So when I apply a normal map, created in xNormal from a hi-res model, I’m getting ridges along the edges of the polygons, as seen below. Any one have any idea what’s causing this?

Thanks for your reply. It’s all real time, so there shouldn’t be any smoothing going on. Someone I emailed for help advised me to change the settings in xNormal from “use exported normals” to “use average normals” which does seem to fix it, though I couldn’t explain the why of it.
It sounds like you have a disparity between the surface normals in your 3d package and the exported obj. In Maya these would be the hard and soft edges and in Max the smoothing groups. You may have not exported the surface normals into your objs at all, or they are not matching for some reason.
