New to Wings 3D... Extrude edge?

#1

Just started trying out this program, and I’m loving it so far. But I have a small problem:
Is there any way to extrude the edge as a plane, more like it works in Maya? I’m making a fish, and wanted it for fins(alphamapped planes). I couldn’t even find an option to place a plane as a basic shape. I got one fin properly, but only after merging vertexes and splitting edges after extruding the edge. There must be an easier way?

No.

No poly by poly modelling in Wings3D(this ould be too nice), Boxmodelling only, so you cant extrude single edges properly.

Hm… That’s annoying >_<
Especially since it apparently can handle it, as I created one fin. Guess I’ll have to make them all that way then

Edit: Wait, it dosn’t work all that well… It gets a bit glitchy, nevermind. I’ll fix the planes in Blender then.

Everything you model in wings, must have a thickness. You can however select an edge press extrude- now don’t move the mouse- instead press the +/- keys to change the radius of the extrusion.

Optigon.

However, you can create flat objects by collapsing the edges along the width of the object, thus leaving 2 planes facing opposite directions. Just keep in mind that there are actually 2 faces on top of each other, and to clean it up later in another software package if you need only 1. I used to do this when trying to start from a plane, but you can also just work with a cube and stay in orthographic side view…

Also, it’s been a little while but I believe if you import a single plane it will temporarily fill the “holes” in Wings. Holes are missing faces it needs to complete to perform calculations on the object. If you then export the object (at least, as an OBJ) these filled-in holes should still be absent in your model.

Hope this helped.

Well you can also use hole material on your models for areas that you wan tto have 1 face. Hey can’t have everything. Wing sis primarily a box modeler so keep that in mind.
