nParicles - How can I change color on a previously cached sim?

I’ve got a nparticle Sim, shaded using clouds and now I want to create another render pass where those particles are shaded depending on Age Normalized. Therfore, I created a new Render Layer, some layer overrides on the particle color ramp…and it seems like those overrides are ignored when rendering.

Creating a second cache just for the color/Age Pass seems not like an option. Is there any suitable way to go to override color without caching twice?
