Non-roll shoulder setup

#16

now y didnt i think of that!! lol… very nice idea u got here mate!.. thanx for sharing

#17

Why did you remove the video? The scenes don’t work either …

Please reupload

#18

Hi victor,

Thanks for sharing but unfortunately I cant seem to download any of these files… can someone kind enough to mirror them?? thanks

#19

I see, I see - this is cool man. In max you can do the same with a WSM path deformer, driven by a ik handle twist value - you completely lsolate the twisting to control it how you want. You could do the same in both maya and max, with a pole-vector driven bone, (thats your independance) driving a a bone or two’s average twist.

#20

eek or luvictu, would some of you guys want to record in camtasia(video says it all) how to do both:

  1. counter-rotation

  2. traditional roll-bone system

I am baging you guys pleaseeeee,please …

#21

I too am interested in the no roll shoulder setup. Your link for that video does not work. Can you repost it please?

Thanks

#22

Hi guys, the link does not work since I deleted it since this thread seemed to be ended a long time ago. Several days ago I recovered the maya scene and uploaded it as a .rar file.
This file has been available since 09/17 so it was only a matter of being aware that it was no longer a .mb file but a .rar file.
Anyway

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate in dropping a post.
Cheers!

Hello,

thanks for the upload. It is saved in Maya 8.5 and I am using Maya 7.0. I opened the ascii file and changed the version. Were you using any features from Maya 8.5 that is required?

I would like to know if you have the video available

nonrollshoulder.mov

I would like to understand all the features of this setup.

Thanks for sharing by the way

#24

I’m sorry about the 8.5 version, I have had to recover the scene and save it again. Hoped that saving it in ascii you could do the editing thing in order to open it in older versions

Regarding the video, the .mov file was also deleted and I should make the capture again. But I have to say that the only feature contained in this scene is in the fact that you can use the elbow pole vector and see how the mesh does not roll/twist.

#25

I was able to open the file in Maya 7. I moved the elbow control and I saw it works properly. I was wondering, if you don’t mind, if you can re-capture and breifly explain how you set it up. It would be quicker than trying to reverse engineering it

Thanks for your replies.

#26

I can’t wait to see the video.

Start from empty scene and make the whole setup.

Waiting for video :bounce:

#27

Hey guys, this kind of setup is used only for cartoony rigs or can be usefull for humans too?

#28

I always love seeing new and inventive ways of tackeling problems like this. Nice job Victor. I’ve only had a few spare moments to look at the rig and I think I understand why you did everything the way you did it, but for the sake of clarity would you mind explaining why you chose to use Ik instead of just aim constraints?

#29

Frumsylgu, there’s no specific reason for using Ik instead of just aim constraints. I think the result is exactly the same with both methods.

#30

Frumsylgu, there’ just one small reason for using Ik instead of just aim constraints. Although the result is exactly the same using both methods, the IK handle keeps the rotations of the roll bone unlocked (using aim constraint locks the rot channels) and then we can move the ik handle (so therefore we can rotate the roll bone) to an offset pose in order to make secondary animation for the sleeve. Obviously it could be done also with the offset channels of the aim constraint, but with the ik handle is quite more intuitive.
Cheers!

#31

is that video coming or not?pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeee man

#32

Dude! Respect someones time. He’s been more than generous doing what he’s already shown us. The rest is up to you. You can’t keep pestering him to spoon feed you, can you?

No offense. But jeez…Give the guy a break. Be matured

#33

does anybody have any copies of the files that victor uploaded in his website. all i’m getting are dead links. can anyone here post mirrors for the files. thank you…

#34

Hi guys, sorry for being out of the thread for so long. I removed the original files some time ago when I changed my web site, and to be honest those were like “beta” rigs and didn’t work as well as the final version I used on the businessman rig.
I’m preparing a extensive tutorial about how to build the non-roll shoulder setup, and hope it´s going to be finished and available in my site in a few days. Hope this is going to be helpful for you all!
Keep u updated.Cheers!

#35

in the businessman rig the hand has only one control for the translation and rotation and it has an attribute that allows it to follow the head, torso and the hips. does anyone here knows the concept behind the rig and how to do a similar rig? tnx.
