Always free.

FREEDOM!!!

Blender is a decent all-around free 3d app and does a decent job with many things… but Wings is a Modeler only and therefore is great at what it does… begin flaming blender users.

As a matter of fact, you can’t get much freer than Wings or blender.
I think they’re both free enough, without having read the lisence for the both,
that you can make changes to the code, change the name of the app,
and then charge money for “your” app,
as long as you make sure to give your changes back the original authors,
and that everyone that pays for the app can also get the entire source, which also has to be free.

So,no matter what happens, you can’t really get rid of something like that once it’s out
And I guess someone could make like a Wings++ and charge for the binaries,
but the source would still be free.

what will occur in the even that iZware or whatever it is now comes back online? Wings certainly has a few rather obvious roots from their software.

#5

Not sure about the IZware factor, but I think that Wings is based on the Nendo/Mirai workflow and architecture, but not based off of their code. As far as I know if it has no part of their code, then their should be no effect from IZwares phoenix like resurrection.

If Mirai makes a come back, I think a lot of Wings users will BUY IT.

I know there are quite a few Wings users who have paid for Lightwave, Max, Maya and even XSI, but use Wings for modelling.

They’re not using Wings because its free (not that we’re complaining about the price).

#7

I really doubt a lot will buy Mirai …

Unless the price comes way way down from $7000

Even $1000 would be way to much.

If i had the money i would buy Mirai for the $5000 they were charging, definitely. But saying its not worth $1000 :surprised. That software is still used by several industry leaders, including Bay Raitt (because famous names add weight  ). Have you seen Ambient Whispers vid where he shows the animation tools? That is some powerful stuff with a very efficient workflow. The only reason i might agree with you is because the company hasnt said a word in 4 years. But if they do re-emerge from whatever hole they’ve been hiding in with an updated Mirai (1.5 was apparently used in LOTR), then they will indeed be a competing force.

Simply imagine the ease of Wings with some added functionality, applied not only to modeling but to animation, and texturing:drool:

I really doubt a lot will buy Mirai …

What I meant is … OK … maybe if you are a pro … but I don’t think that would constitute “A Lot”.

The majority of people on these forums are not pros … at least the ones that post a lot. They are just darn serious hobbiests who very often are willing to use whatever gets the job done the cheapest.

JMHO.

I’m no pro… yet

but as a learner i would buy an academic version of mirai when a new version comes to fruition (sp?). I own an acedemic XSI and use wings & XSI for modeling in conjuction with one another. I can see Mirai fitting in to my workflow (especially if it handles larger models that wings cannot handle atm).

There are A LOT more wings users than just the people on these forums.
