Now OPEN!!! Open Figure Drawing Workshop with Hong Ly and Rebecca Kimmel 002

Bsmith,

Wow! I think this is a really big improvement over your first drawing! The lines are really clean, and it looks like you have some really nice Opposing Curves all throughout the torso and legs especially! That’s great.

I would suggest drawing the face (large) on a separate piece of paper, by itself. It is tough to get everything to work from the get~go (the reason I thank the digital medium) and practice drawing individual features can only help once you go back to the full figure.

If you have the time, try doing a portrait, and then I suggest giving the full drawing a second go. I think you are doing a great job, and practice can only help.

Cheers!

Crassisco: strong sketch, i feel the solidness of the body structure right away. it’s great that you try to interpret the fig in a more forward-turn perspective (but might want the head position to be adjusted w/ the perspective line too though). Agree with PSR about the rendering, or do you have any plan to overpaint it?

Samanthie: thanks! really, you should try it sometimes! it’s sure a lot of fun:thumbsup: ! (:argh: arrgh who am i kiddin? it’s sure more like a lot of ā€œpainā€! but hey no pain no gain, right?)

rebeccaK: wow, haven’t seen it for a while (lol), but it’s nice to be reminded every now and then of something great like this  . i too hope you’ll maintain your rendering quality for the rest of the body, pity if you’ll ruin such masterpiece just for the sake of hurry. (those toes still worry me, though:) ). keep updating please.

PSR: hey thanks, really appreciate it. And beautiful piece you’ve got! esp love the face, and everything which looks very natural. her ear is slightly off, imho, but again it’s a zerro-effect thing. really think you should find the time to paint it.

Spirit Dreamer: better than i’d dare to imagine! knowing what you’re capable to do, i think you’re on the right track!. more of my 2-cents, if it’s okay, is that in composition-wise i’d propose to add more space (canvas) at the top thus placing the main fig more in the interest area (imagine the Z in the pic). and you might want to fill those empty far-bg, with more forest feel. Again, beautiful piece and really hope you’ll find the will to finish it sooner!

Bsmith: that’s the spirit man!

thanks to rebeccak:thumbsup: , i took your good advice and started from a more mid-tones area. and you’re absolutely right, i’ve got more ā€œarsenalsā€ now at my disposal and more ready for this grey-scale war. so thanks a bunch!
no thanks to bad hangover and brain-dead :banghead: over the weekend, i progressed so slow w the wip.

tonight’s update. Any pointers, esp about the proportion before i kill myself on detailing, will be greatly appreciated.

b2dermawan,

Thanks for all these great comments! I will certainly take what you said to heart.

With respect to your piece, remember that your best friend in the ā€˜grayscale war’ is grayscale ~ because you can now easily correct drawing mistakes using black or gray, depending on whether you’re altering the bkgrd or the figure. Be careful that her hanging (right) leg does not become too large. These things are all easily correctable over time, however, so there’s no big need to feel that everything must be perfect from the start ~ that’s the beauty of digital painting.

Keep going, keep working that arsenal of grayscale at your disposal, and I think you will do a fabulous job!

Cheers!

heres the other one turned much better but i also spent much more time on it.

Kdeezy,

I sometimes have this problem on my home computer ~ I can’t see your image for some reason. I will be able to look at it tomorrow, though, from work. Thank you for posting!

Cheers,

Ok, I am going to have to call it quits on this figure, and start to concentrate on other things…it has been a total blast to work along with everyone, and I will definitely be doing the same when the CGWorkshop is over! Here is my last and final offer…there are many problems I know, but I’m going to have to leave it in it’s current 1950’s era colorized state and leave it at that for now…

Spirit Dreamer -> I like a lot your latest update… that made a little think of the Flemish school. Anyway, a very interesting search !

Bsmith -> some progress… good ! But when you said ā€œfastā€ā€¦ I don’t know it’s really a good way to progress more… to observe and take time, it’s certainly very important.

Kdeezy -> nothing much to crit… just waiting to discover more, good continuation Khaled.

Rebecca -> A new way for you, the B&W era is finish ? I like your 50’s… maybe the face appear a little bit too dark… but less disturbing in the horizontal Hi-Res version.

#388

Rebecca…Really like how this has turned out. I haven’t painted in grayscale and this has got me intriqued. The image does look alot like those old colorized photos.

b2dermawan…I’m going to give this grascale a try. I’ve got to get myself over to the 003 forum. I’m way behind. I like the new details you’ve added. Are you going to color yours at the end also or does it remain in grayscale?

Kdeezy… Looks great so far, like the way you have laid down the skin tones. I’ll keep checking back for updates.

Spirit Dreamer…wanted to say again…Your image is beautiful.

Great work everyone…this has been a great learning experience for me.

Kassjan,

Glad to have you on the forum!

Is the link supposed to go to an image, or was it supposed to go to the hurricane relief thing?

Thanks,

Hi Rebecca
Thanks for the push I needed it. Can’t wait to see your next painting.
Take care
Glenn

Hi b2dermawan
Couldn’t resist your suggestions and the temptation to take this piece further.
Kept all my stages so I haven’t lost anything in the process.
Your 2 cents is worth a million to me. Great advice.
Thanks for the help. I need it.
If you have any more I would be grateful to hear it.

Not sure about the ā€œZā€ you were talking about. But I went for it anyway.
Could you explain the ā€œZā€ concept, please?

Thanks again.
Glenn

Hi Lomog:
Flemmish school. Wow. I never thought I would hear that in my lifetime.
Stuck for words. So I’ll just say, ā€œThank you very very muchā€
Take care
Glenn

Hi Samanthie
Thank you.
Glenn
PS I just discovered a simple way to make beautiful ice.
If you are interested, let me know.

Spirit Dreamer,

The bkgrd is looking really great! The icicles are really cool, it’s a funny but interesting contrast between the warm (almost tropical) colors and the icicles hanging from the branches.

Are you sure I can’t convince you to adjust her chest? She has rather a bullish upper torso which is very thick at the top, but it’s a total judgement call and up to you as to whether or not you wish to change it.

Keep going, and I can’t wait to see this finished!

Cheers,

Thanks for the great feedback everyone, your suggestions were very helpful. Below is the finished product, there are a few things I can still see that need correcting, but it’s time to move on. I actually finished cleaning this up a few days ago, but I wanted to post with a real response. Of course, now the next workshop has started, so it’s a little late for that.

I hope everyone finishes their works in progress, however, as I’m interested in seeing the final results.

Rebecca: Thanks for the positive feedback, and I’ll definitely be posting some real media pieces in the near future.

Spirit Dreamer: I really love the close-up of your piece; great detail in her face. I think her torso looks a little top-heavy, particularly the area behind her shoulder seems thicker.

b2dermawan: Really nice blocking of the figure. I can’t wait to see more progress on it.

Kdeezy: Nice detail in her face, although her neck looks a little short. Great start, can’t wait to see more.

I’m sorry if I missed anyone. I’m looking forward to checking out the next workshop.

SevenMars,

WOW!!! I would say that your 4th post is definitely a success! Congrats on completing such an excellent piece! I think your proportions are really good, your rendering of the body excellent, and the hair is beautifully done. It’s good that the most careful rendering was done around her head and upper torso, as these are the focal points of the picture. I also like that the pose is not over~rendered or over~done ~ you seem to have struck a nice balance, so that the viewer is not hit over the head with the fact that this is a digital piece.

Great job on the face especially!

Great work in this thread! I really look forward to your participation in OFDW 003, and in the Anatomy Forum in general!

Cheers!

SevenMars…this came out beautifully! Wonderful job and I really like her face!

#396

Great job, SevenMars! Like the stylized hair. The face has an elf-like quality and a lot of personality.

#397

mmmh… SevenMars… Great stuff… and very great lesson for us… and surely for me…

#398

Ok, so I’m still working… here is an update… I don’t know how much time I will have to work more on this … so yeah… Oh and…that squirrel just kind of sneaked in

#399

mybutterflyiris,

Wow!!! I think this has really come along! ROFL, that squirrel is just too funny…I understand that the Challenge is taking up lots of time…but I think if you did one little tweak on this, it would be great ~ the right bottom leg just needs to be colored a bit more. Right now it’s a bit shiny and gray.

Great work, and thank you for participating!!! Hope to see more of your work here when the Challenge is over.

Cheers!

Thanks for the positive responses everyone, not to mention the warm welcome to the forum! I really enjoyed this workshop, and it was great to get some constructive feedback.

Rebecca: Thanks! I struggled with not over-working the piece, as I wanted to retain my own style of painting but also exploit the benefits of digital media. I definitely learned a lot about digital painting.

Samanthie, Allenatl, and Lemog: Thanks for the great feedback!

Mybutterflyiris: Beautiful color on her abdomen. I’m a little worried about the squirrel’s motives, though. :hmm:
