Normal mapping Polycount..suggestions?

I am working on my demo reel (as a modeller, and texture artist), and I am normal mapping a character.
I am living in Canada, and want to apply to companies based there, such as Montreal, Edmonton, etc.

I need to show off polycounts for consoles (maybe computer?)

What should my low-poly count for the character be?
I know the main characters from Jade Empire are running up to 5000 polys.
But this isn’t the norm.
If I’m making a demo reel, what should my poly count be?
2000?

It changes all the time, and is always job-dependant anyway. I’ve done 300 tri characters for RTS games all the way up to several-thousand tri people for FPS games. I think that the skill you want to be showing with this is being able to stick to a budget. Maybe do a few? A 2500 tri one, a 5000 tri one, and a 7500 tri one? HL2 is pushing 7500 at the moment, but I expect that to shoot up again in the near future the way things are going.
