PROP 101 - UGAC Mini challenge

Choose one of the following:

Character used prop [melee weapon, gun, ornament, etc]
Vehicle used prop [mounted gun, gas cans, tires, etc]
Environment used prop [garbage bin, nuclear device, taco stand, etc]

ONLY model the prop. Sketches of what the prop belongs to will be enough to sell the PROP. FOCUS ON THE PROP.

Post concept sketches, model progress screens and final render with accomanying texture sheet…

NOW…let’s decide on subject matter…one subject/genre to cover all 3 possible directions…

Steampunk? 1950’s rertro? Fantasy? Viking? Pirate? Ancient Greek?

once we have a theme I will spec oly count and texture res and create a new thread…choose an end date…as well as post frontpage PLUG

#62

I vote for “realistic/cinematic” so I can do the gun for my Deep Rising guy  but here are some other ideas:

1 - Jungle/overgrown
2 - Harsh planet
3 - Horror

#63

jungle/overgrown rainforest idea is neat and not too common a theme…I like that one…

#64

some refs i shot last year for a diff. project

#65

Sounds great to me too.

#66

a jungle in the future theme with a wiff of pirateness about it? ARR!

i start a junior prop artist jobby next week.

WOOT. this may be good practise.

#67

OK here are some ideas:

-Post apocalyptic
-Medieval
-WWI
-WWII
-Imperialist era (around the time of the Napoleonic Wars)
-Naval Battles
-Fantasy (Atlantis, UFO, ect.)
-Gothic
-Sports

And I also have a small question.
* Will we be able to enter in more than one area?
* Is there a limit to how many entries we can summit in any one section?

PS: I like the jungle/overgrown rainforest idea!

#68

I vote for “Ancient Geek”

But the rainforest thing sounds good too.

#69

any updates?

i’d be interested in participating.

#70

just an idea for a prize, how about a subscription to the new CGSociety. I know that some people here already have it, but many do not. Just a suggestion, I’ll play for free if that is the case.

#71

My idea was to make characters for a “new” Clayfighter game. The character could be an already establish combatant from the games or a character from something else that fits into the world of Clayfighter, or an original character that fit. The only stipulation would be that the textures look like the character is made out of clay.

If the winner isn’t going to pick the next contest anymore, I think we could expand the contest beyond one winner. Maybe have a best character, best background, best prop all fitting into one theme. Then people who prefer doing one type of asset isn’t excluded.

#72

so, we’re waiting till after E3 to do the next GAC?

I honestly think we don’t need prizes, we just need a simple concept, previous challenges that didn’t require any real design work (classic viideo game characters or movie characters) seemed to draw a lot of activity/attention. Maybe we should go back to something like that?

anywho…a mini GAC sounds like a good idea.

#73

Ya, it sounds like its going that way

We will start up the next UGAC after E3, and until then there will be an mini-challenge

But it seems like the Idea is slowing down

:surprised(not again!)

#74

I will announce the mini challenge tomorrow…posting the rules and timeline…explain the date for the full comp after E3…and plug it all on the front page.

sooooo…with the announcement tomorrow…you all have until 9am PST to fire off on themes for the mini challenge…we will lean towards the most popular theme you talk about in this thread…

sound good? yes? no? if no, too bad cause we need to get SOMETHING underway! I am putting my foot down! lol

so, what theme?

#75

Awesome Bent. Thanks for coming through! Can’t wait till tomorrow.
I will see if I can think of some more themes for the challenge and post later tonight when I get home!
:bounce:

#76

Sounds good to me. I don’t think we need prizes though.

#77

Jungle/overgrown still sounds like a great theme to me.

#78

It is different, but I don’t think the scope is very big, ‘tree’ is about the only thing that springs to mind at the moment, or maybe a parrot.

If you picked something like, 1950’s, or anoher time-period, the scope increases greatly.

#79

I was thinking that with the overgrown part you could basically make anything that has been taken over by plants. I was thinking something like this:
http://www.riverworld.bcit.ca/images/galleries/mekong/images/Mekong-5.jpg
http://www.enderzero.net/seasia/pics/angkor_taprohm10.jpg
http://faculty.chi.devry.edu/gharris/sabbatical2001/Overgrown.jpg
http://vagabondboots.com/images/home/360/ayuthaya.jpg

But obviously on a much smaller scale to fit the rules of the competition. You could also make some exotic plants (I can think of dozens of variations), tree stumps or logs covered by other plants, an amo crate that has been enveloped by the tree roots, a broken down tank covered in plants with a flower blooming from the barrel, a moss covered statue, etc.
