New PC spec

#1

Hi all,

I’m going to buy a new PC and would like some advice as to whether this spec is good or any other recommendations. I aim to use to computer for 3d modelling, sculpting, rendering etc.(Maya, Zbrush/Mudbox, Photoshop). I do not plan to use the machine for gaming (or at least don’t have higher expectations for gaming than 3d art).

AMD currently isnt a great choice for anything other than a budget machine, you’ll get better single and multicore performance from an i7. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking the 8 core cpu will be great, it is beaten by mid-range 4-core intel chips.

thanks, imashination! I also heard that from someone but you’ve confirmed it. I’ve had a look at a similar machine on the website i’m using and came up with this:

Case: Cooler Master Gaming Tower Enforcer
Power Supply : 82+ Bronze PSU 650 Watt
Processor: Intel Core i7 4820K 3.7GHz 4x
Processor cooler : Alpenfoehn Sella (Socket 2011)
Motherboard: ASRock X79 Extreme4
Memory: 32GB DDR3 PC1600 4x 8GB G.Skill
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX780 Ti 3072MB ( 2xDVI / HDMI / DP)
First Hard Drive: 240GB SSD SATA3 6Gb / S
Second Hard Disk: 1000GB SATA3
Interface cards: Firewire PCI card
First Drive: 24x DVD burner
Card Reader: Card Reader 24in1 3.5 -inch internal
Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy
Wi-Fi wireless card 54 /150 / 300mbps PCI incl antenna.
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 64 bit
Manufacturing: tronics24 PC manufacturing
Warranty packages: Package M

1.755,55 EUR

Do you think it’s unnecessary to go with that processor?

Looks good. If you need to save money then for me the first sacrifice would be the SSD before I went with a cheaper cpu.

#5

Sure you want to go x79 at this point? It’s been EOL for awhile.

#6

Im not sure it really matters. intels platforms are generally not very upgradable so you tend to stick with what you have until the end of its life. x99 is only a tiny speed bump, if I were looking at 4 core chips I would still pick it due to the cheaper chips, memory and motherboards.

If i were building a 4 core machine today I’d go for a i7-4790K on Z97. Roughly same money. better performance, and not obsolete.

No point in going for an X79 mobo & 4 core chip that is around £150 more expensive than a Z97 i7 and you probably wont see any performance difference. Unless that X79 4 core chip is just a stopgap for a 2011 Xeon chip?

Hi everyone,

So, after some deliberating, i think i’ll go for these parts:

CPU - Intel Core i7-4790K
CPU Cooler - Corsair H80i
Motherboard - Asus MAXIMUS VII HERO
Memory - Corsair 16GB
Storage - Samsung 256GB SSD + Seagate 1TB 7200RPM
Video Card - Asus GeForce GTX 980
Case - Cooler Master Storm Enforcer
Power Supply - Corsair 860W

Do you think it’s really necessary for me to go for the GTX 980 instead of the 970, though? Will it really improve me modelling, sculpting and rendering experience?

Thanks once again, everyone!
