Figured, I’ll do another submission on this pose. I hope I have taken into consideration the areas that were pointed out.

PSR, thanks for those links. Wonderful artwork there.

Queensoul,

Worked up a little review for you. I think you are doing a good job so far, and there are a few areas that are looking really nice! The face is turning out really nice, and the chest area looks fantastic. It’s funny, because people can render boobs universally well, lol.

I desaturated your image to demonstrate that the areas which are working best are working best because of VALUE relationships. You can clearly see that the areas which are working best so far are the face and the chest. Look how nicely the values are relating to one another in these areas! Coincidence that these are reading the best? No!

One area which need work is where the inner thigh joins up near the base of the pelvis ~ there needs to be more differentiation there. Look closely at the photograph, and you will see what I mean. The other area is the ankle ~ right now, the ankle is sort of one undifferentiated glob connected funnily to the back of the leg ~ also, a close look at the photo will shed light on this complex area. I would also recommend lengthening both legs.

And…may I finally suggest working in black, white, and gray only? I think this helps artists tremendously to see ~ it’s an exercise I highly recommend (if you hadn’t noticed, lol! :))

Cheers Queensoul for all your hard work.

@queensoul: keep trying and painting and painting and painting, you will find a way to express you thoughts  i think you are on a good way . my painting is a little bit clichee but who cares gg.

@b2derwaman: yeah, you are right but i have some problems with background and light but i am working on it  i try to set the lights and the colourscheme bevore i am beginning to paint^^

hopefully you will update your greyscale painting soon. it looks promising but is till a little bit too bright.

@lemog: i am really happy you like the mood and find it creative :). i am still working on the insects. there will be some flying too. and i will paint over the legs and give them some motion. for now they are just the idea^^. btw your nice textures gave me the inspiration for the ornaments on the pedestral

@rebecca: i simply forgot to blend in the other layer for the skin, so it looks a little bit flat and the volumes are all the same. i came to the conclusion that you are right about the face and will stay with it.

wow, your piece came around really nice  but i still think she has got spikey knees, well one actually.

@samanthie: WOW… she looks as if she is illuminated from within. i am really looking forward to your tut. but i would suggest working on the hair a little bit longer.

@spirit dreamer: i really love your jungle background  i am really curious how this is goning to come along. the contrast between her golden skin and the cool background creates such a nice mood.

Thanks a bunch Becca.
Gonna fix it now

#366

Thank you, QS, you’re a sweetie for fixing Neb’s tut up.

Cheers!

#367

Thank you Llynna, I am working on the tut for hair today and I have been looking at the final version of her hair thinking the same thing. I think it was Lemog that suggested more volume on top. I’ll play around with it some more and see what I can do. Maybe it is a little rough too.

Queensoul, thank you very much.

#368

Becca I have a quick question. Am pretty sure you explained it somewhere and it went wooosh over my head. I notice that most of the time you make us lengthen the leg of the model, longer than the actual model’s leg. What is the reason for doing this? I think you explained it somewhere, I just cant find it anymore.
TA ( Thats thanks in advance) :stuck_out_tongue:

#369

queensoul, it is recommened to elongate the body a little while painting from life or photograph. its just the ideal we have today, it had changed over the times. now the figures are longer and slighter than some time before. when you draw the original proportions the figure often looks jolted or dumpy. well thats my expanation^^. i hope you dont mind it.

#370

Queensoul,

You’re quite right. It’s funny, because I usually crit the OFDW drawings/paintings based on what I see in front of me, and don’t always compare to the reference photo ~ after all, someone who hasn’t seen the photo will not be using that as a point of reference, and will only be wanting to make sense of what is before their eyes. So, my mistake there.

Here is a demo of finding proportions by referencing Negative Space ~ negative space being that age old concept of the space outside of the figure / object you are drawing. It is a basic concept, but one worth exploring, particularly when drawing something in perspective (as we are here, with the leg going back in space).

Notice how slim the ankle is, and how much smaller the leg appears to be the further it goes back in space (it is also tapering down to the ankle anyway). I think slimming the ankle significantly in your piece would help show the forced perspective, and justify the ‘shortness’ of the leg.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,

Yes thank you. Your explanation helps. I do notice it myself that when I draw according to the photo, it comes out looking like a Paul Gaugain drawing. It baffles me since I draw with numbers and its supposed to match. hehe, now I know.

#372

Queensoul,

Lol, I think the next best trick to try is tracing the image just to get a feel for the proportions ~ that’s the luxury of working from the photo, as a live model might object to being wrapped in vellum and stippled, lol!!!

Good luck with this, you’re doing a great job.

Cheers,

OK Rebecca
The rib cage and sunk in chest was bothering me too. But looked that way in the photo to me. So I diverted from photo and put some meat on her ribs, pushed up her chest muscles, expanded her lungs below her breast, made her breast a tiny bit fuller and enlarged her nipple a tiny bit. Now she looks healthier. I think, anyway.
The background and mood are the way I saw them in my mind’s eye last week. Think I’ll put it away for a month or so. So I can look at it in the future with a fresh perspective.
What do you think?
Looking forward to the next exercise. You’ve been a tremendous help to me on this one. Hope I haven’t disappointed you.
And thanks to everyone else for the great comments and even greater advice.
Take care
Glenn

Fixed previously mentioned problem areas  Hehe, I hope in the process I didnt go and create more problem areas. This exercise has been fun. I’ll jump to number 2 pose while waiting for comments and advise  That second pose has plenty of potential.

#375

Queensoul baby!

Can I convince you to work on this in black, white, and gray? Pleeze? I really think this would help. I think the main suggestion I would have would be to fill the entire bkgrd with a solid tone at 100% opacity ~ so as to completely concentrate on the Drawing of the figure. Right now the ecclectic~toned bkgrd is throwing things off value~wise unnecessarily. The benefit of filling in the bkgrd completely is that you don’t have to worry about it. And it makes it much simpler to correct the Drawing of the figure, as you have fewer values to work with.

So, my proposal to you: fill in the background first. Zen we will discuz ze anatomie.

EDIT: Ze bkgrd should be a nice dark gray eef you wiz work in desaturated mode like I sink iz best.

Cheers,

tsk, how can you be awake at this hour?!

Hokay I hear ya. I’ll do the gray thang

#377

Hello PSR:
Fantastic! Just had a chance this morning to check out the links you posted.
Alot of stuff I hadn’t seen before. Two of my favorite artists for sure.
The reclining nude with flowers on my web site was greatly influenced by Redon.
WOW, thank you much.
Greatly appreciate these.
Take care
Glenn

Llynna :
Really like your stuff
Nice imagination.
I think on your succubus painting you should refine and make smaller her raised forearm.
Looks too masculine at the moment.
Spoils an otherwise beautiful and very feminine figure.
Will make her hand fit better also.
Use shadow on receding volumes, thigh forearms etc to create illusion of deep space.
Look forward to seeing it completed.
Keep up the great work.
And will be talking to you soon, I hope.
Take care
Glenn

Hi Rebecca
Haven’t commented on your figure much, thought I’d better.
It’s beautifully stylized. Don’t know if it was intentional or not, but you captured the el Greco feel of this pose that was brought to my mind when I first saw the photo. Great mood and flow in your piece. I want to see more figures from you. Great style, Lady. Would also like to see how you work with colors in the figure. Maybe next time.
Have a great day
And thanks for everything
Glenn

Spirit Dreamer,

Thanks for your comments! Your thoughts are always appreciated.

I really like how your piece turned out…may I ask, are you finished with it? The colors are great, and I like the mysteriousness of the setting. If you are not finished, please feel free to post updates, even tho we are on to OFDW 003 ~ all OFDWs, as you know, remain open on a continuous basis.

Cheers!

er. I haven’t had anytime to do a digital painting…I started one but haven’t worked on it in days…anyways I just did this real fast.
