Not Sure Which Constraint Type I Need?

#1

Hi, I am following a tutorial here and if you scroll way down to the end of the page to: Figure 53. Zoom on the foot rig. There are 4 steps.

Step #2 says:
To “FootNull” - an IK solver constraint (target - “IK_toes”)

Blender 2.5 doesn’t call it an IK solver so I am wondering what would an IK Solver constraint be called in Blender 2.5?

Which Constraint would it be:

• Inverse Kinematics
• Spline IK

#2

You want the inverse Kinematics constraint. That’s what the IK stands for.

Thanks Felix,

Ok, I have made the bones and then added the constraints following the 4 steps at the bottom of the tutorial. The problem is when I add the constraints the bones moved all over the place. Is this normal or have I done something wrong?

  1. To the bone “Toes” add a “Copy Location” constraint with (target - bone “IK_toes”)
  2. To “FootNull” - add an “IK Constraint” (target - “IK_toes”)
  3. To “Foot” - add a “Copy Location” constraint (target - bone “LegNull”)
  4. To “LegNull” - add an “IK Constraint” (target - “IK_heel”)

I think the chain length for that is 1?.. That pretty much happens when you first add an ik constraint, setting the chain length should fix it.

Tob’s foot rigging video tutorial is probably easier to follow

Thanks Divine that worked.

One other problem I’ve encountered

In the tutorial when I select 2 bones it asks me to parent them and select “Keep Offset”, but when I select (CTRL + P) to parent the 2 bones I don’t have “Keep Offset” as an option but these options. Is Keep Offset only in 2.49?

Set Parent To
Object
Armature Deform
• With Empty Weights
• With Envelope Weighs
• With Automatic Weights
Bone

+1.
Tob’s foot rigging videos are great.

Are you in edit mode? “Keep Offset” is still in 2.5 but you must be in Edit mode, it will not work if you are in Pose mode.
