NewRender of Old tutorial model

#1

Hey guys,
so even though there is a lot of talk about the new EIM,
I’m still very excited about MOI3d.
I pulled out some images of Barry Bermans Detanator key chain model and
made my own version in MOI3d.
the export process from Moi to transporter to EI was pretty painless:)

Here’s an image

Here is a screencap from inside MOI3d

looks great.

Too bad the MoI guy won’t make a mac version. His loss, we’ll have EIM back, and also ViaCAD

#6

Its not that he WON’T make a mac version, he has said many times at the MOI3d page that he just does not have the resources or man power to port a mac version right now.

If the software is well recieved once it leaves beta, I bet he would port a mac version.

Would MOI work on WINE for Mac (http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/)?

#8

Hmm, I have no idea if it would work.
the compatible software list mentions some computer games and
photoshop applications, so it might be able to handle 3d modeling tools.

I will post over at the moi forum to see if anyone has any experience.

Hey guys,
here is the reply from the MOI3d guy, Michael Gibson:

Hi Mike, I don’t think that WINE supports enough Windows functionality to enable MoI to run.

If you have an Intel Mac, it is possible to run it by using Apple’s Boot Camp system to install Windows on to the Mac so that you have the option to start either Mac OS or Windows when you turn the machine on. That will definitely work.

Also some people have reported some success with the latest beta version of Parallels, for running MoI more directly inside the Mac OS.

What features does Moi have that EIM doesn’t- or what does it do better?

Well, I’m not sure I can pin that down off hand.
Moi3d is still in beta, but I believe that this is the last or 2nd to last
beta version before it launches.
That being said, Moi3d is very forgiving compared to what we had in EIM.
Rounding tools are very very reliable and if you get solids modeling, it should be
very easy to grasp.

The UI is very light compared to EIM, but I have not noticed anything missing or lacking
yet. The problem with Moi3d is that there is not project list, only a hide/unhide button when you want to show the pieces you are working on when things get a further on a model you’re working on.

All this being said, I was never able to even complete Barry Bermans tutorial in EIM as
tools just wouldnt work as described in his steps, but I finished the model in under 2 hours
in MOI3d…

EIM’s method of organizing a scene - the layers wndow with folders is actually quite unique for modelers. Shocking actually.

I don’t know every modeler, by any means, but most just offer something similar to MOI or Rhino/ViaCad where you can have objects on seperate layers but can’t see into the layer and see what is actually there.

I still can’t believe this lack of visual feedback - I guess it all originated with modelers on the PC where the visual aspect wasn’t available/needed? Even Max didn’t have any layers organization just a few upgrades ago.

My little playing around with MOI I was pleasantly surprised at it’s quad tess. meshing for export…still not SubD friendly but very neat and tidy in comparison to many modelers.

#13

Thanks 3D Artz.
I guess EIM is unique in its layers feature- for a nurbs modeller that is… Pity it doesn’t all work predictably or easily. Maybe you (Paul) should publish all the secrets…

#14

I just grabbed the beta and installed it on latest version of VMWare on my Intel iMac. I had to enable the “Advanced Graphics Mode”, which is essentially Direct X emuation. It seems to run just fine.

I have never used this app, and I haven’t loaded anything complex, so I can’t attest to speed, but the interface feels at least usable.

Hey Mike,

maybe try adding a box and cutting it up via booleans with a few shapes.
then give it a rounding test.

that might give us a good indication…
thanks for testing it out thus far

Yeah… only that many of us are still using PowerPC macs. I’m still extremely pleased with my G5s, I don’t see myself getting an intel mac soon, not yet. So this solution is not mac friendly by any means, it’s only somewhat Macintel friendly.

I actually exchanged a few words with the developer of MoI a long time ago. It’s more about the interface, how it works, than anything else, the reason why he won’t port it to the mac. It’s a sad excuse in my opinion. But hopefully he will change his mind sometime in the near (or at least no so distant) future, seems like a fun solids app.

But again, we do have ViaCAD, and we’ll have EIM again soon so… MoI looses my attention for the time being.

Joel, I have 5 power tower pro machine’s from powercomputing. they all still work great. But
I cant use them for much(file server, play an old version of Unreal Tourney:) ). All I can say is that Technology cares not about its parents.
Not that your g5’s are dated in a time sense, but apple is seeing to it that they are.

#18

Jeez, you’re going back a bit… I had a Power Tower ‘Pro’- my boss bought me to use at home. 200Mhz as I remember and the fastest Mac out- for a very short period.

#19

Yah… I had a Umax S900L. Loved that machine.

#20

I had one of those too.
It was blazing fast at 150Mhz!

We had some quad processor Daystar Genesis machines in the office too.
If I remember correctly, MP Camera would scream through rendering smoke/fog.
