New Updates Available!!! (2.5 & 5.5 + Demo)

Now I’m really pissed! Ha ha ha…just kidding. I wasn’t really upset, I just think it’s wacky that we have to bother Taron to learn this software.
I don’t think they need PR to sell more seats. We’d like instructional material to support the current users first! Anyway, people are probably tired of reading the same thing over and over, so I’ll stop there.
Drop me a line and let me know what you’re up to these days…

Peace

Okay shane, you scare me sometimes when you raise your voice like that on cgtalk. Can you PM me your email address. I wanted a copy of your reel so I have it on file.

Shane! well i hope the film, I worked on with Chris, Wegg, Taron and Ron will soon be released. The rigging in messiah is what’s amazing. We had 250 VFX shots in film which really only was supposed to have 30. I contact taron because of my relationship with him, he’s my best friend. It just happens he finds it through his kindness to help me out.
" Dammit JIM! I’m Concept Designer NOT VISUAL EFFECTS ARTIST!"

I think Fred, Fori and Taron should give the users what they are asking for in regards to the simple request. Taron made one video last year which was awesome on rigging. anyone have a link for that.

#123

you mean to up it ? or you mean it was posted here before? , either way, me wants

Fred: One of my best friends worked on Ant Bully by DNA and messiah seems to be entirely gone from their pipeline. I was sorry to hear that. Like many others they moved on.

I don’t think people wait forever, but use what’s available instead.

But it is pmGs choice. If you guys are happy with how messiah develops and is used in the industry, it is all cool, nothing needs to be changed in that case…

Carpe Diem.

#126

They moved on for a couple of reasons, the main one of which was that they wanted to streamline production but messiah:studio wasn’t going to be ready in time (we had several meetings with them about it). Another one was that someone there who came in and was from a Maya background pushed hard for Maya at that same time.

Also, more than 50% of our users are Maya users. That says a lot about Maya AND about messiah, don’t you think?

But it is pmGs choice. If you guys are happy with how messiah develops and is used in the industry, it is all cool, nothing needs to be changed in that case…

Carpe Diem.
Talented people do amazing things with messiah. And they’ve been doing it for over six years. We work with those people to improve messiah.

Fred

Great

actually you (PMG) can get a free java script and make a java based irc portal right on the PMG website, allowing people to login directly through the site without having to install anything.

and as far as talented people go. I guess im not talented enough to use messiah to achieve SBD or hair. Hmm, it also seems that taron isnt talented for that either??

i know in maya you give me a simulation you want and ill do it. Hair is a walk in the park, either with poly chains or with guides. even saquach, with its 1870s interface can get it done…

I like the seaquest example, although all i saw there are naked dolphins, hard ships, and not a follicle of hair in sight. lol. that was the 20th century, this is the 21st

anyway, i beat the same drum. on the side of this drum is a plaque and it reads: While messiah is amazing for rigging and animating, not all characters are bald and naked. Luckily you can always buy maya for 7k (or get your company to do it) and use it only to do hair and cloth for messiah! Nevermind the fact that messiah kinda gets redundant at this point.

#129

hey now, how about people with an aero/nautical background? Heading pitch bank… Makes perfect sense. Im no pilot or semen but i really dont think there is anything wrong with HPB

it also serves to delineate that you are talking about a rotational channel rather then translational.

but thats just my cent.

#130

My point is that it’s good to follow the 3D-standard!:deal:
Else we could also have a manipulator with right, left, up, back and so on…

#131

honestly i dont have a problem with that either.

when saomeone tells me i want keys on XYZ i know immediatelly the person wants movement channels.

when i hear i want HPB i know right away we are talking about rotations.

if its XYZ for both, you can get confused. Even in curve editor where you see lots of curves, the second you see its an H curve you know right away its a rotational channel. etc.

little things like this is what makes messiah better to animate with. anyway for me id like this as an option because mine would be on the original setting.

#132

Things are and should be changing to the standars but not the software ones but the ones used on the real world, haven’t yet a seen a director asking to ratate the real world camera in Y., so how about pan, tilt, bank? hehehe , any way having HPB is way better than using XYZ for rotation.

#133

I like the HPB but I think new users would feel more welcome if they recognize the main-tool?
Fred I understand… PMG can’t have it easy!:arteest:

That’s why discussing about messiah with Fred is the most useless thing next to discussing the existence of god with a Jehovah’s witness. He’s right anyway, no matter what.
Circular reasoning makes for a great shiny mirroring sphere where you’re sitting in the middle and enjoy the view of yourself. He’s really good at that.

I have no idea why he is working in the CG industry though, with that kind of wisdoms to share.

Back to my apparently-not-talented-enough-for-messiah cave it is I fear … >LOL<

:stuck_out_tongue:

Thomas: Really…no need to snipe at Fred…serves no purpose…and lacks professionalism.
Comment on the software; leave out the jabs. (Please.)

Controllers: I like the HPB. It always made logical sense to me. Rotating on x,y,z seems odd, and have to stop and think which access is which. The heading, pitch, and bank is so easy once it’s explained that it has never been a problem for me.

Last, maybe we should just ask, instead of jab. Fred, is hair a priority of any sort, and when might we se it in messiah? Or is there development with an outside source to make it available in messiah?

Best,
Rick

#136

oooh - so I proved even more unworthy >LOL<

Just let me out of here - but hey, where’s that door?

“I’m an unworthy, unprofessional, non-talented, whiny bitch” mutter mutter…

Oh how sad that makes me >LOL<

#137

How did we get back to this? It was only 2 or 3 months ago where the discussion was so constructive.

And the software started reflecting this immediately - we have an update, some things have been added - like my long-requested ctrl-Nr. channel toggle - a big time saver… The edit sphere has been adressed. Perhaps not to everyone’s liking - but…

why has this gotten so personal? Makes me want to become a dentist.

Dissent can be productive. It’s how we dissent that determines if it’s productive.

I think that most of us who use messiah feel that if it just had a couple of more things (name your issue…hair or whatever), it would be taken more seriously by “main” studios or some vast majority of 3D pros, and that would mean that finally they see what we see in this great tool called messiah.

Probably similar to those of us who are “old” LW guys. It used to drive me up a wall when all the major tv stuff was done(actually, ALL the stuff), on a budget and weekly timeframe, in LW and get little or no “recognition” as quality package. Yes, Fred is right…everyone will always want and expect “more”. And yes, an artist can make amazing things with the tools they have at hand…not being able to wait for the tools to come. I believe Ray Harryhausen did amazing things with metal, rubber, and no tweening software. I still remember the fun of lining up complex meshed characters (there were no simple ones) before open gl, and also the “fun” of animating before we had IK. Of course no one wants to go back, and we found ways to get around the limitations.

At the same time, we want/expect our tools to keep advancing and expanding. When I was first waiting impatiently for messiah to break, I would call, and Alan would say, “Not yet. It’s like soup…when it’s ready…” I certainly believe all of PMG believes they have a great tool that they have made for us and WANT to see it continue to grow. I was not disappointed in that first stage of trusting them, when messiah finally arrived (even in it’s initial plug-in form). So I trust them STILL, that a full point release is probably not far down the road. It will always be “too far” for us on the user end. And we are an impatient lot, because, as artists, everytime they give us some great feature, we see the new horizon that we hope comes next.

Yes, we need some way to address hair, and there are issues others have that might help integrate messiah into “professional” major studio pipelines, etc. And yes, I want it all now, just like everyone else. I’m also going on what they’ve delivered so far, and trust/expect that they will continue. No reason to expect otherwise. And yes, it would be nice, if Fred, or someone, would have a monthly update or such. I found that while I was slaving furiously aware on a job, the client had no comfort level or knowledge about how hard I and my employees were working unless I made that call to assure them. I expected that they knew me and my work well enough to know that. But they need updates and assurances. I think our community is similar.

Best,
Rick

Isn’t one dentist in the community enough? >LOL<

Back on topic in an almost positive way:

Soft Transparency seems to have been fixed in 2.5 (before you got an object without any transparency when you enabled it). It is implemented differently than I had hoped though, so it doesn’t work out of the box with EasyGlass’ Absorption.
(I have never seen it working before, so I couldn’t account for it)

Example without absorption: (Sphere inside a sphere)

And with absorption:

Notice the hard edge of the inner sphere in the second example (sorry for the bad image quality, but rendering this takes ages).
Diffuse Thickness, Distance and also Absorption are on my list anyway quite at the top, so it will happen as soon as I find the time and spirit to go back to messiah.
I had hoped to be able to use the same algorithms as messiah does interrnally to get a perfect match, but the SDK hasn’t changed with 2.5 and those things are still unaccessible.

Well, I will see what I can come up with - it will be semi-optimal at best.

Cheers,

I still think, some kind of list item/element coloration, would be a nice feature, and probubly not a real big head scratcher to figure out.

Outside of creating an armature, or script/hotkey setup, is there a way to be able to diminish the amount of stuff that is visible in the item list? Im working with my first real attempt at a biped rig in studio, and have done simple animation so far, and I can see that once I add hand/head bones and more complexity, the list will be even larger than it is now. I’m already sliding up and down to view the list as I animate. Is that a functionality of groups? Or is armatures the only way to do that right now?

Is there a way to change the color of a mesh or have different bone colors? Those would be nice too, I use both of those things in LW.

Thanks.
