You might be able to hack something with color range selection and masks and stuff. It’d probably be hard and suck. No reflection on your skills though.

Yes, but it takes a slightly different approach, being more akin to bump mapping.

  1. convert your normal map to a bump map (greyscale)
  2. save the bumpmap info into a new channel
  3. either use an existing layer (for example, with a texture), or create a new layer with some colour.
  4. choose FILTER–>RENDER–>Lighting Effects
  5. at the very bottom select the channel you wish to use as a bump
  6. adjust light settings and height settings.
  7. click OK and watch the magic.

It may take some trial and error (as well as adjusting the bump map) to get the effect you are after.

try looking at just one channel and shifting the hue for light direction before seperating it out into a greyscale channel if that makes any sense.

Silly me, I completely forgot about Photoshop CS4 Extended - you can import any 3d object, or make your own, create and apply bump and normal maps, right inside Photoshop, combine objects together, render them… the sky is the limit. And change the lighting on the fly! Photoshop out-performs Normality.
