other people on here have a better insight than me. Would be interesting to find out actually.
