New to wings.. severl questions..

Okay, first off, hello. Everything that I’ve seen from you guys is incredible!

Now, some questions…

  1. What’s the best way for adding faces to an object without changing the shape of the object?

  2. How would one go about creating a hole in an object in the shape of another shape?

  3. What is beveling and when is it used?

  4. In one of my recent projects involved bending an elongatedcube to create a magazine? How would I go about doing this?

  5. In my time here I’ve seen alot of curved surfaces (mostly faces) what is the technique that is being used?

  1. theres a bajillion ways. just experiment, wich way alll depends on the way your manipulating the object

  2. that would be booleans and sadly wings doesnt support that

  3. experiment with it. all you have to do is click it to find out and press undo if you dont like it.

  4. youve got alot to learn. just play around with cutting the edges and moving selected edges and faces and virtices

  5. the big secret to that is to have a bunch of flat surfaces in an arrangement that only appears to be curved. in 3d there still is yet to be such thing as a true curved surface

UMG- Youre asking a lot of very basic questions about modeling that you should really read up on on your own. Im not trying to push you off, nor is anyone here, but you should do a little research on your own about what boxmodeling is, because you cant expect people here to explain basic concepts that you can easily find in the official manual. Do the dog house tutorial in the official manual, thats how I started out, it will teach the basics and get you up and running.

  1. What’s the best way for adding faces to an object without changing the shape of the object?
RTFM and do Pauljs75’s car tutorial

  2. How would one go about creating a hole in an object in the shape of another shape?
Read Puzzeled Paul’s website. PP has thee best site for advanced Wings use.

  3. What is beveling and when is it used?
RTFM and do the dog house tutorial

  4. In one of my recent projects involved bending an elongatedcube to create a magazine? How would I go about doing this?
I could suggest many many ways of going about it, but that wont help. The fun of boxmodeling is trying new approaches and combinations of techniques to achieve what you want.

  5. In my time here I’ve seen alot of curved surfaces (mostly faces) what is the technique that is being used?
No you have never ever seen curved surfaces in Wings. That look is achieved by the default smoothing shader. Wings always calculates shapes as triangles. Even if you have a multi-sided polygon, it is actually made out of triangles within Wings.

You should also take Phrenzys suggestion and download 3DBuzz videos. I recommend you download the 3Dsmax videos, because Max handles polygons more as shapes to be acted apon by modifiers, and it also has NURBs which might be a type of modeling more to your liking. Wings is a boxmodeler, dont be disappointed if it doesnt do everything you want. Make yourself aware of all the choices.

Fairly application-agnostic overview of various modeling techniques with a focus on sub-division (box) modeling:

^^^read what they said^^^ its all great stuff

but to honest, forums can be very difficult to learn wings3d from. The best way to learn it all is to check out some tutorials and just experiment like crazy… heres a link from me, try the wings3d tutorials on the site: http://www.davidbrinnen.com/tutorials.html
you probably wont get the answers to the specific questions you asked…but you’ll get an idea of Wings’s functions, what they do, and how to access them. These tutorials sure helped me, and if you need more, just Google it up–there are soooooooo many out there.

well, enjoy

the tutorial that made me understand wings3d not modelling in general was over at 3d-palace.

The guitar tutorial is the best wings3d series outthere.
