How to install scripts:
Ok, let’s take Meshtools as an example. The readme file that comes with Meshtools states the following:
- run “Meshtools_2_x_removal.ms”. This will (should) delete all previous
version Meshtools macroscripts from 3dsmax4/ui/macroscripts directory. (I
compiled now all scripts into 2 files, so they are easier to manage.)- copy “Meshtools-Functions.ms” to 3dsmax4/stdplugs/stdscripts (where
3dsmax4 is your max4 directory), overwriting the previous file- copy “Meshtools-Macroscripts.mcr” to 3dsmax4/ui/macroscripts
- copy the new icon files (all .bmp s) to ui/icons and ui/discreet.
- pray
- Start max.
- go to Customize/CustomizeUI
- Everything should be under Category:Meshtools, as before.
Ok, so those instructions are pretty straight forward. Once you have done these steps, do the following to use the new tools:
In your main menu bar, click “Customize” --> “Customize User Interface” ::See Below::

Click the Toolbars tab. Now you can use the Category dropdown to filter all the tools available to you ::See Below::

Select the category of tools you are looking to implement, in this case MeshTools ::See Below::

Now in the upper right hand corner of the the panel, you will see the toolbar controls. Click New, and in the box that pops up, type in a unique name for your toolbar.

Finally, simply drag and drop the tools from the UI panel into your new toolbar. You can then move them around within the toolbar, and also dock the toolbar to the top, bottom, or sides of your workspace.

I hope this has helped a bit. The same general procedure can be used to customize your Quads, menus, and keyboard. The quad menus are a bit more tricky, but this should get you started.
Glad everyone is enjoying the vid. Have a great day, and let me know if you have any questions!

Is there going to be a second part to the video? Such as finishing the head or showing the creation of the rest of the body?
Press PAUSE botton and then use arrows keys. Worked for me.
Thanx again Dave :applause:, now let’s see the sequel
Dave Black:
Hey man, thanks for taking the time to do that. I really appreciate it. This is why I love online forums/online communities…We inspire and motivate each other and we’ve got each other’s backs covered. That is the best way…to learn from each other.
All you guys rock.
Keep up the great work!

d7man200:
Yes, there will be another part. I’m off on an artistic detour right now, so when the next one comes out, it will be leaps and bouds above the first one.
pitaman:
Dude, that’s so encouraging. I agree. We’ve got a great community, and it’s been awsome to be able to share and enjoy each other’s talents and enthusiasm.
Thanks for the kinds words!

cool,
can you tell me how you made this video,
the size is good and quality good too.
I’m having a hard time making a video tutorial because size is too big.
I made it using Camtasia Studio.
I captured it at full screen: 1280X1024.
I used the “Time Lapse” function set to 15FPS with playback at 15FPS.
I then took the video into Adobe Premiere(All I had on hand at the time). I cut the size down to 50%, and the increased the speed by 2X.
I then compressed the video using the codec Quicktime Sorenson Video 3 with a frame rate of 15FPS, and at 640X512 res.
Quality was set at 75%.
That’s it. It took me alot of trial and error to get to that size, but I had to do so in order to distribute. I wanted to release it at full speed, but it was too long and far too large to release over the 'net.
Best of luck in your endeavors!
-Dave
I tried Hypercam which is free to use (Camtasia costs $300 I checked) and I get something like 24 MB for 10 minutes, I recorded at 1024x768 and encoded with XVID at 800x600.
the quality of the video could be better,
also, I can’t record with Hypercam with 32 bit setting for some reason, I had to change it to 16 bits.
I wondered about Camtasia Studio…in Computer Arts January issue there is Camtasia 3 and it says it is a full program, I don’t know what to think about it, whether it is the same product.
yes camtasia is good, all the versions are basicly oke…
so i would go for it. but the demo… doesnt have much limitations ,thats what i thought… just a watermark as far as i can remember.
im not using a legal version, so forgot it.

hey dave, this looks like the best tutorial iv ever seen on modeling a head, but it seems to end unfinshed becouse it says nothing about around the eye area it just ends halk finshed, do you have plans on finshing it, if not mind explaining how to do it?
Thanks Fudge
When he was modelling the head the recorder stopped and he didn’t realize it. So he actually went through and finished the head, but it wasn’t recorded. Don’t worry, he says that he plans on creating a tutorial creating a head as well as a the rest of the body some time in the future.
Will there be an update to ur head modelling tutorial? I wish u could show us how to model the rest of the body too:) it will be awfully useful…please
Here is my mirror for this outstanding tutorial: http://www.burns-cg-studio.com/DB_TL_Facial_Modeling_1.mov
Thankyou Dave for the Facial Modeling tutorial! I had a blast modeling the mouth and nose last night and I am looking forward to finishing the nose and doing the eyes tonight. Your tutorial is the best I’ve ever come across. I like the emphasis on modeling the circular openings first. The synth GI lighting is great too which allows for making very subtle changes - although I think the lights are too dark below. I added another spot to illuminate the nostrils better because it was dark beneath the nose. I think towards the end of the video the work flow is a little less polished and could be tweaked.
Here is what i’ve done so far but with my added light disabled:

ok, well iv finally got chance to try this tutorial, but i use maya and im stuck, where near the begining you have the 10 verts circle, he chamfers the edges when i do this in maya i get a completly diffrent reasalt, what am i doing wrong?
