New simple shader...Color Coordinates

#1

Hey guys’n’gals,

here’s a tiny little color coordinates shader for you, which is truely for compositing more than anything else. It allows you to map coordinates on geometry ( XYZ -> RGB ). This you can use in compositing with filters that can take advantage of it, like the upcoming NoiZette for After Effects!

ColorCoordinates.mp

It’s still super simple, just fields for entering the bounding box values manually in form of (x min/max, y min/max and z min/max). Later I will make an update with automatic size, but for now this one’s really handy already!

NoiZette_Ball quicktime
(check your popup-blocker, in case the quicktime doesn’t show)

It took about 1.5sec to render each frame of the source in messiah. It then took just about 1.2sec in After Effects to render it with NoiZette, ZbornToy and reelsmart:motionblur.

Just a quick little fun thing!

Thanks Taron.

Niceo! cool stuff

#4

Taron, thanks

Though, I have a complain to make.
The last 2 years, pmG seems idle, nothing is happening apart occasional minor things. Lyle left and nobody bothered to say a word. pmG website looks abandoned, the last release almost passed unnoticable, I dont want to mention about the rumors.

What the #$$%@% is going on ?
We invest in pmG, we have the right to know:

  • where are you going
  • where are we going
  • what is the roadmap, plans
  • where are demo videos, new features

If you are planning to slowly disappear from the 3d world, you need to inform us.
At least, we will be looking for alternative solutions ahead of your closing.

I doubt that you will reply in detail

#5

Just move on. You know you want too.

#6

Nichod, if I need your opinion, I will ask you in person

#7

I’m with you on this one. Totally legit to make a polite request for some info from whoever is still involved at pmG. However, given their track record they will likely ignore the request.

#8

OK!. . . lets. . . please not go there. Please Panikos, Nichod, <zip it>.

Taron that is one freaky plugin you have going on there. I’m going to try playing with it to see if I can get some fast open ocean water effects without having to “render” them in Messiah. Your really blurring the line between production and “post”. They will re-name it “during” soon.

#9

it is a open forum… if you make a post, you will recive opinions from anybody, like it or not.
if you don´t like messiah, it is a open world too… chose another ap.

#10

Gerardo, If I didnt like messiah I wouldnt bother at all, nor I would visit this place.
As a loyal user that desires progress, I have the right to know the reason of this inactivity.
I havent post my request to argue with other users and I dont accept directions from anyone not responsible to answer my questions, either u like it or not.

This is my last post for this topic.

Sad to see you becoming so sensitive Panikos:sad:…Dont loose your time and energy really. I dont expect anything from pmg for some time now…Who/what is pmg anyway?..In the end time lost is lost there’s no way back. At the moment I am building my first guitar and I love to work with wood:).

Absolutely legid, except the “we invest” part. What did you spend? $300 or $1000?

Anyway, we need users, but we really need buyers.

Here’s our roadmap:

Survive!

If ALL of you great investors would spend $100 on us at once, we’d be back on track and could focus 100% on the things we’re after and those are split in two kinds of ways:

  1. Things we’d do ourselves (as always):
  • get our major feature-wishes in: Hair/Fur, Particles completed, Output buffers and handling perfected, Endall bones solution (crazy stuff), Editing optimized/finished, Customizable interface, Shading perfected/more modes, Rendering features, Realtime render approach, Timeline editing of images/seq…
  1. Things we’d want a hired gun for:
  • documentation, internet PR/Website, first support layer, organizer (shows/conventions), all the wonderful stuff we always had to struggle with, essentially, but that would be necessary to not be in a situation as we’ve been for 5 years at least.

Anyone actually in the mood to invest? Upgrade to professional! If enough people would upgrade to professional, it would be yet another way for us to focus again on what we really love. And it is messiah that we really love. It’s been a tough time and no need to lie, it’s still tough. But we havn’t given up, and that’s also because of you guys!

I must say, however, most of you have not even tried to fully use messiah and you havn’t even really discovered how far the powers of it go! I mean, just realize that everything I had done in the last 3 years at least has all been with messiah from animation to rendering. Most of you seemed to have just waited for someone to complain and then take this as a great explanation for your own lack of energy to explore! I mean, I understand, but then there is ME and I’m not lying and my work’s not lying and if you have any appreciation for the things I do, you’d be strapping your boots up and dash into messiah rendering with passion!

Anyway, nowadays I’m totally screwed up/spoiled, because of my own funny little excursion into writing a little renderer/shader. This thing is not just magically fast thanx to it’s limitations, it also is not limiting enough to stop me from using it myself. Now I can’t hang with anything that renders longer than 0.5 sec before I can continue to tweak or longer than 10sec to render final quality. I’m currently using messiah to render layers for me, which I then use in After Effects to render with the ZbT.

You better believe that I want this thing to be in messiah, too!

Anyway, we’re all still there and we’re suffering very much for having to risk reactions like yours before we can proceed. Of course, you were exaggerating with the 2 years, because it’s barely 6 months that things are slow again. The silence about Lyle’s disappearance was horrible and I have no idea how we could have been so weak not to disclose this more promptly. Particularely while we had these powerful experiences right after that, while we made those instant leaps out of old problems and made advances that finally made it all roll forward again. We were afraid, that people wouldn’t understand and get scared and jump off, I guess, as well as promissing investment situations, which might have been sensitive to this kind of severe appearing change. I honestly hate to excuse that, because it wasn’t me. I’m the idiot who says everything out loud, because I hate conspiracies, secretive nonsense and all that bullcrap. I live to give you what ever I come up with and hope to get something in return, that’s all. Along the way I need to be with you, need you to trust me and what easier way should there be than being honest and open (maybe being rich and in a house?). Idealism can be misjudged, true, but I havn’t tried to sell you what you can’t get from me. Sure, you’ve given me nothing but wonderful words and I appreciate it from the deepest part of my heart, which may not beat on words forever, but I still am here for you. I do personally forgive the weaknesses we have, because I know where they are coming from. A lot of them are actually nothing but the other side of the tremendous strength of our team. Despite the ever present ungratefulness of a lot of guys amongst you, who really like to be as loud as they can be, we’ve focused on the software, knowing what an important tool it can be for artists! That requires a lot of strength, too!

Mistakes happen and no matter how perfect it gets, mistakes will always come along somehow. We have the stuff in our heads and within our powers to give you marvelous tools to create what’s on your mind in ways that are non-destructive, intelligent, inspiring, fascinating, pleasant and fun. If this through you would only allow us to live for you, really. Our passion is still there!

You better copy that text to a save place, because once I had my coffee, I might just go ahead, clear it all again and write something like:

It’s alright, no worries, things are moving on! It’s perfectly valid to ask, though! I’m ashamed, because I focused on surviving myself and wrote the ZbornToy, which is the best 2.5d renderer for compositing in history. Nobody gets it, though, hehe, too innovative they say? So I’m still in limbo, but messiah is still moving, no worries! I’m just waiting for a sign that I can survive these horrible times and then I’ll be back full-force!

…hmmm…

…hmm, hmm, hmmm…

I’m so damn mad that I post this stuff, but hey, what the heck, be entertained! :bounce:

All you need to know: We’re here, we’re real and we’re still progamming messiah for you! We just suck bitterly when it comes to PR.

Taron, thank you.
As far as investing, if you’d set a price, I wont complain. I paid for my share.
As far as the frequency of news, you started with high frequency and you dropped it to nothing.

There was a rumor that messiah became a home project. You want to contradict the rumors, have someone for blah-blah. Silence causes suspition.

#14

That’s honest Taron. I appreciate it, though I feel you should probably erase it and my post (I can do that) for the sake of sales. This is NOT going to help.

I really really think you need to focus on ONE area - Character Animation. That is where the real strength of the company lies IMHO. The renderer is NOT being used widely for commercial work as far as I can see but YOU GUYS ROCK AT CHARACTER ANIMATION. I know that I’ll be whamed for saying it BUT I just don’t think the small PMG team can possibly hope to remain competitive coding a full Character Animation AND rendering suite - you need to concentrate 100% on CA. Get all the small things sorted out (inactive keys etc) and then advertise way way more - email’s free. I can’t remember the last time I recieved one from you and I’m a registered owner?! The industry has gone more and more multi app pipeline and this would play well to you IF you could get the CA side really sorted AND advancing. Your CA tools are still WAY WAY ahead of LW, some prefer them to maya. So, my opinion (possibly unpopular with the more hardcore messiah fans) get rid of the renderer and make the CA part sing.

If you took that direction, and I saw more awareness and the start of rapid progress, then I’d gladly invest 100, 200, 300, 400, hey even more bucks no problem at all. I really want to keep using messiah for my CA requirements.

Look over at the LW forum. Messiah being discussed again BUT the worries about a silent company are ever present. This thing needs life and it needs it now.

Tough decisions time.

Wowa. Taron. . . Man. When you write a reply. . . you REALLY REPLY!

I hope it goes over well. Its always hard to tell what is going to happen here.

I did feel the big surge in power with the tools and renderer as of late. Even with this 2.5b fix there seemed to be a massive change in the way memory is handled. I can displace way more than I used to be able too with the same amount of Ram and things have gotten a lot more stable.

The fact that you are using Messiah as the main platform for Zborntoy also shows me your willingness to sacrifice for and promote it. Logic would tell you to write plugins for Lightwave and Maya etc. But Messiah is the gateway to the true power. Awesome. Thank you.

I really hope people take advantage of your raw integrity and upgrade. Or at least USE IT. Explore. I’m pretty much always in IRC (#Messiah3D irc.freenode.net) and there isn’t a day that goes by that we don’t find some new aspect of Messiah’s renderer/rigging powers. Come join us if your feeling like a good messiah fix.

DMack I know Lightwave’s renderer really well. Its something I have used for years. But I don’t hesitate in any way to say that Messiah’s renderer as it is now often kicks Newteks ass. Over and over. Even with the changes in 9. The shadow quality for area lights in Lightwave alone drive me bonkers! A setting of 5 in Lightwave (The max) is a grainy crap fest. I have had to build up stacks of area lights to get the same quality I get out of Messiah with a quality setting of around 8 or 9.

The network rendering in Lightwave is always confusing and very unstable. Screamernet is a nightmare. You always have to go through and check every little frame for errors. Sometimes a plugin won’t load for a particular frame. . . or a texture will just go away for no understandable reason. Messiah just works. No fuss. Not even anything to really configure or worry about. In a production environment. . . that is a godsend.

Lightwave’s GI has always been slower. Probably always will be. Thats why there is Kray.

Its new nodal system in LW is a welcome change but we have had that in Messiah for . … well. . . ever! And because of that its just plain better. I know it.

In order to get Lightwave’s renderer up to Messiah’s level you pretty much have to substitute it with plugins from Worley and others. Not to say thats bad. I own them all. . . and have used them all. But to not explore Messiah’s renderer as it is now is a grave mistake IMO. Especially if your in a production environment.

You know, I’ve decided not to erase the post below for once, because why not use it as a milestone. I personally apologize for having been silent for such a long time. It’s tough with a team that is fully committed to programming and almost not at all to PR.

Wegg, one of these days I’ll grab Ya’ for a big hug! (…and that was just for the post before the LW bashing! )

DMack, I understand very much where you’re coming from, but I’m telling you this: The true power of dealing with animation is directly related with rendering it! We’ve inched our way into rendering, but our ideas are so strong and far beyond what’s there already. The things we would take away from you by not offering our full strengths to you would make it unforgivable to us! Only very little things are missing to get you to fully appreciate the rendering section in direct connection with the animation powers! And we are fully committed to make it happen! Our team is big and skilled enough to handle this technically. We just need to be allowed to focus on all of it. I know, this is really just an echo of what I’ve said earlier, but it’s the truth and it’s important to know. We can, but we need all of you to allow it to us! (I’m really loathing that part of today’s reality…money/investment…cold for the most part, yet, an undeniable “sacrifice” that shows real appreciation and recognition on occasion. Obviously buying a software can be such an occasion!)

Panikos, messiah is our occupation! But, yes, we all work from home. Not from 9am - 5pm, though, but from 9am - 5am while we’re on a roll. Not paid by an abstract entity, but by everyone, who realized what messiah is worth to them. And again, I really apologize for the silence. If it really happens and all of you, who understand the meaning of messiah to 3d and your creations, would decide to upgrade to professional in order to support us, we will have things to report every week if not every day, I’m very sure of this!

AND THANK YOU! What you’re saying means a lot to me and to us! I want us to show you the strength you can draw from, even while it is your strength we need now to get up there again! Ultimatively it will always be your strength to bring beauty, wonder, inspiration and joy to everyone else. We love to do everything we can to make this process feel just the same!

I just took a dip into C4d land mainly because of sketch and toon, and I really like there new release r10. But when it comes to rendering I really miss the nodes. Anyway a funny thing is how nice maxon is dealing with expressions: by nodes, a really nice approach IMHO.

I think this could be something for the future off messiahs already very powerfull and smart command part, you already got a superb nodal interface in the renderer. For me it would make building expression setups even easier if I had a graphical interface showing the connections. One last thing, for those who like writing instead you could just keep the old way side by side.

#19

Another nice thing with making the command interface nodal would be sometype of connection nodes that where added in both the expression node flow and the renderers. That would make it easier for the user to use values from the command part in the renderer and the other way around.

Thanks Taron and Wegg. I appreciate you guys not jumping on me!

I’ll be honest. The thought of upgrading to professional with a view to getting further development doesn’t appeal to me. I’m just not a faith kind of guy. Messiah has had some upgrades over the last year or so (is it like 2 or more actually since the last paid upgrade??) and we’ve not had to pay for them. So, I’d be more than happy to pay for the next small update. My preference would be, remove inactive keys (or have a disable option), add dynamic parenting in place (if this can be done with relative ease) and add few other quick win requests made over the last 6 or so months. I would be more than happy to pay over the odds for such an upgrade as a show of some ‘faith’. Do that, and I’ll pay $250.

Without wishing to sound harsh - lacking PR is just not an option in this field. Taron you are a highly regarded, highly recognised artist - You need ot do some serious PR stuff!

I really am saying all this with the very best intention, I do hope you take it that way. I want messiah to succeed.
