Now OPEN!!! Open Figure Drawing Workshop with zhuzhu and Rebecca Kimmel 004

raptor|3D,

Good to see your update! I think that there are some noticeable improvements.

Books which I would recommend to anyone and which I will recommend to you are any by Burne Hogarth. He has a way of breaking down complex form into simple shapes that make it easy to understand.

Here is the link to Burne Hogarth’s books.

I think you have quite a nice line drawing here, but I think in areas, particularly the face, there is a bit of depth missing which I think Burne’s books might help you to see.

Mike / default.rol has been posting Master Copies from his books on the Master Copies thread on pages 9 and 10 here. Check them out to get a sense of what Burne’s drawings look like.

I think you should go ahead and start shading. But I think the thing which both you and Slux need to work on is loosening up a bit, and getting something of the gesture in your drawings. You are both technically really good, but you should try to give your drawings more of a sense of life by using more fluid and loose lines ~ not to say inaccurate lines, but lines which ‘breathe’.

You are doing a great job ~ I look forward to seeing your update!

Cheers,

~Rebecca

Thanks, Rebecca.

This is the kind of comments I really need. Very informative and helpful.

[/i] Yeah, I absolutely understand what you mean and I am not satisfied with my drawing. I can see that absence in my drawing(s). It looks too “syntetic”. Actually it will be next step to improve my drawing skills to that level. When I´m drawing I also feel that - no fluid lines, no ´breathe´ and therefore the process is not so entertaining like it should be.

Actually I am just not good at drawing at all, maybe some of my drawings may look good but this is nothing compared to drawings from really good artists. These also took pretty much time to draw (and this is another evidence that I draw too slow and without flow). I guess it will take some next hundreds of drawings to be able draw fluid lines but I´ll try to jump in and try it in my next drawings.

Now I´m earning money for new computer (for recently bought Maya) so I have almost no time to draw, but soon I want to start my self-study and I plan to draw as often as possible like Slux and many others here do now. Reminds me I could also start some anatomy thread - this is great option here.

I also want to jump in sculpting and 3D, so I can´t wait to the moment when I will have necessary equipment and start doing this all artistic stuff. It will be fun.

See ya

raptor|3D,

I think it will be great to see you ‘start’ your artistic study in earnest!

I think a major way to learn to draw in a looser, more gestural fashion, is to do copies from Master Drawings…why reinvent the wheel? There is an abundant history to art which often gets ignored.

I hope to see more of your work! Congratulations on your new purchase of Maya ~ get it while you can.

Cheers,

Hmmmm I see I guess I will have to work on it  … but yeah I’am aware of that.

Hi Rebecca

ZhuZhu and his ladies

Here is an example of what I had in mind to try to sell. Tried to compse it better than my last effort with layers. Trying to capture that mysterious Carvagio feeling with light
and mood. Getting closer I think. Definitely having a lot of fun trying anyway.
I am still working on it. probably put purple satin under neath female figure on right.
Wouldn’t be possible without you honest opinion and expert advice.
When you get a moment let me know what you think
ANd that goes for everyone else who reads this.
I highly value all of your opinions and suggestions.
Take care
Glenn

That bird is cool! Along with the eyes.

Spirit Dreamer,

Hey there, I think right now the spatial / size relationships are a bit odd…and to be honest, I don’t understand the significance of the dragon / creature ~ is there a narrative here, or are you just compositing figures? I think that is the main thing to consider.

Spatially, the rightmost (female) figure reads as though she should be in back of zhuzhu, but she is too large to be, and you’ve placed her in front of zhuzhu, so it’s confusing. The leftmost female figure is too small to be in the foreground.

All of the lighting schemes are different ~ causing this to appear to be a hodgepodge. You don’t want that, you want to unite them through color, scale relationships, and lighting scheme to appear that they are all in the same environment. The temptations is to invent something allegorical to get around having to do some major construction work, but people will see through this.

The main question you have to ask is, what is the story / narrative here? Why are these figures in the same environment, and why are they posing as such?

You may have to invent a scheme and change the texture of the figures significantly. For example, the upcoming Narnia series reminds me of a scene in one of the books where there is a gallery of statues, frozen in place by the spell of the White Witch. You may want to invent some similar scheme, and turn these figure into statues…this would require also constructing an environment which is believable, no small task.

I think it’s cool to see you experimenting like this. I would just bear in mind that it will take a fair piece of work to get these to really work together believably.

Cheers,

I haven’t been here for a while, but I’ve looked through the topic and you all’ve done a great job :)))

I just took my old sketch, and doodled a bit with it in painter and PS

Katea,

Great to see you back! Just so you know, we’re on OFDW 005, but you are more than welcome to post in any OFDW for as long as you wish! I think this is looking really good ~ you have a nice painterly style going which is cool to see.

One thing I think you should reconsider (easy to do in Photoshop) is the relationship of the axes of the head and shoulders. There is something currently a bit funny there that would be fairly easy to correct.

Independently, I really like how you have painted the face ~ have you ever seen the work of Skip Liepke? This link was posted by Segvoia in the Favorite Artists thread, and I think you should check out his work:

Will you be working further on this?

Cheers,

Crassisco,

Not too bad! A shading tutorial I think you might like is Slux’s Shading Tutorial, which is on his Anatomy Thread here:

Anatomy Thread of Slux

I think you might quite like the way he breaks down his shading technique. Take a look when you get the chance.

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

#259

hi…
i took slux’s shadingtutorial seriously and i like the result.

#260

Crassisco,

Wow, nice work!!! I am thrilled that you used Slux’s tutorial to your best advantage…it makes me quite happy to see when people show real progress in their work as a result of something they’ve found on the Anatomy forum.

I think if you worked a bit more on the feet and the face, you would be in great shape! I quite like how you have carefully blocked in the figure, and been very careful about your proportions. Nice work so far! Do you plan to finish this piece?

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

#261

Finaly finished this drawing. Head proportions could be better (too late :)). I also don´t want to tweak this piece forever, so here it is:

#262

raptor|3D,

Great to see you post this piece! I agree that there are proportional problems, but, as I mentioned in your Anatomy Thread, I think it’s fine to move on. You have some nice work with the shading here, although I’ve also seen you do even better shading in other pieces. I think given the short amount of time, you have done a really nice job with this piece.

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

#263

Fairly new to the forum, I´m not quite sure if it´s OK to post WIP´s here, but I take my chances
Painter IX, Oils. 30 mins so far. Started with the detailing of the right arm so far. The rest is just blocked in.

#264

SaraD,

Yep, WIP is our thing here, so it’s absolutely ok to post WIP. Nice to see your post! Just so you know, we are on the last week of OFDW 006 ~ this is OFDW 004. You are more than welcome to post here (all OFDWs remain open indefinitely) but most folks post to the most current OFDW.

Here is the most current one:

NOW OPEN!!! OPEN FIGURE DRAWING WORKSHOP 006 with Ron Eyre and Rebecca Kimmel!!

We should start a new one next week.

Cheers,

Hi Rebeccak,
I know this is an “oldie”, but I liked the definitions of themuscles on this one, so I started with it:)
I´ll hopefully have time for the following ones as well…

#266

SaraD,

No worries then! Rock on! Checkin’ back later…
