Dissent can be productive. It’s how we dissent that determines if it’s productive.
I think that most of us who use messiah feel that if it just had a couple of more things (name your issue…hair or whatever), it would be taken more seriously by “main” studios or some vast majority of 3D pros, and that would mean that finally they see what we see in this great tool called messiah.
Probably similar to those of us who are “old” LW guys. It used to drive me up a wall when all the major tv stuff was done(actually, ALL the stuff), on a budget and weekly timeframe, in LW and get little or no “recognition” as quality package. Yes, Fred is right…everyone will always want and expect “more”. And yes, an artist can make amazing things with the tools they have at hand…not being able to wait for the tools to come. I believe Ray Harryhausen did amazing things with metal, rubber, and no tweening software. I still remember the fun of lining up complex meshed characters (there were no simple ones) before open gl, and also the “fun” of animating before we had IK. Of course no one wants to go back, and we found ways to get around the limitations.
At the same time, we want/expect our tools to keep advancing and expanding. When I was first waiting impatiently for messiah to break, I would call, and Alan would say, “Not yet. It’s like soup…when it’s ready…” I certainly believe all of PMG believes they have a great tool that they have made for us and WANT to see it continue to grow. I was not disappointed in that first stage of trusting them, when messiah finally arrived (even in it’s initial plug-in form). So I trust them STILL, that a full point release is probably not far down the road. It will always be “too far” for us on the user end. And we are an impatient lot, because, as artists, everytime they give us some great feature, we see the new horizon that we hope comes next.
Yes, we need some way to address hair, and there are issues others have that might help integrate messiah into “professional” major studio pipelines, etc. And yes, I want it all now, just like everyone else. I’m also going on what they’ve delivered so far, and trust/expect that they will continue. No reason to expect otherwise. And yes, it would be nice, if Fred, or someone, would have a monthly update or such. I found that while I was slaving furiously aware on a job, the client had no comfort level or knowledge about how hard I and my employees were working unless I made that call to assure them. I expected that they knew me and my work well enough to know that. But they need updates and assurances. I think our community is similar.
Best,
Rick
